I had a very interesting chat with a friend who works at my local Audi dealer and if other dealers are doing the same as them, I can see why salespeople aren't that bothered... he told me they no longer get great commission selling cars, they get a flat rate(I won't say how much but believe me it was shocking) for each one sold no matter if it's a bottom of the range at £16k or top of the range at £150k car.

Doesn't really give someone the drive to sell does it?

This is not new .... in '86 I joined the largest dealer in the country of a particular franchise ... £3k basic plus a car to use, everything I earned came from number of sales made. New and Used had slightly different value (£50-£100) as well as an accessory payment and finance value - this was before the days of 'Business Managers' so I would do my own Hp deals. It was regular that commission from accessories and HP outweighed the car sale itself.

In a little over 8 months I'd sold over 140 cars .... going into '87 I was going to be top of all leader boards .... I'd now established myself, had access to historical records for prospecting and had a busy diary with lots of prospects. The othef sales guys thought I was nuts but I was going to give this my best shot ....

The result was even better than expected ... 100 cars sold in 100 days, previous years earnings achieved in 6 months, sports coupe demo rather than ordinary hatchback .... and the best bit for me .... by working my system, from cold prospecting (dealer customers but not mine at the time), to brochure drops in service cars, follow up class and asking for recommendations, I had a great August through which I set a dealership sales record and would often have people waiting who had been given my details as a recommendation ...

Car sales is not difficult, but very few care enough to want to b good ....
