Double and Single locking on the F-Type

When I lock my car I have always pressed the Smart Key once and thought that was sufficient (I also have other security on the car) but after reading up on the Jaguar website I have now found that to lock it more securely I should press the Smart Key twice within 3 seconds (double locking). I will be using this method from now on.

This is what the website says.......

Double locking:

On the Smart Key, press the lock button twice within 3 seconds to double lock the vehicle. The hazard warning lamps will flash twice (with a long second flash) and the handle of both doors will retract to the flush position. An audible warning will sound as confirmation. The audible warning can be enabled/disabled via the Vehicle Settings menu.

Double locking secures the vehicle and prevents the doors and luggage compartment from being unlocked or opened from inside or outside of the vehicle, except with the correct Smart Key.

Never double lock the vehicle with people, children, or pets inside. In the event of an emergency they would be unable to escape, and the emergency services would be unable to release them quickly.

The Full Alarm System is activated when the vehicle is double locked. Once activated, the alarm system will sound if:

The bonnet, luggage compartment or tailgate, or any door is opened.

Movement is detected within the vehicle's interior.

The vehicle is raised or tilted.

The engine START/STOP button is pressed without a valid Smart Key present.

If the vehicle is fitted with a battery-backed sounder, this will sound if:

The vehicle's battery is disconnected.

An attempt is made to disconnect the battery-backed sounder.

Single locking:

On the Smart Key, press the lock button once to single lock the vehicle. The hazard warning lamps will flash once (as confirmation) and the handle of both doors will retract to the flush position.

Single locking secures the vehicle and prevents the doors, fuel filler flap and the luggage compartment being opened from outside of the vehicle. The doors can be unlocked and opened from inside the vehicle.

The Perimetric Alarm System is activated when the vehicle is single locked.

Once activated, the alarm system will sound if:

The bonnet, tailgate or luggage compartment, or any door is opened.

The engine START/STOP button is pressed without a valid Smart Key present.

The battery-backed sounder will sound if an attempt is made to disconnect the vehicle's battery or the battery-backed sounder.

If I single lock I don't get a confirmatory beep, whereas I do when I double lock - that's the way to tell if it's worked! ;)

Ok thanks ;)

Also (as I've found out).......when double locking, the hazard warning lamps will flash twice (with a long second flash).

Have you also discovered that you can set the unlock to either unlock just the driver's door, or both? Vehicle Settings via the menu. ;)

Always double lock.

I wish the Jaguar Remote App showed whether the car was single or double locked.
For those moments like when its 7am and your nodding off on the train (after running late and abandoned car in train station car park and ran for the train) and do that weird jolt awake thing and have that horrible feeling of did I lock twice?

@scm: I noticed the unlocking feature when I was in the car the other day......it’s accessible from the vehicle settings menu.

Mine is set-up to unlock all of the doors and the tailgate on the first press of the key fob.

@simpleR: I'll be double locking from now on. The only time I'd single lock is (for example) if the car was on a ferry or being transported as the movement/tilt etc could trigger the alarm if double locked.

It would be handy if the Jaguar Remote App showed which way the car was locked.......better than thinking about it afterwards as you mention.

You can also double lock the car by pressing the handle twice.

1st press does the single lock. Whilst the mirrors are still retracting, press the handle again and it will double-lock

Ok thanks......that's good to know.

I have keyless entry so I use the Smart Key to lock/unlock the car.

Is there another way? ;)
My fob stays in my pocket and only leaves it to unlock the car if I've remote started it and I want to put stuff in the boot. I've found that if the engine's been remote started, if I open the boot while the car is still locked the engine stops!

I thought I had to use the Smart Key to unlock the car but if I can do this by simply pressing the door handle that's even easier?

If so, I'll join the lazy gang!

Well, I took the Smart Key out to the car and removed it from the faraday pouch. I tried unlocking the car by pressing the slight indentation on the door handle.......no joy at all. I then used the Smart Key (keyless entry) to unlock the car and after a short while I pushed the door handle back in by hand which took quite a bit of pressure (not sure if I should have done this but all seems ok). The car then locked itself.

I tried pressing on the door handle indentation again but it still wouldn't unlock the car, so for now, the only way I can unlock it is with the Smart Key. Doesn't really bother me as this is what I've always done but was curious after you mentioning not using it?

By indentation, do you mean the little button at the front of the handle? If so, you need to push it quite firmly, the handle might even go in a bit.

If it still doesn't work it could be the receiver in the door is faulty (I had that when I picked up my 1 year old car, which they obviously hadn't put through the 165 point inspection properly). To lock, push the rear of the handle in fully (twice quickly).

Before everyone starts forcing door handles in trying to lock cars!!!

Mine does work and keys never leave my pocket. MY18 400 sport.

I had a white P380 loan car for a few days last year. Either MY19 or 20 and that would NOT lock or unlock using the handle.

Perhaps options or changes in MY.

I'm not sure about later cars but on the invoice for my 2013 model keyless entry is listed as a paid for option at £450. I would have thought that if not spec'd you would have to use the key.

Certainly keyless is a paid option on current cars, £470.

Would have thought double licking would be the default position rather than having to press twice (key or door handle).
