V6S Differential Fill Plug - Did JLR move it?

Hi all,

I am fairly new to the forum and introduced myself about a month ago.

I am planning on changing the differential oil on my late 2016 (2017MY) V6S mechanical LSD.
I have everything ready to go, new plugs, BOT 720 oil, pump etc.

However there is great confusion on my part about the hex fill plug location……in all the differential schematics, workshop manuals, forums etc….ALL show the fill plug as being behind the half shaft towards rear of vehicle…..ie if you were to look at the left side of the differential and imagine as a clock face, the fill plug is at the 4pm position
However on my LSD there is NO fill plug behind the half shaft at all. The only hex plug I can find is in front of the half shaft in the 8pm position?

I did stumble on a second hand parts photo on eBay for a 2017MY f type LSD that also had the fill plug in the 8pm position…..but looking at eBay etc at similar but earlier years LSDs the fill plug is at the 4pm position….

DID JAGUAR CHANGE THE FILL PLUG POSITION SOMETIME AROUND 2016/2017 ?

Is my 8pm position plug definitely the fill plug?……..if so….it’s a whole lot easier to access than if it was at the 4pm position!

Sorry for long description but I want to be 100% sure the fill plug is correct

Finally…..it also seems that 2017MY vehicles onwards have very slightly more oil (wet fill) than earlier years according to the JLR workshop procedure I downloaded for my year…..I don’t have the actual amount to hand (860ml springs to mind?) so if anyone could confirm that would be great

My fill plug on a V6S LSD 2013 was in the 4pm position you mention, but the factory manual indicates there may be variations. I recall going through your thought processes when changing my oil. There were no other hex plugs, so whichever you have 4 or 8, then that's where it is

Wet fill for the V6S is 0.815 - 0.835 from the manual. I advise measuring the amount you take out (for reference) and measure the fill amount and not assume overflow is correct.

Your rear differential oil filler plug is in the same location as mine (see pic) i.e. approx 8pm position on the left hand side of the diff in front of the driveshaft, as explained here.... https://www.ftypeforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?p=67119#p67119

Thank you so much for your responses. So it seems I am not alone with my LSD fill plug being in front of the half shaft.
I will be doing this next Saturday…..ensuring I warm up first, then check I can undo the fill plug..THEN undo the drain plug!!
!…..then lowering car to ground level to ensure I get as much out as possible.

Its an 8mm hex drive and difficult to see till you get the right angle. To fill I just routed a 8mm soft tube through the top of the left wheel (through not over the tyre) and routed it round the front of the spring, throught the frame and into the fill hole. Use a funnel attached to the other end and fill that way. Also put a ring of tape on the end going into the diff about 10mm from the end so you know the tubes in before you fill. Easy.
