Rear differential bearings 2015 v6s

hi all.

I had a small leak on the rear differential seal, which i had sorted. ever since then I've had a loud whinning/rubbing noise coming from the rear end, it only happens when I'm off the power and usually between 10/30 mph.

The garage that I had the work done is a jaguar/land rover specialist and he looked at it and said it was the differential bearings. But he said he couldn't find a bearings kit to replace them, hes done it for land rovers a lot, but never a jaguar, all he could find was a refurbished full differential at a huge price.

So my questions are, is it possible to just get the bearings and if so, where from?

the car is a 2015 V6s, mechanical limited slip diff (I believe, I'm not very good with the technical!) I'm from west Yorkshire too, near Leeds.

did he measure the bearing, would think it must be a standard bearing just needs finding

that will be my next step if I cant find exact replacements. I'm going into my local jaguar dealership tomorrow, will see if they have technical information

All bearings have a number/code on them which can easily be referenced by SKF, FAG, NSK etc. There are various specialists who, er, specialise in rebuilding diffs and I’m sure some have been mentioned on here before, and it would probably be a quicker turnaround as they’d have the right tools to set everything up correctly, backlash, preload etc.

Yes, I had it done a couple of weeks ago by Alpine Transmissions in Glasgow. He has done several V6S' lsd's before. He mentioned that the same diff was in several Range Rovers. More convenient to you is probably M&T Transmissions in Sheffield. They've been recommended on here before and I did consider them but Glasgow was more convenient for me.

That's interesting, if it's the same diff as several range rovers do you think they would use the same size bearings? But I'm going to get in contact with m&t and another one closer to me

Hi all, I own a my16 S coupe, storm grey with brogue performance seats. I’ve had my differential replaced under warranty a few years ago due to a serious whine,7/21 43,00 miles. I replaced the differential oil after a rubbing noise when backing up something like clutch plates rubbing together,3/24 56,000 miles. Sent the oil to black stone for analysis. Results were original jlr oil had unusual properties from new differential. Replaced oil with redline 75/90 LS with oil additive and no more noise. I now use motul 300LS with oil additive in my differential. I bough this great f type in August 2019 with 30,000 miles after I sold my 1963 E type coupe BRG with tan interior. My ultimate E type that I owned for 21 years and drove her over 50,000 miles all over the east coast from Watkins Glen to Maine. I now have over 60,000 wonderful miles on my f type that I enjoy every time I drive her and I’m 80. IMHO I would change the differential oil first and maybe twice and see if that eliminates the noise before I ventured further.

Sounds like good advice, and inspirational to hear that you're still piling on the miles in the F-type at 80 Frank. Keep it up!

You need to entrust the diff to someone who knows how to replace seals, set preload, pinion depth, shim up the bearings, torque up crush washers and much more. Also typically stretch the pumpkin to replicate working loads. Ideally use someone who’s done several before, as those recommended if you want it to run silently and last.
I know as I’ve rebuilt several on Jeeps.

Sound advice. I will happily replace a lot of parts on a car but differentials and the like are way beyond my skillset and I'd rather trust someone with a good track record of rebuilding these items.

*update* I found a local company that fixes/refurbishes differentials and gearboxes. After taking the rear diff apart they found that the bearings looked really good, but we decided to change them anyway. I got the car back yesterday and its worked, no more noise and it feels great to drive again.

I would highly recommend Maltings Transmissions in Bradford.

yeah, they took the diff off the car.

the price was £1k. Which compared to a whole new diff was good value. It comes with a 12 month or 12k miles warranty

they said it would be 3 or 4 working days.

I dropped it off on the Wednesday and picked it up the next Tuesday. Luckily I was going on holiday for a long weekend so it was perfect timing for me.
