Had my first F-Type for 3 weeks and recall saying how much I looked forward to sharing the highs and lows with you all. I think I'm about to have a low 😂

As I left for work this morning the engine warning light came on amber. The 2018 manual tells you it's OK to drive, but may switch to "limp mode". I was less than half mile from home so went back and jumped in the Z4.

Busy day at work, 1 hour traffic jam on the M25 and by the time I got home the Warrantywise number was closed (7pm). Will call them first thing and I've booked into Inchcape, Guildford this coming Monday.

From the manual: "If the lamp illuminates when the engine is running, an emissions-related fault has been detected. The vehicle remains safe to drive with the lamp illuminated, although qualified assistance should be sought as soon as possible."

I know there's many years of experience in this forum and wondered if there's a "likely cause" for the amber light (no unusual noises and no odd behaviour like refusal to change gears noticed). If its "emissions-related" does that mean it's the Cat ?

Good luck, but I think you’ll be lucky to turn up at Inchcape Guildford and find they have a spare courtesy car available!

Thanks simpleR.

Yes, it ran fine but was a very short distance. Never had an O2 sensor go. Reading through all the related posts. Seems quite common and not a major issue. Phew

Wasn't expecting Inchcape to provide a hire car (although it would be dead handy for getting home after I drop mine off). But as I won't have my precious F-Type for the next 4 days, possibly more (depending on the cause), I would expect Warrantywise to.

What SimpleR said, most probably an o2 sensor. Super common issue and it seems like they all go sooner or later. That's the price we pay for those pops and bangs. Usually a simple job.

Similar case here. 4 months with my F-type and had an engine light come on. I had this OBD reader delivered the next day and confirmed that one of the 6 O2 sensors was playing up (bank 2, sensor 3).

TOPDON OBD2 Code Reader Scanner ArtiDiag500S, Engine/ABS/SRS/Transmission Car Diagnostic Tool, 5 Reset Services for Oil/BMS/Bleeding/DPF/Throttle Adaptation, Free Lifetime Upgrade, AutoVin https://amzn.eu/d/heNyGfj

The O2 sensors fitted to the F-type have built-in heaters to improve emissions monitoring and fuel trimming. In my case, the O2 sensor was fine but the heating element packed. I took it to my local Jaguar specialist a few weeks later and had it replaced under the RAC warranty. It sucks that you still need to pay for a diagnostic and an official quote to make a claim but it wasn't too bad (£50). Parts and labour were £230 (30 minutes job) and covered by RAC.

Get this obd reader if you can and keep it in the boot. It works really well, has all the bells and whistles, built-in battery, WiFi, etc. And it won't drain the battery once your done providing that:

- you close the current diagnostic session
- return to the main menu screen
- power the unit down
- disconnect it from the OBD port

Agree with Wshudds that an OBD reader can be invaluable. Also worth noting that if you have the Remote app set up the fault code should be on there and give you some indication of the fault. Good luck getting it sorted.

Very interesting last 2 posts. Definitely think about getting an OBD Reader. And I have the Remote app which I shall now check. Thanks for the useful info.

Yeah, fingers crossed a simple fix and the warranty will cover it. Thanks all.
Sorry to hear a fault cropping up so soon.
There is no need to even consider the warranty. Less than 6 months it will be deemed a pre-existing condition (unless the seller specifically stated the fault at the time of sale, which doesn't seem likely) and the garage duty to repair it without invoking your warranty.

If you're right, I shouldn't take it to inchcape, Guildford for investigation/repair. Just straight back to the dealer (Sports and Touring).

Calling Wartantwise shortly (lunchtime) to get their take on it. I'll keep you posted. Thanks.

Sounds like I shouldn't even take it to inchcape, Guildford for investigation. Just straight back to the dealer (Sports and Touring) ?

I would speak to SAT personally. It's their duty to sort out the issue.

As CSGMART suggests
You must speak to the selling garage first, then put in writing. They have a right to fix the fault and almost certainly will do so.

The owner of SAT is on some of the F Type Facebook groups and often talks about dealers responsibility to fix post sale issues. I think they will be supportive and you may not need your warranty. Good luck sorting

I spoke to S&T first, and agreed I'll advise them the outcome of the investigation. They didn't request me to bring the car to them.

Warrantywise said they'll advise if it's a warranty claim when they've reviewed the investigation results. If they approve a repair, they'll reimburse the cost of the investigation but only up to £100/hr and I'll have to pick up any difference. Also gave me AA number for a tow in case the orange light turns red on my way.

Grrr, Inchcape don't have a coutesty car available which means I'm stuck with a train or taxi 🙄

You also have the right to reject the car within the first 30 days for a full refund (Consumer Rights Act 2015), which might focus the selling dealer's mind.

In my case, the O2 sensor heater started to play up about 4 months after I bought the car. I asked the dealer first for advice and they asked me to book the service in through RAC as they supplied the car with 1 year RAC Platinum warranty with £30K repair limit. I then realised that my local JLR specialist was not a listed garage with RAC. It's not a big deal as you can work with any garage and submit the paperwork by email.

So, yeah, consumer rights, demanding the dealer to fix the car, etc are all valid options but if the car came with an aftermarket warranty, they will expect you to use it in a case like this which involves a simple repair.

The dealers are 1 hour away and the garage they use is not in a convenient place either so I think it was reasonable to follow the process above and build a relationship with my local JLR independent specialist. It only cost me £50 which is less than I would have paid travelling to the dealers or their garage and time off work.

I've had two occasions where a used car I 've bought has had a problem. The first was an adaptive cruise fault which the garage (not a dealer) investigated for a week to prove it wasn't the £1k box at the front, but it was, so they put it through on the warranty. On the second occasion the car developed a wiring fault after a few months and I was told that, being electrical, it wouldn't be covered under the warranty (and it involved dropping the rear axle - 6 hours at dealer rates!). I emailed the dealer principal explaining that the warranty didn't matter since it was deemed to be a pre-existing fault that they had to fix. I had a call the next day from the service manager saying that it was covered by the warranty after all. Garages don't like to pay - they prefer customer, JLR or warranty to stump up.

But I'm in love with my car ! (as Roger Taylor and Queen said)

It's most likely only an O2 sensor. Not giving her up for that. And the majority will be covered either under warranty or by S&T (fingers crossed).
