USB Music player

Hi folks

I’m on the jagged edge of plunging into f-type ownership. So please be kind…..

I note that the f-types do not have a CD player (maybe as a rare option on older models, but I’m looking MY18 onwards)

Now, before you all jump on me and tell me about Apple Car Play I should point out that I’m an old gimmer. As such, I have an extensive CD collection which I only ever listen to in the car.

Now, I’ve noticed that there’s one or two USB plugs in the centre arm rest. So, my question is….. can I rip my CDs onto a memory stick, then plug it into one of those USB plugs? Then somehow ‘send’ the music to the cars infotainment system?

Yes, I know. I’m way behind the curve on technology. But at least I’m not planning on putting my 1926 wind-up gramophone in the boot. Although, come to think of it…….

I maybe inclined to comment on this post and aid you, but your profile is bereft of any info other than V6.COM which is meaningless.

I think what he meant was welcome! 🙂

Yes you can do this.

I have an old iPod that lives in the armrest but if you want to rip your cd’s losslesly as .wav etc. then it’s worth checking the maximum usb drive size you can use, how best to format it, and to get the album artwork to display nicely.

I’m sure others who have done this will come along shortly with advice.

In the mean time it’s worth using the search function on the forum - I’m sure that “USB” will return lots of info.

Also be good to have a short introduction to your good self and what flavour of F-Type you are looking for.

We have a member on here who can look up a car’s history from the registration number which is a very useful help, although he has been kept mighty busy these last 6 months or so!

I have a 2014 V6S and it has both a CD player in the centre armrest (I thought they all did to be honest) and a USB port. And yes, I have a USB stick with about 50 albums on which go straight to the “my music” sources of the car infotainment system, it works well.

I also use a USB stick in the centre console area, loaded with thousands of my ripped CDs. It has glitched once (about 15 months ago) in the 4 years I've had the car, but I just wiped the USB stick and copied the music back in and it has been fine again since. The large centre touchscreen shows the USB stick as a new audio source when it is plugged in and away you go.

I play my iTunes library via USB in my MY18. Formatted as FAT32.

Music is a mix of wav, mp3 and iTunes format.

Not all the cover art shows up, but all the music plays.

I believe that wav files don't include cover art. In other cars I've used flac files as almost as high quality as wav but takes less storage and includes cover art

It's not just the wav files.

I've ripped my CD collection to high quality MP3s which don't have cover art but the system seems to find the relevant images when they play. It uses Gracenote to do this by analysing the file content and retrieving the data from online servers - you may need a user SIM for this, or it may work through the embedded car SIM.

Super responses, thanks guys

To Be Honest…. I’m also looking at BMW M4s as well. Which is like trying to compare apples with oranges. I know this. But in some ways the Beemer is still rooted in older tech. Stuff that I understand. And M4s have CD players right there in the dash.

There’s pros and cons to both cars….. the f-type I would buy would be the V6 AWD P380 MY18/19. The M4 would be a 3.0L Competition, MY19/20 which is RWD, and almost a second faster to 62MPH. DCT rather than the excellent Jaguar (ZF) auto box.

The Jaguar sounds better and looks better. The BMW is more powerful, practical and after the initial hit, it hold its value slightly better.

But do I want to be ‘that bloke’ in a beemer that everyone hates?

It’s a tough choice…..

STOP THROWING CHAIRS AT ME !!!!!

You'd get more compliments and let out at junctions in the F-Type, plus when you take your significant other out to dinner you'd be able to use the old "I left my wallet in the Jaaaaag" excuse to avoid paying. It's a win-win

Instead of looking at the 0-62 figures, you should focus on the in-gear overtaking times as that's real world driving stuff. I've always found BMW's to be precise and have to be driven on the edge to get the best from them, the Jag's having a more refined GT feel to them. You want to get out of a car at the end of a journey with a smile on your face and feeling refreshed, not exhausted and broken. Those in the know will give a nod towards the performance BMW's but to the normal everyday person, the F-Type will get the nod of approval

I'm sure you could retrofit a CD player or find a portable one to stick in the glovebox or centre cubby hole, but the best thing would be to rip them to a USB stick and use that

Rip your CD’s to MP3 put them on a USB stick, some F-Types have a built in hard disk so you can transfer them on there to free up the USB slot.

I never smile when I get out of my F-Type - it means the pleasure has ended. Not strictly true, but you get my meaning, I hope. ;)

Not sure I could choose my car based on if it has a CD player, MP3's on a USB stick gives you hours and hours of music, and no worries where to put the CD's after 10 tracks

I have a CD and USB in my Evoque.. never used the CD player once.

I’ve literally just chopped my BMW 435 convertible for an F-Type.

The BMW infotainment system and I drive is very good - except that it continually resets my playlists back to the beginning, which, after a few years, is more than slightly irritating and the main reason why the BMW has gone and I’m now waiting to collect my sixth Jag. (I also have an I-Pace currently. The infotainment system in the I-Pace doesn’t annoy me at all. )

My “new” F-type is MY2018, a P340, which I expect to be slaughtered for by the Better Half. Can’t wait for next Monday when I collect the new beast.
