Finally bagged one !

Thanks MajorTom, and I'll try out your suggestion with Spotify.

You'll never get fantastic sound in a car like the F-Type anyway because of the other cabin and road noise.

I was told the same by many on the Z4 forum when I mentioned spending £4000 GBP on a bespoke hi fi in a convertible. "Waste of money", "no point in a convertible", "too much road noise" were typical comments.

Wrong thinking totally. That's exactly WHY you need quality kit. I've travelled the autobahns at a constant 120mph with the roof down and can still listen to my tunes in high quality - because the amp and speakers can handle volume with little or no distortion. With the roof up things just get better. Stripping out the cockpit and doors and installing heaps of sound insulation bought it up another level too - roof up or down.

I've had the car a day and a bit and LOVE the supercharged V6 howl :D The hi fi will most definitely be off whenever I'm on it. But for long motorway stretches and poodling about in traffic I'm happy enough with the Meridian sound.

I'll let you know if I go down the sound insulation route. I need to spend more time before deciding.

Welcome to the forum, you have a lovely looking car!

I do like the BRG and as pointed out earlier, the colour comes to life with the sun on it. I used to have one with that colour but sold it last year but got another one this year in corris grey and also from Tim at Sport & Touring. He really knows his f types and he is quite a character. He can source pretty much any spec (within reason of course) and is someone I would go back to if I had a set of particulars I was after.

Enjoy the car!

Congratulations on your new car. As a musician, I relate to the need of having quality sound equipment. However, the F-type is the only car I've ever had that despite having a decent sound gear, I just can't put the volume up and risk missing the gurgles, pops and all the rest of its sublime soundtrack!

I did invest in a Chromecast a couple of weeks ago and use it connected to the on-board HDMI and my phone's own data hotspot (not an external WiFi) to mirror the phone's screen and watch some videos while parked having a bite. It's a nice way of appreciating the stock sound system.

Interesting points about a strong sound system in a noisy car. Makes sense I guess!

The main issue I've experienced with the sound systems in the modern Jaguars I've owned and loaners I've driven is that the trim and interior is not quite adapted to the speakers and things start buzzing and rattling if you have too much bass or go too loud. In both my previous Jags I had to pull off the door cards to add felt tape to a number of places to get rid of that. If you send too much sound to the subwoofers behind the seats the same thing happens in the F-Type but it feels like I found a good sound setup without using the sub woofers too much.

And that's an interesting setup with the Chromecast. I have a couple of those but never thought of putting one in the car. I've wondered what on earth you'd connect to the HDMI port but I guess that's one use. I suppose it cuts the video signal as soon as the car is on the move though, just like if you play videos from a USB device.

Thanks Rob64 and WShudds. Sadly it was a work from home day today, but i commute to the office tomorrow - Woop ! (never thought I'd hear myself say that).

Like MajorTom, I too was puzzled when Tim at S&T mentioned the HDMI port. The image that instantly came to mind was someone in the passenger seat holding up a 50" OLED so I could watch Top Gear on the go 😂

I guess that means it's not possible to share phone content (say YouTube music videos) to the infotainment directly via the in-car Wi-Fi ? I'll try casting from my phone tomorrow and see if it "finds" the infotainment screen.

Any other uses for the HDMI ?

You can just stream audio via Bluetooth, nothing more advanced like casting straight to the system as far as I know. Oddly enough if you Bluetooth stream spotify, most of the time there's no album art shown, but when you connect your phone to the USB port and play from spotify that way album art always work. Overall the best way to stream from spotify without CarPlay/Android Auto is to use the built in spotify app. It's just a bit of a faff setting up because you need to access your account through a browser and enable it plus enter your spotify credentials somewhere there before you can access it in the car.

I've never used the in car wifi feature but I'm quite sure it's just like a local wifi hotspot allowing devices to connect to the internet through your in car SIM.

I've never seen or heard about anyone using the HDMI port but I guess it's simply like an HDMI in port on your TV allowing you to connect something to feed audio and video - whatever that would be in a car. I guess you could plug in a gaming console if you could power it somehow in the car. :) Anyways would be interesting to find out if HDMI video is cut when the car starts moving just like if you play a video file straight from a USB device.

Yeah it's a bit odd how rare BRG used to be and how popular it has become especially in the last few model years. Can't complain though because it's a brilliant colour. :)

The HDMI video output stops in movement but the audio carries on. I've seen reports online people saying they'd successfully hacked this feature in other cars. I managed to get into engineering mode to see if there was any option but there's none.

I haven't used the SIM card slot since I can use my phone's data. I recommend using a TV or another monitor to set it up before fitting it to the F-type HDMI.

This video explains how you can use your phone as hotspot for a Chromecast

Sounds like video from USB devices then. Video stops on motion but audio carries on.

Btw another advantage of having a SIM in the car is that you then get live satellite imagery on the satnav screen. You need to have the basic incontrol subscription which gives you the remote features etc but you don't need the overpriced HERE maps update subscription. Very handy when out and about in unknown territory and so much more useful than just plain map graphics.

I find it odd that I can't share my phone's data with the head unit which is something I can do with my 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe for traffic information, etc.

Back to the Chromecast, I mostly use it to cast YouTube, Netflix or to mirror my phone's screen. It works really well. If only we were able to hack the HDMI in motion restriction, then Google Maps or similar could be displayed while driving.

That sounds like SDD on a MY18? Were you using the seed generator tool to access engineering mode? If it was SDD, which version v16x.x?

I'm concerned about my own safety now but you're such a nice guy offering your own garage to people here so I feel compelled to share my know-how. Mind you, it's an incredibly complex process to explain and the tool used is rather intricate but I'll give it a try.

1) Switch ignition on
2) Press the home button
3) Ensure the neighbours are NOT watching you
4) Lower the window by 1 inch to get some fresh air in (this part is crucial).
5) Using your solid state index finger, press the screen on the left side of the clock and hold for 10 seconds. Voilà!

P.S remember to shut the window when you're done being a hacker!

Just having a browse around and spotted this thread, I too had the 'missed out and bagged a beaut' situation, and coincidentally with your car.

I was many months in awaiting the right car with the right spec and this one came up at SAT and i was tempted to get it as a fix until what I wanted came up.

I called, just as I believe you had done the deal, so missed it, but now have the 400sport i was always after. That green is special for sure. Great car.
