Usual Oil Consumption

Info I get from yank forum is . Turn ignition on then press and hold cruise cancel button for 5 seconds then press ignition off then press ignition back on . Sensor should be reset

I've had my 2014 V6 for 18 months now and no issues with any oil usage. Also had the XF Sport for about six years before that and again no issues with oil.

Oldest had an Audi and a BMW before that both drank a litre a month

To follow up on my original concern about oil consumption I called into Hatfields Shewsbury to advise that the oil level was half empty following the car's service in November after having driven only some 1096 miles.

At the reception, I was asked if they could help (good start) explained my concern, and asked if I should top the oil up and if so by how much.

Young Lady went away to talk with the Service Manager and came back some 15 minutes later to ask if the red light was on, I replied NO and was advised not to top up unless the level fell further and then only in very small incremental amounts.
I was informed that they had checked the service record and that they had put in 6.7 litres when the oil was changed, I asked if anyone would have checked that the level showed full - answer came there none.

The showroom and forecourt were stuffed with cars, no personnel or prospective customers in sight, somewhat different to my visit half an hour before to the Porsche Dealer nearer Wolverhampton...but there you Service JLR Style.
V6S Coupe - with all the bells and whistles

RWD is 7.25L and AWD is 6.5L so I guess it depends on how much they got out.
If they did put in 6.7L then presume you are RWD which might suggest why you are only at half way point?

Whow ! Thank you simple R.

One call to the Service Dept. of Hatfields Shrewsbury advising them of the correct amount of oil an RWD Car Diff takes as 7.25L and they admitted that the Car had NOT been filled correctly.
They then asked that I bring it back to be filled, but, of course, no offer of recompense for the inconvenience - so far.

The sceptic may wonder if short filling is another way of increasing profit.

Well, Just had a call from the Service Manager of Hatfields Shrewsbury to explain that despite confusion on the Topix Site the Mechanic did put in the correct amount but that the wrong information was given to me when I visited them.
The confusion would appear to be that when checking Topix for the correct amount of oil to be put in it does not clearly show whether or not it is 6.5 or 7.25L or that is what I understood him to be saying perhaps others who have access to Topix will confirm.
Nonetheless, he was most contrite and has offered to top it up whenever I am passing.

If they did put in 6.7 litres they got it wrong for both models! Not confidence inspiring ....

Mine (RWD) was serviced last week and I was billed for 7.0 L which I assume is about right. I’ve checked the level since and showing full so I guess 0.25 L wasn’t recovered? Was also billed for a new drain plug so they haven’t sucked it out.

My car was given its 60-month service by Hatfields of Shrewsbury in November 2021 when the mileage was recorded at 30321 miles.

Today with a mileage of 31417 miles the Cold Oil Level readout shows half full/empty ( for 1096 miles of use which does seem to be excessive, especially as the service interval on miles is 16,000.

I have checked this morning and the oil level is half full/empty whilst the car is parked on my level garage floor.

The correct amount of oil couldn't have been put into your MY2017 V6S RWD Coupe if your oil Level readout showed half way after doing only 1096 miles from having the 60 month service (unless you had an oil leak, which you would have noticed on your garage floor etc). Is the reading still the same or has the oil been topped up to the correct amount of 7.25 litres?

If there was any confusion with TOPIx (I doubt this), the engine oil capacity could have easily been checked in the ‘Technical Specifications – Capacities’ section shown here https://www.ownerinfo.jaguar.com/

I’ve attached the relevant information on oil capacity and checking/topping up the engine oil on your car.

Doesn’t say much for Hatfields Shrewsbury!

Thank You for all of that RPSN.

The level is, as before, half full, on the gauge.

Hatfields have offered to top it up when passing - as it is not critical at the moment I will wait not wanting to drive some 30 miles just to have it done.
I any way carry 1 litre spare in the boot which I bought when new as I did not know if she was going to use any whilst New when in Europe.

Yes I thoroughly agree does not say much for Hatfields as they also advised me that there was nothing wrong with the Diff, despite it making a noise akin to a cement mixer when turning hard left, but that is another story.

I purchased the Car from HA Fox in Chester and a few months after getting it dropped into their Brand New Multi-Million Pound Premises to ask a question - unbelievably every person who could have answered the question about an F Type was away on a training day.

When at Fenn End having a wonderful F Type Day my Jaguar Instructor advised/confirmed that they were hearing endless complaints about Service Centres.

It's a problem across many car dealerships generally. No great surprise, as many of the same people just move between brands on a regular basis. A dealer can be good for a while and then fall into the hands of numpties.

I went into Snows BMW in Brighton back in 2013 potentially interested in a new 5 series. Vast showroom full of cars inside and out. With no other customers inside, I wandered around for 10-15 minutes being completely ignored by many people sat at desks. Whilst on my way out through the main doors, a salesman on his way in ackonwledged me............a 5 series, erm no I don't think we, erm ,have one at the moment......I think we have a used one but, erm, someone has probably popped out in it......! You couldn't make it up! BMW only had five models at that time (the 1, 3, 5, 6 and 7). It's like being in my local chippy asking for cod and chips............erm.....cod.......did have one here........but it looks like it's gone already! Luckily I didn't decide on anything for 2 years and ended up with an F type in 2015 :D

Rather than wait until you pass the dealership which is approx 30 miles away, and due to your oil level gauge only showing half way between Min & Max, it would be better to top-up the engine oil using the spare oil you have, providing it’s SAE 0W-20 meeting Jaguar Land Rover specification STJLR.03.5006 or STJLR.51.5122. Follow the top-up procedure in the screenshot I provided earlier. Alternatively, if the level gauge is not advising a top-up quantity, add 250ml then run the engine until it reaches normal operating temp, switch off, wait 10 mins and check again (ensuring the car is on a level surface). Repeat until the gauge shows Full/Max.

The next time you pass Hatfields Shrewsbury, call in and ask them to provide you with the oil you used.....free of charge! You can keep it as backup in case needed.

The type of issues you have experienced with Jaguar main dealerships is one of the reasons that many owners use a good Jaguar independent specialist instead. If you wanted to find one in or around your area, enter your post code here...... https://the-jaguar-specialist-register.com/

Sadly, The Independents near me involve a drive of some 70 miles and then a sit all day whilst the car is serviced.
So, I am nearly forced to use Hatfields, nonetheless, I will use a very good local garage for brakes when needed.

The trouble is everything is electronic these days - when I had a DB5 many years ago my Company Fleet Service Manger could ask any of the mechanics to Service it but as the cars became more electronically controlled/complicated without adequate marque specific training they struggled

I think that should be the end of this little Saga - Thank you everyone for your input.

@01286p

At least you’ve got a very good local garage to use when needed.

Go on, treat your pride and joy to some of that new engine oil which you keep in the car boot.....it’ll save you driving the 30 odd miles to Hatfields Shrewsbury or waiting until the next time you’re passing.

Much better to see the oil level gauge full rather than half way!
