What car?

Good afternoon all,

I am in the market for a new car.

Narrowed it down (I think) to either a BMW 35is or F-Type 3.0 v6 'S'.

I have previously owned a 35i.

Any thoughts, recommendations, has anyone had both that can give pro's and cons too each car?

Any other options for a fun weekend car appreciated (£35k budget)

First thing to decide is whether you want to look like a lot of other cars on the road, or you want something a bit special, and rare. ;)

Bit of both really.

Obviously the F-Type is special, but on the flip side the 35is is pretty rare too.

You’re on an F-Type forum. The responses might be somewhat skewed 😄

F-Type every time. They are beautiful, coupe in particular 😄 Folks stare at it. Ask you questions at petrol stations. Take photos/videos as you are driving. Want to hear it. Let you out at junctions. Get in behind you so they can look a bit longer.

A nearby RAC mechanic, owns a very nice Z4. Had it tuned, lowered & the M alloys. Looks nice but just not for me though.

The F-Type has a personality the BMW can only dream of...

F type 400 sport, should tick your boxes. Rare only 440 made. The most powerful V6 in a F Type and no longer available so will always hold that status.

Little yellow badges that everyone looks for🙂

You pose a good question to choose between the two. Obviously you're on an F Type forum so there's not going to be many votes for the Z4, regardless of the car, but as an Ex Z4 (earlier model 3.0s) I know the BMW product and it's good..
Both have good 6 cylinder engines, plenty of power, similar levels of comfort. Neither are designed for the twisty roads, but a good compromise between cruiser and fun sports car. Both are rare and both distinctive.

Ultimately I chose the F Type over the Z4 and would not go back for many reasons
A supercharged engine just feels better than turbo and the sound of the F is awesome, especially in S with active exhaust and earlier model years. It does appear a class above the mainstream marques, it looks more exotic than it actually is and the general public love it and comment whereas they don't like generally BMW's (or Mercs, Audi, Porsche, etc.). You see the difference as an owner at junctions where drivers let you out, cars pull in a lane on the motorway to let you by and passers by comment favourable. No white van man negative comments and gestures :)
So the downside is that the F is not the same build quality as the Z4 (panel gaps, rattles, etc.) and it's reliability is not so good. Personally never had any real issues, but some have.

I suppose your decision will come down to if the few more hp on the iS over S is worth the money or you want a real change of car.
Test a few and see how you feel

My 2 pence worth.

Even base model F Types turn heads...
While top spec Z does tend to blend in with the base models....if that makes sense.

Never had a Z, but assume usual BMW build quality. I came from F80M3 to Ftype and granted there is a few more rattles in the ftype but they are mostly drowned out by exhaust noise

After having a Z4 (2019 MY) for 18 months, I have to say that the build quality and reliability was not good at all.. passenger seat memory sensors failed within a week… over-the-air update failed and disabled the car (and I mean couldn’t even get the handbrake off to get it on a low loader) and then we had a massive water leak caused by a faulty drain pipe (which they run through the inside of the car). Dealership was terrible.. I think it goes to show that even BMW are not a patch on what they once were. After 18 months of ownership we had had enough and traded it for a new P450 convertible.. never looked back. What a car. And also, I have had so many comments about its looks (almost every time you park it up). I am completely smitten with it.
