Double and Single locking on the F-Type

Certainly keyless is a paid option on current cars, £470.

Would have thought double licking would be the default position rather than having to press twice (key or door handle).
.

We all love our cars Paul but I think you have to take a more responsible approach at present, so please do sanitise first :D

Sorry! - couldn't resist.

Had another go unlocking the car this morning by pressing the indentation (button) on the front of the door handle but there was no joy (I tried both driver and passenger side). The car definitely won’t unlock unless I use the Smart Key (Keyless entry).

Thought it may have been something to do with the faraday (signal blocking) pouch that I keep the Smart Key in but that can’t be the case as I remove the key from the pouch when locking/unlocking my car and the signal is received successfully (key was also removed from the pouch when I pressed on the door handle to try and unlock it).

I have a copy of the full 'Spec Check' on my car and ‘Jaguar Smart Key System with Keyless start and Keyless entry’ is in the list of optional equipment. The price paid is £450.

After inputting my vehicle details on the Jaguar website this morning I checked the information for unlocking the vehicle and Keyless entry and it explains the various options which are all available to me. These include using the key fob (Keyless entry), the metal key inside the key fob and pressing the door handle.

It shows the indentation (button) on the front of the door handle (see figure 8 on diagram) which can be pressed to unlock the vehicle. It also shows that to lock the car I can press the rear of the door handle (see figure 9 - single lock / figure 10 - double lock). This has reassured me that I didn’t do anything untoward when I pushed the door handle back in to lock the car yesterday (even though it took a bit of pressure to do so).

The following information applies to my vehicle and it is taken from the Jaguar website (see attached diagram).......

8. Keyless unlock: Press to unlock and/or disarm the vehicle. The door handle will deploy.

9. Keyless Single lock: Press the rear of the door handle to Single lock the vehicle. The door handle will retract to the flush position.

10. Keyless Double lock: Press again within 3 seconds of Single locking to Double lock the vehicle.

“Keyless entry allows the vehicle to be unlocked and disarmed by simply operating the door handle, provided the Smart key is within 1 metre.”

“The Smart key needs only to be on the driver’s person; it does not need to be exposed or handled. However, the Smart key may not be detected if it is placed within a metal container, or is shielded by a device with a back-lit LCD screen such as a smart phone, laptop (including when inside a laptop bag), game console, etc. Keep the Smart key clear of such devices when attempting Keyless entry or Keyless starting.”

I’ve also attached a couple photos of my car door handle (driver's side) when open and closed. This shows the indentation (button) at the front of the handle. I pressed this when trying to unlock the car.

As I mentioned yesterday, it doesn’t really bother me if I can’t unlock the car in this way as I've always used the key fob without any issues. I was just curious after what has been mentioned about unlocking/locking the car without using the key fob.

It could be down to what scm said........"If it still doesn't work it could be the receiver in the door is faulty (I had that when I picked up my 1 year old car)" ?

Is it possible to set the keyless option on or off (dealer action maybe)?
I know some people were looking into disarming the keyless option for security reasons, although I don’t recall the details of that thread now.

It doesn’t say anything about that on the Jaguar website I’ve been looking at.

What it does say is this.........

“If the Smart key is not recognised, or the engine still fails to start, consult a Dealer/Authorised Repairer.”

“If a Smart key is lost, a replacement can be obtained and reprogrammed to the vehicle by a Retailer/Authorised Repairer. Notify a Retailer/Authorised Repairer as soon as a Smart key is lost or stolen and have the remaining Smart key(s) reprogrammed.”

Neither of these apply to the issue so I’ll leave it for now unless anyone else has another explanation?

Thanks for all the replies ;)

On mine (2013) with key in pocket you can touch the door button and it unlocks and handle deploys. Press the rear of the handle and it single locks, press again and there is a slight klick and it double locks. Same on passenger door
No menu option to cancel keyless entry. That would be a dealer programmable option, unlike my Evoque which you can menu deselect it, which is great to avoid the theft using the key signal booting kit

Apparently dealers cannot disable keyless entry as 'it's part of the keyless start etc'. I'd be interested if anyone can actually do it, it would save having to keep the keys in faraday pouches.

Your handle indentation isn't a button - I'd guess you don't have the keyless entry option (using the fob isn't what I'd call "keyless").

Keyless entry can be disabled on a few JLR vehicles.
This method has worked on the XE for some people.
If your car definitely has keyless entry then it may have been turned off by a previous owner.
The vid shows how to re-enable it too.

This is why I described it as an indentation on my car door handle rather than a button.

Thanks to your replies, I can now see that my car cannot be unlocked using this method, which is probably a good thing as it doesn't compromise the vehicle's security? No wonder the handle took a bit of pressure to push back in!

As I mentioned earlier, it's not an issue as I always use the Smart Key fob without any problems (apart from if the key fob battery is low).

Cheers guys

Thanks for the video......didn’t know you can disable Keyless entry on some JLR vehicles with the key fob.

Don't think the video instructions would benefit my car as I have to use the Smart Key to unlock it.........unless anyone can advise differently?

This is probably a good thing as it doesn't compromise my vehicle's security?

Found this link on 'Disabling Keyless Entry' on our ftypeforum.......

Have you also discovered that you can set the unlock to either unlock just the driver's door, or both? Vehicle Settings via the menu. ;)

Depends on the model year. I have a MY18, and looked for ages in the settings, and found nothing.

However, looking on Jaguars site, for the MY18 (and maybe others) all you have to do is press both Lock & Unlock buttons on the fob for 3 seconds - the hazard light will flash confirming the change

I tried this process to deactivate mine without success.

As you can see from the link I posted, the full process was described by member daytona650 and it worked for him.

Not sure why yours hasn't?

PhilB mentioned earlier......."Keyless entry can be disabled on a few JLR vehicles."

All down to different options on vehicles by the looks of it.

I keep both sets of my F-Type keys in separate faraday bags, well away from the house doors and windows etc to help prevent theft by those using signal boosters etc (I do this even though my car door handle doesn't have the Keyless entry button). I’ve also got extra security on the car plus a floodlit driveway with sensors. As well as this, I have two other cars blocking my F-Type in, just to be on the safe side! Finally, I've taken out 3 year GAP Insurance and a fully comp policy.

Hope I’m not getting a bit paranoid?

I don’t think you’re ‘getting’ paranoid!

After seeing several owners trying to disable keyless entry I didn’t bother to pay for the option!

I do have InControl Secure though which I tested today! Disconnected the battery to wire in my battery charger lead and had a phone call within a couple of minutes from them asking me to check the car! I now know that I should put the car in maintenance mode first before disconnecting the battery! Oops 😬

Thanks

I don't blame you for not paying for the option of Keyless entry!

As I've now found it, my car cannot be opened via the Keyless entry door handle method as there’s no button. For security reasons, I’m not too disappointed with that one!

At least you now know about maintenance mode and that InControl Secure works!
