V6 Misfire issue

Hi all, my 2014 F-type (32,000 miles) developed the usual issue with misfiring, backfiring and running rough about 1 minute before I got home the other week. Took it to a Land Rover specialist on a flatbed thinking the usual injector issue or some ignition issue.

Skip to now after checking injectors, replacing coil packs and spark plugs there is still the same issue. They recon that there could be “catastrophic engine failure” after running “a lot of tests”

They still don’t know the exact issue but I for one am really surprised given the mileage and I wasn’t exactly pushing the engine at the time.

Does anyone have any advice on what I should do next as a full engine strip down/rebuild isn’t something I want to pay for nor is it something I would expect with these engines.

Cheers

Can't help with the diagnosis, but unless you bought the car new you have no real idea of how it was (mis)treated by previous owner(s). Hope you can get a successful outcome. I've had a couple of XKs with the previous generation of engines and they ran to over 60,000 and 90,000 without issues.

Depends how much you trust the “specialist”. If they’re experienced JLR technicians you’ve got a real problem. If you’re unsure how good they are consider getting a second opinion, but the cost of moving the car etc may be prohibitively expensive.
It’s highly unusual to see catastrophic engine failure that can’t be obviously attributed to something (timing chain etc). It’s slightly strange they aren’t being a bit more specific.

It could be they just don’t want the work? An engine strip and rebuild is likely less profitable than service and small fixes on a per hour basis.

You say Land Rover specialists, so do they understand Jaguars?
What are the 'lots of tests' and what results? What codes are shown, before and after the various coil plug and injector swaps?
I personally would not trust someone to proceed further who hadn't shown diagnostic codes to indicate which coil pack was at fault and I had detailed lists of the outcome of the 'lots of tests'. If you have these post on here and experts can comment.
