Usual Oil Consumption

Does anyone know what the usual / expected oil consumption should be by an MY2017 V6S RWD Coupe?

My car was given its 60-month service by Hatfields of Shrewsbury in November 2021 when the mileage was recorded at 30321 miles.

Today with a mileage of 31417 miles the Cold Oil Level readout shows half full/empty ( for 1096 miles of use which does seem to be excessive, especially as the service interval on miles is 16,000.

When I took the car to Hatfields of Shrewsbury for its first service I remarked that the exhaust pipe ends seemed to soot up / blacken very quickly, the Service manager assured me that this was normal.

I tend to use the car for longer journeys and whilst my driving style might be described as quick it is not at all boy racer.

My V6 has consumed zero oil in 5yrs and 36000 miles.
The exhausts do get sooted up which is normal.

Unlike BMW or Audi . All Jaguar models cars Do not burn oil , I know this as a fact as this current car is my fifth . Is your car on level ground.. could be they never filled it to top or some times the oil sensor gives a faulted reading , mine shows the same as yours between half to 3 quarters normally , if you are worried put in 250ml and keep your eye on it

Forgot to say 250ml is the space between bars on the oil reading

I really wouldn’t go adding oil when you don’t know if the reading is correct - you really don’t want to overfill the engine.
When you say cold do you mean having left the car for a few hours / overnight?
Get it up to normal operating temperature, park on level ground and check after 10 minutes. It could be that the oil level indicator is leaking down over time when standing.

My V6 didn't use any oil in nearly 6 years and 35,000 miles. As mentioned already the exhaust pipes do get sooty very quickly, which is normal.

However, my V8 engine was saying it was using 250ml per 1000 miles, when I first got it. (2 notches on the level indicator). I mentioned it to the dealer, who updated the dipstick software at the service shortly afterwards. My oil level has stayed on full, for the 1700 miles since then.

10 mins :lol: more like half an hour :roll: although you can get a quick reading by opening the bonnet then check the level

i've had 4 Jags and none of them consumed any oil between services. And the 10 minute wait to check the level works for me.
One point to note is that the reading is very sensitive to inclines - you really need to be dead level to get a true reading, even a slight downward slope tips mine into reading overfilled. Upward slopes obviously show less oil than the true reading.

Just to chime in, my experience is also that these engines don't use up oil. Before the F-Type I had the same engine in an XF for four years and it never needed topping up.

And as said tail pipe soot is normal. I get the impression it's more noticeable after shorter blasts than after longer fast drives. When I watched my XF being dyno tested I was surprised by the clouds of soot it spat out.

Must be the 5 jaguars ive had that don't give a reading after 10mins. Countless times like parking at m&s being in store for at least 20 mins then trying it and getting "not available " . SCM just seen you had participated on a similar thread last year on the yank forum , I know ther is a link "how to " reset the oil sensor perhaps you could post it please

My previous V6 would only show the oil level when the car was up to temperature. The current car always displays a reading irrespective of engine temperature, which was a surprise.

That said, it doesn't appear to vary much hot or cold , even though the correct method is a hot engine 10-30 mins after shutdown.

I have checked this morning and the oil level is half full/empty whilst the car is parked on my level garage floor.

Disturbingly if I take it out of the garage the ground slopes about 10 degrees and then the gauge shows empty with a warning signal.

Hardly disturbing, if the car's not level you can't expect an accurate reading (see my previous post above). I presume your slope is upwards ...

Mine is quite fussy, needs a good 20+ min drive, then stop and lock up for at least 10 min and then read the display.
It always states full exactly but if I park even slightly downhill it says overfill so must be bang on max. On my drive, which is steep and uphill when I've parked it never reads and just says oil level unavailable regardless.

I'm guessing that different MY (model years) may differ. Also worth noting that the display can be changed from user mode to service mode which displays some average amount which yours may be in and therefore a trip back to dealer may be required to double check everything.

These are the notes I have, make of them what you will ...

After refilling the oil:
− Wait 5 min
− Start the engine and allow to run for 10 min
− Stop the engine
− Ensure on flat ground with bonnet open
− Allow 10 minutes from the engine switch off for the engine oil level to stabilise
− Turn ignition on
− Access the engine oil level display
− Press the cruise control cancel button twice within 2 seconds
This display is now the LIVE reading of the engine oil level.
− If oil level is correct
− Turn the ignition off
− Turn the ignition on
− Press and hold the cruise control cancel button for more than 5 seconds
− Turn the ignition off
− Turn the ignition on
− Scroll through the trip menu to access the engine oil level display
− Make sure that the average oil level value has now been updated
This display is now the AVERAGE reading of the engine oil level.

Good post , way I do it , after draining oil out I put in 6.5 lr then wait 5 mins and start engine , let it run for 30 secs then go in for a cuppa for at least 30 mins . Then I take a reading , the 6.5 l normally takes level just on half way on gauge I then add another half a litre tucking it to just the bar under the full mark , I don't like to fully full as I like to keep my eye on it , on the old xkr yes that carry on using the stalk and fog lamp cruise button but on the F type No , all that is required is do this , open bonnet and drivers door , put ignition on but don't start engine , place your 2 feet on the pedals for 2 mins , it resets it , and message on dash will say oil reset complete

I think that procedure is to reset the "service required" indicator. At least, that's what it does on mine, though it only needs 10 seconds on the pedals, not 2 minutes, is that an additional option on service reset?

That's for the service reset, not to reset the oil level, though.
