F-Type Convertible window drop when opening the drivers door

Hi,
I have had a V8 convertible for the last 4 years and love it, just joined the group to see if anybody can help with a problem that its developed.
When opening the door (drivers mainly) the window is supposed to drop slightly so that it does not catch on the trim. This has stopped happening (Still works occasionally). Also, not sure if this is related, but when I unlock the doors via the keyfob, the mirrors no longer automatically open either (Again works occasionally).
Had a new battery fitted, but still got the problem.

Anybody got any ideas??

Many Thanks in advance

Phil

Have you done the window reset procedure (I bet not!), Should be described in your manual but basically consists of holding the window switch down for a few seconds after it's reached it's limit, and holding the window switch up for a few seconds after it's fully up.

Can't help with the mirrors, sorry.

Also, is the battery fully charged? New batteries aren't usually supplied fully charged, and low voltage can give rise to all sorts of random failures on these cars.

Have you tried removing positive terminal off battery and leaving for a few seconds, this does a reset
(You'll then need to set up the one touch windows again)

Also, dont some new batteries need coding to car, basically telling the car its a new unit and what state of charge it needs to be at etc (car will work if this hasnt been done, but people report funny elec issues as a result)

Hi Phil,

I had the same problem with my car, and found one other instance on Google (the poster there never came back to say if they rectified it).

Mine went back to the Dealer where it stayed for 5 weeks. Their Master Technician couldn’t fix it, even with the help of Jaguar Technical. I know it had a new Body Control Module, and possibly a door module. I think they had got to the point of a damaged loom, but couldn’t work out where.
They insisted they’d get it fixed “eventually”, but after 5 weeks I lost patience and gave the car back.

I hope you have better luck, and find someone with better fault finding abilities.

Edit - the Dealer managed to partially rectify it, in as much as the window would drop until the car had been left to go to sleep when it failed again. I think the keyless entry had stopped working as well.

Thanks for your replies, yes the new battery had been configured to the car.

Update:
Car been back in the garage this morning and windows have been reset using the plug-in diagnostic machine.
Everything worked fine, until I got home and tried it again......
1) Window does not always drop when you unlock
2) Mirrors do not auto fold out

Disconnect the +ve from the battery, or 2 +ve's if you have two batteries.

  • Isolate.
  • Make cup of tea. (G 'n T if evening time)
  • Drink cup of tea. (G 'n T)
  • Reconnect +ve (s)
  • Run the window reset procedure
  • Report back

If you get stuck you could give Grange Jaguar Brentwood a call. (Send me a PM and I’ll give you my contact there).

My car was put back on Autotrader and has just sold, so I assume they found the problem eventually.

Thanks for your suggestions.

The car had everything reset and and also a new battery in the key fob (just in case...). Everything worked fine - windows dropped and mirrors opened on unlock. This worked fine for about a week with me checking it every day.
However, once I leave it for a few days and then go to open it, problem comes back again.

Something must be forgetting the settings???

Anyone got any new ideas????

Thanks

Phil

Phil,

How old is your battery? This sounds like KBS (Knackered Battery Syndrome).

F's are very temperamental if the terminal voltage is lower than eleventy billion Volts.

If you have a battery tender, whack that on for a few days, do a system reset, then stick it back on the tender and see if it mis-behaves again.

Hi Phil,

Mine was originally faulty all the time, but the Dealer eventually got it to the same state as yours - it would work Ok, but fail once it had gone to sleep. I really hope it’s a not battery problem - they had the car 5 weeks and I can’t believe that wouldn’t have been checked.

Speak to Matthew Overall at Grange Jaguar, Brentwood. He’ll know what they eventually did to fix it.

Hello to All.

The same issue as per original post has recently developed with passenger window on my 2014 soft top. A new battery was fitted last year and I have tried all the solutions suggested in the previous posts above.
My feeling is that there must be a sensor within the latching system that has failed......and needs to be replaced?? As may be obvious i am not a mechanical virtuoso, but I am wondering if anyone has been down this path and can offer some insight re best solution.
My car is serviced annually by an independent Jag specialist who did not seem to want to provide a solution when I discussed it with him (time to move on??). Do I need to see an Authorised Dealer?

Many thanks in advance..

Hi John,

Mine is back in the garage at the moment.
Currently the door has been stripped and the lock etc working fine.
The window does drop sometimes. They are currently still investigating some electronic unit in the door.

NB, we did notice once that the door was opened and it did not drop the window. Leaving the door opened, several secs / min later the window eventual dropped on its own - magic!!

Will let you know if they find out the problem.

PS, Mine is in an independent garage, and has had a new battery and all the settings for windows etc have been reset.

Please let me know if they fix yours first!!

Cheers

Phil

Good News!!!

Problem has been fixed, now the window drops and mirrors fold out when the door is opened.

Changed two parts
1) Electronic door lock
2) Door module

Not sure which one was causing the problem, but whilst the trim was off - decided to change both.
Parts costs approx £100 each plus VAT
Plus some labour from the garage

Happy days!!

Hi All

New F type owner with the same problem, when the car has been standing for a few days the widow doesn't drop when opening the door, if you wait for a while open the boot or the passenger door or start the car & drop the window manually it starts working normally every time, so I suspect its the door module is not waking up from sleep mode,

My question is to philhutton01 do you know if the new door module you had fitted needed to be programmed by the garage? as I would like to purchase a brand new module & fit it myself. Looking on here & other forum posts online some are saying they don't need programming & others are saying they do.

Any help would be much appreciated
