Warranty Cost - Early cars

Has anyone with an early car (2013 / 14) had a warranty renewal through recently? Preferably for a V8S.

Just trying to get an idea of cost - I pad around £1100 last year - I need to decide if I’m going to have one more year in my car.

Hi,

I paid £1,237 last month, for Extended Warranty with Assistance.
Wasn’t going to bother this year, but chickened out on the last day!
You pay in 10 monthly instalments and can cancel at any time, so seeing as I’m well “in credit” on warranty claims, it was worth the peace of mind.

Hey Lunar,

I’m hoping to buy an f type soon. Would be really keen to understand what warranty claims you have made, who the warranty is with, the cost if you had to fix the issues yourself etc…really want to try and go into this with my eyes open!

Hi,

Every car and model is different.
Your best bet is to do a search on the technical section of the forum - that will tell you everything there is to know.
Once you’ve found a likely car one of our esteemed forum members will be able to run a background check for you from the registration number.

Mine is a 17 plate.

At 3.5 years old I needed a new exhaust and rear window sills were coming away so that was warranty. From memory the exhaust was £1600 (valves stuck) and the sills £1400

At 4.25 years it needed new front lower control arms and a new headlight. Again warranty covered that. Suspension was £2200 and Jaguar did this under good will as the warranty didn't cover it and the headlight was £1600 (wasn't self levelling and dancing around).

Both claims were over £3k and with 5th service and MOT this week I too just spent £1020 on another year on the basis it's already paid for it's self!
The warranty is paid monthly over 10 months 0% finance and can cancel anytime and includes full Jaguar breakdown and £750 towards MOT failures.

All used approved Jaguars at main dealers come with first year for free (and you can ask for a second year for free as well if you negotiate well).

Ahh ok but that’s only if you get a used from Jag…any examples of a non jag warranty?

This f type ownership is sounding like it might be expensive!

I had an RAC platinum warranty for the first year (just expired) which I negotiated when I bought the car. Cost on the paperwork was £699.

I’ve had a new water pump (circa £300 inc labour) and screen wash pump (can’t recall cost), which were covered… however also had lots go wrong that was not covered. Such as it’s in today for a new catalytic converter which wouldn’t have been covered anyway so just bad luck.

My view is that it’s going to need repairs each year and the amount of stuff that is NOT covered under certain warranties makes them not worth it for me. I am happy to take the risk and self insure for things going wrong. My only worry is something major goes wrong with the engine which would really hurt!

No-one can make the decision for you, just check the small print on what is covered before buying a warranty.

It can be, but that’s the price you pay to join the club!

My car had a new drivers handle last year, and a starter motor & passengers handle this year. I’ve probably made the cost if the warranty back this year.
I wouldn’t want to run one without a warranty - there’s enough delicate & expensive bits that go wrong - but as Tjp says the non-Jag warranties aren’t always great.

ALA sponsor the forum and I also looked at that Quinton Wilson one and a few others but the terms and conditions and exclusions are lengthy and the maximum claim limits were £3k per claim and some had excesses and others only covered labour costs up to £95 per hour. IE it rules out Jaguar main dealers and maybe some higher end specialists.

The Jaguar one is three or fours times the price but covers up to the value of the car, no excess, no labour limits, no limit on number of claims and you get £750 MOT cover (which covers discs for example but not pads) and full breakdown. It also covers consequential damage so if something breaks something else then thats covered as well even if that part is not normally covered. Plus there's no paperwork or hassle as the dealer sorts it whilst your in a loan car.
It is expensive, and it's always one of personal choice, for me it's the Jaguar one or nothing.

I’m at the time of year when I need to consider the warranty question. I see yours is £1020/year but other are £1200+ year. Is there a difference in cover?

There are different levels of cover, the (not much) cheaper level has a max payout of £3k.

That said, I think the difference in price is down to the age of the car. It gets more expensive as it gets older.

It goes up every year. There are two different types of cover (select which covers certain bits or extended which seems to cover everything major with no limits) and then with or without breakdown. Mine was:

1st year - £769 (car 3yrs old at renewal)
2nd year - £969 (car 4yrs old at renewal)
3rd year - £1020 (car 5yrs old at renewal)

It does ask for mileage and value of car and presuming there might be price differences in coupe vs convertible, RWD/AWD and 4-pot/v6/v8 as well.

You can't bank on a loan car with a Jaguar warranty repair. Grange Swindon don't have any, apparently, and wouldn't/couldn't organise one.

I would remind them of the T&C's of the contract you took out.

If You have a valid claim, You may claim reimbursement for car hire, but not including fuel and or additional insurance such as excess waivers. You cannot claim for the first 24 hours that You are without Your own Vehicle. After this period, You can claim for a replacement Vehicle for up to seven days. You or Your Jaguar retailer must obtain telephone approval from the Administrator before You use this service. Any replacement Vehicle must be from a real and reputable hire company or Jaguar retailer.

So i'll put my 2 penneth in regarding warrantys, as most of you older members know i've had my V8R for over 8 years now with 5 of them without warranty.
Its pretty much tuned to the max 650+ bhp, the only time it goes into the garage is for servicing or preventative work.
Its a keeper so i keep on top of things, change the oil twice a year, 2 years ago i had ALL the fluids changed.
If you look after them they will look after you, also how many times do people mention that they aren't having problems with their car!!!

I'm with Timbo. I bought mine 3 years ago outside the dealer network. It was an ex Paragon car and hadn't been serviced for 2 years, although it had only done 5000 miles since the previous one. It only came with the dealer's limited warranty. In my 3 years of ownership, it has only needed routine servicing and tyres.....oh and increasingly expensive petrol

I'm touching wood as I write this but, if there are any big expenses further down the line, money saved on warranty will go a long way to offset them.

Same for me. Prestige and performance cars for 30 years. Say 2 concurrent cars @ £750 (today’s money) annum for 30 years would be £45k. Deduct for some residual dealer warranties or add more at realistic £1k/ annum casts. You could play the numbers any way you want but a huge amount

I had a big bill last December of £4k on a RR, (the part was £1800);, but nothing much else on mainly jags, LR and BMW’s in their lifetime.so I’m tens of £k in pocket. F type 5 years and pushing to 60k miles and nothing of note to date.

I look at warranties as the average cost of repairs per annum after they declined what they can, plus a min 50% extra to cover costs and profit, so you always on average lose out.
If you sleep better then for sure pay away and of course like lottery or gambling, there is always someone who wins big and I’m happy for them
