F Type exhaust sound change ???

Hi guys new here, bought an F type almost 3 months ago, it’s not the F type S so has NO active exhaust button and drives great but about a week ago the exhaust sound changed ? It’s now got a bit of a deeper grumble instead of the more high pitched tune ? Everyone once in a while when driving now it will go to normal for a few seconds but then go back to this new deeper exhaust sound and I am wondering if anyone knows what this may possibly be ? Thanks !

The button on the early cars just enables to the active exhaust baffles to be opened or closed, irrespective of the normal programmed exhaust operation.

In normal mode the active exhaust will open around 3500 revs. When switched to dynamic mode the exhaust will be open all of the time (pre 2018 cars). Does your exhaust sound change at idle when you toggle between normal and dynamic?

Also the car will learn the driving style of your current journey. It will pop and bang more if that's how you are driving or be more sedate if going with the flow.

It could be sticky valves in the exhaust - if you can get under the car give the rods a poke to see if they move freely. On the V6 the valves are located behind the back box, the V8 has them after so are easier to get to - you don't say which model you have.

And welcome to the club! ;)

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! It’s the V6 340 bhp and the sound is the same when it’s idle, it seems to have make the car sound louder and more of a deeper grumble! Will check the valves like you’ve said and see if that changes anything :)

Just to clarify, does the sound change between dynamic mode on and off? On should open the valves and be noticeably different.

Hi SCM, so when dynamic mode is on revs are higher etc but the deep grumble is still there just even louder…

Not sure why the revs are higher - I meant at tickover. If you have the engine ticking over, there should be a noticeable difference in the loudness between dynamic on and off. If you hear it, the valves would seem to be working correctly. Once we can establish that, we can try to analyse what's actually going on.

Sorry got confused, yes when ticking over in dynamic sounds different to sport mode you do hear the change instantly, same with this new grumble sound although the engine on ticking over is now a deep grumble it still changes with dynamic on and off… it’s almost like a deep grumble/muffled noise… crackles and pops on the car are now a bit louder as well
