Cold Morning

It was a very cold morning this morning and I got "frozen out" of the car! Took about 10 mins and used de-icer (first time I've used that stuff) on the driver window before I can open the door.<div id="UMS_TOOLTIP" style=": ; cursor: pointer; : 2147483647; : transparent; top: -100000px; left: -100000px;"></div><div><br></div><div>The remote start using the app didn't work either. I could hear a click coming from the engine bay when I try to start the car using the app but that's about it. </div><div><br></div><div>Once I got it, the car started up okay though.</div><div><br></div><div>For those drive the F-Type in the winter, what's been your experience?</div>

Not an F-Type owner (yet) but there have been similar discussions over in the TT forum = http://www.ttforum.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=98&t=1196945&sid=ca0e3f9b9d98ee79657cb56a5388b325 <div><br></div><div>There are some suggested "fixes".</div><div><br></div><div>For me, I just pour a jugful of warm water on my TTS driver door to get the window to drop, and hope my work multi-story carpark keeps car warm enough for the evening commute home. <img src="http://www.ftypeforums.co.uk/images/converted_files/smileys/smiley24.gif" border="0" alt="Ermm" title="Ermm" /></div>

Well I had a similar experience today. Decided to use the car instead of my normal commuter tool, my motorbike as it was looking a bit icy (-4 this morning). <div><br></div><div>Can't remote start at home because I have no mobile signal. keyless entry wouldn't work but the fob did pop out the door handles, then then the problem of the windows sticking to the door seals- hefty tug and it opened (does silicone grease around the rubber help with this?). Trying to de-ice took some time and for the first time since buying new a year ago the centre air vent jammed half way up- hoping that will reset later today otherwise its a warranty issue I guess. Then I noticed the folded mirrors had not unfolded and wouldn't so had to drive to work with no mirrors. They did however work by the time I got there and hour later.</div><div><br></div><div>I wonder how owners cope in Norway (Arne?) or Canada?</div>

I can't be of much help regarding the F-type, as mine is in winter storage <img src="http://www.ftypeforums.co.uk/images/converted_files/smileys/smiley2.gif" border="0" align="middle" /> <br /><br />But in general I am always very carefull with drying the car after washing in the winter - specially the rubber seals and window edges. I also use silicon on the rubber seals and where the windows meets the door frame. It is usually sufficient to apply the silicon twice or three times a winter. There are several different silikon products with different applicators on the market. Easy to use and works well.

I have had the opposite problem with the driver door when really cold (minus temps).<div> </div><div>Door opens fine - but wont close! Just re-bounds like there is no seal there. Passenger door is fine. Cant lock the car or anything when this happens. I managed to drive off to Jaguar to get it looked at - and the door caught on a safety latch - but the handle kept popping in and out, and the door was clearly not properly shut. When I got to JLR - I couldn't then even re-open the driver door - and had to climb over into the passenger side to get out!</div><div> </div><div>By the time they looked at it around midday - it was working fine, and presumably thawed out!</div>

Thanks all!<div><br></div><div>The car was washed the night before which sounded like a contributing factor.</div><div><br></div><div>Pricy147, I had the same issue where the door (passenger side) didn't close properly. Fortunately it was on another cold morning.</div><div><br></div><div>Definitely time to look into either a cover or some of the rubber treatment stuff.</div><div id="UMS_TOOLTIP" style=": ; cursor: pointer; : 2147483647; : transparent; top: -100000px; left: -100000px;"></div>

Hi Pricy,<br /><br />My car has suffered the exact same problem but on the passenger side. Happens every time the temperature drops below zero. Have had Jaguar Assist out twice and taken to the dealer three times. The dealer plan to change the lock on my car this Saturday, although I'm not convinced its the lock that's at fault!<br /><br />Have you managed to get this problem fixed? If so, please share.<br /><br />Many Thanks,<br />Darren.

Meant to say that Jaguar Assist advised me to rub silicon based spray on to the rubber seals. I've done this twice in the past two weeks but it hasn't solved my non-shutting door issue on a cold morning!

Hi Terrier,<div> </div><div>I normally garage the car overnight - so not had it since - but I am certain the problem is still there. Doubt I will get the chance to get the dealer to look at it this year - unless temps drop significantly - interested if you get anywhere with yours!</div><div> </div><div>Its more of an issue for me if I take the car away on holiday - if it were to happen - it wont lock!</div>

Thanks Pricy, I will let you know if changing the locking mechanism makes any difference.<br /><br />BTW, we have a near identical spec car! Perhaps the issue is related to the Firesand paint!!!! ;-)

I am always reluctant to wash the car when the temperature is below freezing outside. There will usually be a "humility build up" inside the doors and locking mechanism, that will freeze up as soon as the car goes outdoors in the cold.<br /><br />The only way to prevent that is to keep the car indoors in warm and dry conditions till the humidity has dried off.<br /><br />Humidity inside washing halls is very high and will condens on all surfaces - also inside the doors and mechanismes where it's not possible to wipe off.

Hi, my wife has been suffering from this problem for a while. I have tried a car cover, silicon on the door seals etc, but the problem seems to lie with the 'actuator' for the door lock. The handles pops out, but when pulled...nothing, the door lock doesn't even try to unlatch.<div>We had a similar problem with a Boxster, but at least the door would unlatch, it was only the window that wouldn't drop due to the frost.<br><div>Finally got so fed up of being locked out I contacted Jaguar customer services, the dealer has since finally acknowledged that they have had a 'few' cars with the doors locks freezing up after initailly saying they had never heard of this before.</div><div>They should be changing the door locks on both sides as soon as they arrive in stock. Trouble is, we won't know if this has fixed the problem until we get a few more frosty mornings.</div><div>I would contact JCC to see what they can do.</div><div>My wifes car is an '63 plate convertible, is it happening to the Coupe as well ?</div><div>Cheers</div><div><br></div><div><br></div></div>

Has happened with me both sides - door opened but when closing then locking the handles would not close flush with bodywork - thought I had broke the drivers door at first as I had to yank the door handle to get the car door open and feared if I pulled to hard the handle would come off!!

so used a hairdryer on both sides and handles were subsequently fine and now shut flush again - have made a conscious decision not to drive / open car in frosty weather on basis that I have another car can drive and we don't in UK tend to have weeks of bad frost in winter - just a few days normally

food for thought

-40 Deg they say ..

I am experiencing similar problems. The door handles pop out but the windows do not drop and it has taken a lot of effort to open the door. A couple of times I haven't been able to close the door because of the position of the glass. I was beginning to wonder if it was just my car, or maybe a design fault.

Had trouble opening the door, closing the door, and the handle not retracting.

It does amuse me when they show the extreme temperatures new cars are tested in - welcome to reality and the commute :D
