Love the clean look....shame it’s illegal though!

As an owner of an Ariel Atom, where there is no “good” place for a legal number plate, I have been through this many times! Most MOT stations are clueless and will pass a stick on number plate, but alas, if plod decides to go after you, they always win!

I regularly do a charity “supercar for kids” track day event where “friendly” petrolhead police come along. Speaking with them they admit they normally turn a blind eye as they don’t see the harm, but get the wrong one on a bad day and you face a fine and 7 days to get it rectified!

You pays your money and take the risk!

Thats interesting as I took the stick on number plate to my MOT tester and asked his advice on it's legality.

He said the cross beam (holder removed) is not big enough to support the full size lettering without bending it so the law says it has to be placed in the most vertical position on the front of the car and so the front of the bonnet is OK. I'm sure legally the police could fine me under the letter of the law but it is still pretty prominent and I'm not changing the size, font or reflective qualities, they'd have to have had a really bad day or for me to be doing something really stupid. Been on for a year now with no issues.

Yes, I think if you keep the spacing, font and spacing legal, 99% will turn a blind eye. One of my friends with a TVR Cerbra did that, but got fined as the a Policeman just seemed to have it in for him....he had, had the same stick on number plate for almost 10 years with no issue, but maybe his straight through exhaust didn’t help!!!

Went down the local JLR dealer today to get a quote on them (using P7 VIN in the other thread) - they're asking for £327.99 + VAT for the surround, and £268.79 + VAT for the grill. Seems very expensive - that's £716.14 all in!

Could have sworn reading on here somewhere that someone paid £360ish for OEM grill and surround (even cheaper than a Paramount one) from a main dealer? Or am I dreaming..

I have been through this it was an absolute torture! Regardless of what anyone says the front parking sensors never work properly. I had custom made mounts and the front end of the car was on and off in excess of twenty times and it was impossible to find any position that did not cause issues. At best a series of false positives when driving up a very slight slope. So unless you totally disconnect the front sensors and that is not an easy job don't bother.
Ask yourself this, why does the P7 have rear sensors but not fronts and you have your answer.

Forget the Paramount grill the quality is poor, if you must do it and I agree it looks great do it properly and buy the Jaguar parts.

I've had a couple of Soarer imports. The front plate on both I had made with motorcycle size lettering, 64mm I think, standard font and spacing. This was actually legal on the imports at the time, maybe still is, but I doubt many cops would have known that. Never stopped by the cops in those cars over 10 years.
If I could be arsed I might try the same on the Jag. I even have the old plates.

The price is correct for the OEM Project 7 Grill/Surround.

Regarding sensor pockets, I did not want them fitting to my grill. It’s a lottery whether they work or not & rather have the clean look. On my car the two middle sensors have been secured behind the grill out of vision. I effectively only have the rear camera to assist parking now. This is fine for me as car only driven to meets & pleasure drives. Always reverse into parking spots, if necessary & I’ve been driving long enough to trust my distances If you insist on fitting them there is a template on the US forum.

A good body shop could easily turn a ‘bumper bar’ grill into a one piece surround. You would then need the inner grill, again easily obtained plastic grill mesh. I’d seriously consider this option if I did this again.

Regarding the plate...



This is a correct reflective one with legal lettering & spacing. Been through two MOT’s at Jaguar main dealer with no issues. I’m sure police more interested in the dodgy spaced ones, smoked, made smaller etc.

A good body shop could easily turn a ‘bumper bar’ grill into a one piece surround. You would then need the inner grill, again easily obtained plastic grill mesh. I’d seriously consider this option if I did this again.

So you're saying you'd consider buying just the OEM P7 grille from JLR, and then filling the bumper bar holes in the original surround? Or not even buying the OEM P7 grille, and just buying some random black plastic grilling? Cheers!

No. Forget using OEM P7....

Purchase used ‘normal’ surround/grill with bumper bar. Discard bumper bar & two-piece grill. Give it to good bodyshop ask them to fill & paint it to your colour of choice. It’ll need to be filled to hide the cutouts where bumper bar used to sit.

Purchase black plastic honeycomb mesh off eBay. There’s load of it for sale. This will need to be cut to size & bonded into surround.

Personally I’d drop the two middle parking sensors. They won’t work properly in the holders. Best leave it nice & clean.

Fit nice new Jaguar ‘Growler’ badge & jobs a good ‘un.

I also had front nose resprayed whilst it was off to make it mint & bottom splitter & side winglets painted gloss black. It’s an opportunity to get any bits like this done as part of job.

One final thing to consider. Tow hook hole is annoyingly right on edge of surround if you tried to fit tow hook eye. You could take this into account when having surround prepared. I will have this amended whenever car goes back to bodyshop. You could hole-saw it in an emergency. The US guys have tried all sorts to no avail.

I paid £625 for the grille and surround, the dealer gave me a 10% discount.

I purchased the sensor pockets from https://www.oddsandendslab.com/parking-sensors

I haven't installed it yet, but plan on trying to keep sensors when I do, if at all possible

I ant to install SVR diffuser first, but probably do that over the winter.

Absolutely forget the front sensors, they wont work, pockets or no pockets!
As already mentioned why does the P7 not have front sensors but has rears??
