winter tires style 5039 wheels

SOLDES

Hello,

Just wanted to have a opinion.
Since last year my dealer is trying to sell me 4 20" gloss back wheels style 5039 with winter tires.
This year I got them down to 4000€ (3370£).
I can find them cheaper on ebay (or similar) but never in Belgium so I guess shipping will be a killer.
I've never had winter tires but never pure summer tires on a car before.
Do you think it's worth it, or should I still try to get them down and what would you deem acceptable?
It's a daily driver.
Thanks,
Nick

Difficult question to give a clear answer on.

Definitely recommend winter tyres in temperatures of 7 degrees and less - I swapped mine on last weekend.

More confidence in tricky conditions, better grip, better stopping, better economy, than a pure summer tyre.

I was lucky to pick up my set for a bargain price.

If the car is your daily driver through winter I would certainly recommend them.

Personally it seems the dealer wants to get them out the way, so I would push hard for a much lower price.

If you look elsewhere you can likely find some cheaper - with your model maybe 19" or 18" options too, depending on your brake package.

Also check out the replacement cost and availability in different sizes before committing.

Hope this helps a little.

If you want to drive in snow at all I would definitely get a set of winter tyres. My experience is that you can manage low temperature on summer tyres by driving cautiously and with an awareness of the limitations of summer tyres in low temperatures but there is no way I would take my car out in even the lightest snow.

I'd suggest if you want to drive in snow you get an old banger with winter tyres. The issue isn't you, it's the risk of being attacked by idiots on summer tyres losing control while you're out there! ;)

As SCM says get a cheap car. You could get a runabout for £3370 with winter tyres. You don't want 20" wheels anyway for the winter. You want the largest profile on the rubber as possible 18" would be a lot better. Not as nice looking but you will get to where you want to be. The problem is not only the driving but stopping. The rubber on summer tyres at less than 7 degrees C basically goes hard. Main dealer is the last place to be shopping.
In winter, forget looks
Just had a look on Belgium ebay 19" alloys with winter tyres just over 2000 euros

Don't think shipping is too much, on UK ebay, winter wheels & tyres shipping costs from Germany is just around £107. Maybe you should search Holland, France, Germany.

All good tips guys thanks! I didn't run snow tires last winter and had no issues even in snow and yes it's the others I'm more worried about.
And yes the 4000 is too much. elitewheelsandtyres on ebay seems to have a good selection with about 180€ of shipping at half the price (refurbished) I'll make myself rediculous and offer them 2200€ :-D .

Also make sure a smaller wheel will clear your brakes - if you have the big disks not many 19" wheels will fit.
