Trip to Ankara

I live in Dubai and I’m shortly moving to Ankara for two years. I am taking my convertible with me. These are the loading photos of the car being transferred from one low loader to another and then hydraulically lifted ip do it could be driven into the container.

The journey will start by shipping container on the Maersk Hamburg sailing from Jebal Ali , UAE , from the Persian Gulf, through the Straights of Hormuz, on to the Gulf of Oman, then south down to Cape Town South Africa before turning north again. The ship will enter the Mediterranean and sail east to Port Said in Egypt to refuel and unload, before the final leg to Istanbul where it will dock. The journey will take approximately 55 days and it hopefully will arrive safe and sound 10th September.

Next by road container it will finally arrive in Ankara. This journey will be almost 10,000 miles. This is nothing compared to the sea miles the car has already travelled.

When it was first exported from the UK it was built to US specifications, sailed to Baltimore where it sat unregistered until it was sold as excess inventory to the UAE , being purchased by Jaguar Middle East North Africa where it was used by the Engineering Department as a test and development vehicle, before having its first retail registration 24th December 2020, with 1000 miles The journey by sea from the UK via the USA had been 20,000 miles.

So when it gets to Ankara it will have travelled a total of 30,000 miles by sea. But that is not the end of its nautical adventures. In two years time it will be going to Madeira, another 2,700 miles.

This car was built in November 2015. It will have travelled 32700 miles by sea. At the moment the odometer has not even reached 12,000 miles.

All of the lights have been changed to ECE, and the speedo set digitally to kph, ready for Turkish Transport Ministry inspection.

Hopefully everything will be fine. Nothing to worry about !

Do you have to disconnect the battery for the journey?
If not be sure to double lock it so it goes into sleep mode for such a long journey.
Hopefully you can be around for the unloading / transfer ops.

Loving those wheels!

Hello from Dubai and good luck in Turkey! I really must find a local car club / patient Jag dealer so I can look at a P75 close up to help inform my thoughts on getting a UK car when I eventually move home. Do you have any suggestions at all?

Unfortunately they said they were going to disconnect the battery but changed their minds. I think it was my warning message stuck to the boot lid about the consequences of shutting the lid with a disconnected battery.

So now the car is alarmed in Sleep Mode with the drivers window open. It was fitted with a brand new battery minutes before being loaded, so it might make it to Ankara. Nothing can be done now as the container is in the Gulf of Oman heading for Mundra in India. Cleared the Straits of Hormuz! Yes, it’s the completely opposite direction to Turkey but this journey stops and loads at lots of ports over the next 55 days. It’s a pity there wasn’t a passenger cabin!

I trust you put it in Transport Mode? InControl might get upset if it detects the car is moving while asleep!

I don’t know how you would do that. I read somewhere about Transport Mode, but it looked like it was something to do with the original shipping from the factory, and it needed a special relay and a software intervention. So the car is going to be very upset!

Tracking is showing it now headed to Mumbai. This is like going on a mystery tour. I think I should have been a stowaway.

You need an InControl subscription, then in the app click More (bottom right), then Vehicle Settings (at the top) and Transport and Service modes are at the bottom of the page.

IMG_6807.pngI have a subscription to the Incontrol Jaguar Remote, if that is what you mean?
There is no “More” , and the layout is not the same as you mention. Vehicle Settings does not mention Transport mode. It only has settings for Wake Up Timer and Record Journeys.
The app might be a UAE version though.IMG_6808.pngView attachment 1

Interesting. Or just plain weird. Since last night I've been unable to login to Remote anyway - I keep getting "Generic error" and tells me I've not been able to sign in. Anyone else having this issue or is it just me? My subs don't expire until June 2027.

I don’t have the service and transportation option on my Jaguar In Control app, but it is on the Land Rover one.

The battery was supposed to have been disconnected at loading, so I didn’t even consider Transport mode.

But the ship is now in Mumbai and will arrive in Salalah, Oman on Wednesday 30th. I don’t know where after that, but it is supposed to be headed in South Africa’s direction before sailing to Tangiers.
If the car wakes up at any point there could be a big problem! So I hope it stays fast asleep until I wake it in Ankara.

The car was pinged in Gurjarat , India, then Mumbai, next Salalah, and is currently positioned midway between Madagascar and Tanzania, just passing the Comoros Islands.
Next port stop is probably going to be Tangiers.

I have spotted a 2021 V8 coupe R type with 40,000 miles going for £25k. I’m quite tempted. But it might get me in trouble with she who must be obeyed!

The ship docked at Tangiers a couple of days ago, sailed to a docked at Valencia, and is now on its way to Port Said , Egypt.
So it won’t be long now before it arrives here in Ankara.
F-types are a relatively rare sight in Dubai, but so far I’ve not seen any in Ankara.
I’m lucky to have a lock up underground garage here. This is a city of four seasons ranging from 40C in the summer to snow in the winter. Winter tyres are mandatory from November to April.

With the steep hills all over the city, winter tyres will not just be mandatory , but essential too.

Today the car arrived in Ankara after sailing halfway around the world. It has taken two months so far. No damage of any sort. Just a bit of exotic dust to clean. The adventure has not yet finished. I have more paperwork to complete and a refundable customs security bond to pay before I can drive the car.

I’m pleased to say that the battery is working and started the car at first press even though the alarm had been on for over two months with one window half open. I wasn’t expecting that.

The inControl remote is now active again and working as it should.

Once the car is registered it will have blue plates which are different to the local plates that are white, front and rear. So far I haven’t seen any blue plates on the road. I’ve not seen any Jags and haven’t seen a convertible of any sort except a MINI.

Hopefully drivers here will let me out on junctions. I don’t think anyone has ever seen an F-type in Ankara. The Blue plate indicates it is owned by a foreigner here on a temporary basis. I hope it is not a target for road rage!
