torque spec underbody brace

SOLDES

Hello everyone.

I'm chasing an awful metal to metal squeak heard in the cabin when the car has warmed up. So loud it has taken all the fun out of driving the car.
I think I can pinpoint it to the underbody heatshields (1 to the rear, one in the middle and two in the front running up the firewall.
The sound can be replicated by wiggling the center heat shield above the driveshaft and I want to remove it. It should be possible to rotate it around the driveshaft but there's an X shaped brace. Would anyone have the torque specification for the four bolts please? (P300)
My wife recorded it sitting in the car with closed doors and me moving the shield if anyone is interested. I just need to convert it to something which can be posted.

Thanks in advance,
Nick

The TOPIx attachment is for the V6 and contains the rear subframe X-brace torque settings.....is this the 'X shaped brace' that you are referring to?

I would think the P300 is the same but I’m not sure?

Goes without saying that the heatshield/s should be reinstalled after you’ve finished with them.

Videos can be uploaded onto YouTube then copy and paste the link in your post.

I’ve attached a screenshot of the V6 brace (inc torque setting) that's located below the intermediate exhaust pipe. Again, I would think the P300 is the same but I’m not sure?

From your recording it sounds like it could be coming from the engine compartment? However, you’ve said that you can pinpoint it to the underbody heatshields and the sound can be replicated by wiggling the centre heatshield above the driveshaft (propshaft).

In case it helps, here’s a link to the under floor heatshields diagrams and part details....

Very much appreciated !
Yes that's the one and it's identical.
The engine wasn't running during the recording or I would have bigger issues I guess (unless it was a belt) ;)
Test this afternoon and I'll report back

👍

Lol, doesn’t half sound like the engine is running in your recording and noise produced by a belt or supercharger issue.

Hope you can sort it

45Nm for the P300

Strange how you have that information which slightly differs to the TOPIx V6 info I posted? Not that 3Nm makes any real difference for those bolts lol

The brace on the P300 is identical to the V6 as confirmed by SOLDES.

Either way, its resolved, what a relief. I was inches away from selling the car.
Strange that the dealer took 3 days of 'trying different things' and it only took me 10 minutes of doubting how to jack the car and 1 minute to identify the problem

Must have run over something which in it's turn deformed a shield to make contact with the body.
Thanks guys !
Nick

Hi Philskill,

I’m not sure why the 2.0L brace torque setting of 45Nm is slightly different to the V6 and V8 which are both the same at 48Nm? Nothing to be concerned about though, for those four bolts.

Good to see that SOLDES fixed the 'metal to metal squeak' issue without too much difficulty, instead of selling his car!
