2013 V6 Convertible

A heated windscreen is a must, as it's not only useful during the winter months so you can drive past others who are busy scraping the theirs and shout "Windscreen w*****!", but also during the summer on those weird (most of them) humid days when it mists up because you dared to breathe whilst it was raining. I know air-con helps but I don't have mine on constantly

When you see a car you like, chuck a deposit down on it before someone else does as you can always get a refund on it

Before you rush off to view consider why it wasn't serviced for more than the first 3 years of it's life and what caused all the MOT issues of cracked tyres, deteriorated ball joint covers, pitted or worn front disks, rear brake pads worn, etc., all at low mileage points to what should be expected for normal use.

On the upside a good recent service history and had the belts changed, but no plug changes listed in nearly 10 years..

I checked it out yesterday and there’s no mention of any MOT issues apart from windscreen wipers not clearing the screen.

There’s also a huge wodge of paperwork confirming the on line history plus other facts like plugs were changed in 2020. Strange how they weren’t listed on the online forms but they were done…..I saw the receipt.

However, I didn’t drive it because I was disappointed that it didn’t have a heated front screen and “old type” nav. Is the 2013/14 nav as good as the 2015/2016 and can it be updated?

Just wondering now whether I was too hasty as everything else seemed to stack up and the price was ok……

Do you really need a heated front screen?

The nav got better over the years but I wouldn't care about that. Just chuck in an aftermarket CarPlay/Android Auto interface and you don't need the factory nav.

I cannot even recall if mine has a front screen heater and don’t even use the sat nav aside it being a general guide to roads ahead. Haven’t purchased a map upgrade in the 7 years of ownership and just use Google maps.
Not sure that either are deal breakers when hunting for a 10 year old car, but everyone has must have items, but they lead to compromises in other areas.

The spec apart from the heated screen was pretty good to be fair.

Polaris white, heated seats, extended leather pack in red, seat memory pack, meridian surround sound, black wheels, black pack, reverse camera and front parking sensors, ignis paddles and steering wheel memory column thing (when I pressed the start button the steering wheel moved down……not seen that before!) Comparatively low mileage at 38000 too.

I’ve been scrutinising Autotrader all day and I have found another one in black with a heated front screen but the interior doesn’t seem as nice although it does have the newer nav. Only problem is that it’s about 200 miles away down south and I’m certainly not going all the way down there without some sort of confirmation about the “full service history” they say it has.

The other problem when I looked at it yesterday was that it was raining so the weather gods hadn’t been listening to me when I told them that I needed it to be fine…….🤣🤣🤣

For the one down south, ask them for the vin so you can check the online service history so you can a bit more confident about going (though online doesn't always list everything they did in the service)

If you don't have it then the link is:

That's the Auto function to make getting in and out easier if you're of a stouter build (switch on the left side of the steering column, I think).

I have been looking at the white one on line again today and it does look very smart and I’m thinking now that I shouldn’t have dismissed it out of hand on Saturday morning. The black wheels and black pack contrast very nicely indeed with the white body and I think I’m going to have eat some humble pie with the sales guy and have another look.

On reflection the navigation doesn’t really matter as I can use my phone’s nav and I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve had to use the HFS in the past.

Just one thought though—is there anyway of checking if the car has had any recalls?

The check I did says not but I’ve checked previous ones that have not allegedly had recalls and it turned out they had.

Can anyone suggest how to find out? @simpleR @cj10jeeper

Have any F-Types had recalls? I can't remember seeing references to any.

+1. Can’t recall any and in any event why if there have been recalls? They have either been fixed or will be if you go to a dealership.
If you like the car get on and buy it, before someone else does..

It’s just that I’d heard that there had been an exhaust recall recently on some model year f types and I wondered how to find out if the one I’m thinking about has been affected…..

If you go to https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history and enter the registration it will tell you if there are any outstanding recalls

Not recalls, just software updates to make them quieter. They are usually carried out by the dealer during routine services, unless instructed otherwise!

I think you are referring to H239 which was a Jaguar Campaign (not a recall) to meet enhanced EU noise regulations from MY18.

Yes, that’s correct; was it only MY18 models upwards?

So, the ones I’m considering (both 2015) wouldn’t have been affected?

The campaign was by model year (not registered/registration plate year).

The max limit for drive by noise was reduced in 2016 to 72db for cars made after 2017 which would mainly be MY18 spec cars but there maybe some MY17's affected as well.

However, as mentioned, regardless of this and when buying any car, drive as many as you can before making a decision.

@ simpleR

OK, thanks for the confirmation.

I am trying hard to drive some more cars but there aren’t many in my area that I can afford!!

The one I really wanted was the grey one (no service history from 2018 to 2024) but I turned it down due to the aforementioned reason and the thought that the engine might have been damaged as a result of that. I’ve heard rumours that lack of oil changes (or at least proven ones) could cause sludge in the engine and even cause the timing chain to stretch but to be honest I was (and still am) gutted as that was the perfect spec and price for me anyway!

Random question……is there any way of telling whether this has happened?

Really don’t fancy taking a chance and buying it only for the whole thing to be a white elephant and cost me a fortune….

I’m really surprised you’d even be considering a car with a 6 year gap in service history given how key it featured in your requirements. They are not rumours about issues running on old engine oil but simple fact that oil ages over time, is less effective, leads to lack of lubrication, excessive wear, sludge, rust on components, etc. Total failure is not uncommon as a result. I posted an article about a car just 7k beyond service due with subsequent total failure at 40k miles. Filter will be clogged too so restricting flow. Don’t forget the servicing also means no brake fluid changed, no spark plugs, air filters, etc. etc.
No warranty you buy will be valid when you try to claim anyth8ng linked to service requirements missed.
Sure you can run all sorts of tests to see if an engine is good from compression tests, exhaust emissions, oil analysis, borescope and more, but you really need to part dismantle to get deep inside to inspect. Lots of time, effort and cost.
Honestly walk away despite it looking shiny and a good spec.
