Small bit of paint corrosion?

Hi All,

First time poster but have been reading the forum since I bought my 2014 Ftype last October.

I believe I have a small bit of corrosion under the paint next to boot lid.
The rubber trim there wasn’t stuck down very well so wondering if water has been getting under paint from paint chip?

What’s the best way to deal with this to get it sorted? I have stuck down the loose rubber trim with some sealant.

Thanks

Yeah you could be right 🙈 I bought it in October 23 from a private seller but he bought it year before from Jag main dealer.
Obviously didn’t mention any known body damage.

I don't necessarily think it's accident damage. The Jaguar XK (aluminium body) suffers from several areas where corrosion can develop and these are usually on sharp corners of panels, typically where small areas of paint can get chipped of allowing corrosion to develop. The F Type will be no different.

A good body shop can sort that easily enough.

You might be right.
I was just basing it on what appears to be a paint run on the lower corner, and the rear light cluster not sitting flush in the recess.
Thee also appears some surface paint scratches on the rear, which abruptly end on the vertical edge of the panel corner.

As you say, a decent body shop will sort for peanuts. 👍

Thanks for the replies guys.
Hadn’t even noticed allignment issues etc haha.

Will see if I can find a decent body shop in Glasgow.

Looks decent from a distance at least but want to get it sorted😊

Going in for a major service next month as well including the belts and gearbox oil.

Hi and welcome.

It doesn’t look like it’s caused by accident damage to me either. If as you say there was a paint chip there, water has more than likely crept underneath and the corrosion process started.

As it’s in such a small area which is on the corner of the quarter panel I would try touching it up. Before doing so, you’d need to carefully remove the corrosion including any that is under the rubber trim you stuck down.

Another option is a ‘SMART’ repair. Worth contacting ‘ChipsAway’ in Glasgow https://www.chipsawayguys.co.uk/ to see if they can repair it to your satisfaction?

If you take it to a body shop you may find the whole quarter panel needs to be resprayed plus the surrounding panels blown in (not cheap).

Nice looking car.
I agree with @RPSN about considering the Chip Saway Chaps.

I had something similar a few years back on my aluminium XKR lower body panel. I believe a stone chip had pierced the paint and oxidation had started over time. I simply scraped away the blistering till I got shiny aluminium and then primed & repainted; you’ll need to use an aluminium primer, though. 👍
The local body shop guy didn’t want to touch it (it was in the middle of the large lower door panel) and cautioned on the difficulties of blending in reds, due to fading etc..

Thanks for the advice guys! Will contact chips away as had work done on a previous car by them a few years ago.

Failing that will attempt a touch up myself as gotva chipex paint kit but would need the primer. I know I would do a crap job though haha as just not good at that type of stuff.

Hi guys, did this get resolved and has anybody else had this issue. I have identical corrosion on my 2018 car. I'm assuming there will be a 10 anti corrosion warranty on these cars?
Mine has full JLR service history so it's complied with all stipulations.

Regards
Jon

Hi,

I got it fixed but the place that fixed it said there was no corrosion and were unsure what caused it but I suspect that area had seen a bit of paint before I bought it.

Thanks for that, I'll keep an eye on it, like most things you don't notice when you're wearing the rose tinted glasses at purchase 😂😂
