Windscreen Wipers Service Position

Hi all,

Do anyone know how to set the wipers to the service position? I've tried to follow the user manual:

Before changing a wiper blade, the wiper arms must be set in the service position as follows:

  • Make sure the ignition is switched off.
  • Switch the ignition on, then off again.
  • Immediately pull the wash/wipe control toward the driver, as if to command a single wipe. Hold this position while switching the ignition on again. The wipers move to the service position.
  • When the new parts have been fitted, switch the ignition off. The wipers return to the park position.

But it did nothing apart from normal wiper operation.

Thanks

I haven't had to change my F-Type blades yet but if they're anything like my XKR it should be perfectly possible to change them when in the parked position. Unless you want them in the service position for another reason?

Just wanted to give the blades a good clean because they are leaving streaks,
Don,t want to damage the bonnet paintwork

Cant you just switch on ignition. Start the wipers, then when they are vertical on the screen switch off ignition. Wipers should stop at that position

I just followed the instructions exactly on my 2014 3.0 coupe and the blades set themselves into the middle of the screen. Unfortunately I could not do much more with them than when they were in normal resting position. When I turned off the ignition they returned to resting as stated.

Just in the process of changing my wipers, they will not pull away from the screen more than couple of inches because of tabs on the arms that stop them, this wouldn't change if the wipers were stopped mid screen anyway, then can be removed in the parked position though so no problem really.
My problem was the wipers are the aero type (no metal frame) took one off and visited Halfrauds, the only similar ones were Bosch Retrofit Flat blade at £19 each, declined and got a pair from CarParts4 Less for £19.20 delivered. Part No is AR21U if anyone interested.

Update took off originals and drivers side is 22” so ordered pair of AR22U make up 2 pairs
( keep one as spare set )
Bosch fitted fine with wipers in parked position.

I appreciate that this thread is over a year old but just thought I'd share my recent experience in case it helps someone else in future who searches for this.
I tried to get the wiper blades in the 'service position' as mentioned above and at first it didn't work.
Then I realised that my wipers were set in the Auto position - so I turned them back to Manual, tried again and it worked.

To be honest it doesn't seem to make a lot of difference and doesn't appear to give much more room, so it probably isn't necessary but at least it might explain why you couldn't get it into the 'Service position'.

I think the main benefit I can see is that the driver side is easier to reach in the service position - you don't have to lean over the reach the clip. Passenger side would be easier to reach in the "normal" position. As luck would have it, I'm expecting a pair of new wiper blades tomorrow so this is a timely reminder for me. Thanks!

On the back screen of the other half's Astra GTC, the blade only pulls away from the screen a small amount. But it is a click stop, so you can pull it further out by overcoming the first stop. I.e. a good yank. Yes it goes back again OK. I wonder if Jag arms are similar. Who's brave enough to try?

Okay, fitted mine today. I tried the service position (twice!) but each time they just went into continuous wipe until I released the stalk, at which point they parked normally. But they were easy to fit in that position anyway, just needed a screwdriver to pull up the retaining clip as it was too tight for my fingernail to undo. I looked onine for replacements but all the aftermarket ones which were allegedly right were a pair of 21" blades, whereas my driver's blade is 22". Got the genuine ones from Rimmer in the end, parts C2P1269 (driver's) and C2P5545 (passenger's) for RHD, if anyone's interested.

BTW, I tried the heave it further than the stop trick, but bottled out from the "good yank" (is that an oxymoron?) - it didn't seem likely that it would do anything useful without breaking.

There's no need to 'yank' anything when changing the wiper blades.

The job is easily done when the wipers are in the parked position by releasing the securing tabs with a small flat-blade screwdriver etc.

As described by member JohnGB in this link https://www.ftypeforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=1303.........

“Done it.

“The black tab is indeed the key to it all.”

“The tab is quite a tight fit but reasonably robust. By inserting a screwdriver blade between the tab and the wiper arm hook, then gently but firmly levering the tab, it pops up and the wiper blade can then be removed in the usual fashion.”

Indeed, exactly how I did mine.

Yep, that's the way to do it.

Like you, I also had a look around for replacement wiper blades but some were poor quality. I ended up buying them from my Jag main dealer for £43 inc vat which is more or less the same price as rimmerbros.com.......not a bad price for genuine wiper blades.
