Third party warranties?

Hi all,

Car is coming up to a year in my ownership (time flies!) and I've got a month or so left of my year's warranty the garage (a main Toyota dealer - not Jaguar) sold it with. It's a 65 plate MY16 so it's a few years old now!

I've had a look at third party warranties (mainly AA or Warrantywise?) and I'm struggling to see if its worth it or not. The quotes I got when I looked a couple of months ago are around the £7-800 mark which I can afford but isn't a small sum of money if they're not worth the paper they're written on.

My main worries with my car are big failures - I know they're not hugely common but I've seen some horror stories, particularly about supercharger issues and fuel injectors (the failing - then getting stuck).

Has anyone got any particular recommendations (or 'definitely don't bother') for third party warranties? All the policies seem to be worded in a way so that they could weasel out of pretty much anything if I've not EXACTLY followed their protocol or if my service is 6 hours later than they think it should have been??

I should note I've had no major issues with the car since purchasing, its been mostly a dream! I have an intermittent warning light on my dash for the stability control which Jaguar have looked at but been unable to replicate, it occasionally flashes up and goes away immediately on engine start and never registers in the code reader. That is it and I'm hoping if that gets worse it'll be covered by my existing warranty anyway since I've reported it before.

Any thoughts? I've had a look through the first couple of pages of 'search' on the forum but most posts are about Jaguar extended warranty or specific issues with existing warranties.

I extended my warranty for a year when the 3 year one expired and had a couple of minor things fixed (diff seals, cargo hatch, headlamp washer and loose fuel pump connector) but didn't renew after that and the car's been fine since, just routine maintenance, tyres and fuel! I have a trusted independent so I consider myself covered for major issues - he's good at diagnosis and finding the least expensive route for any fix - sometimes it's really hard to get him to take my money!

It's really a peace of mind thing - if you're comfortable with a bir of risk, self insure - they're really pretty reliable cars if you look after them properly and don't abuse them.

There are lots of threads on here about warranties, to buy or not risk, savings, etc. so I’d run a search and read some of the info.

As I’ve posted before I never buy and self fund any issues and am hugely in pocket with multiple cars over decades. Overall these are insurance policies so they pay out a fraction of the actual premiums to cover their costs, marketing, commission and of course profit.

Read the T&C’s in detail and decide if the policy really covers you for what you want, then buy for peace of mind or save your money.

I currently have one with the RAC. I seem to have a coolant leak and a failed heated windscreen so I'll see how I get on and report back.

Thanks guys, Paddy any reports on ease of claims would be much appreciated.

CJ maybe I just didn't go enough pages back but most I could see talked about Jaguar warranties (which my current one is not therefore I can't extend)!

I'm in two minds but I'll do a bit more digging, I have enough cash to cover minor/mid level faults it's a catastrophic failure I'm most worried about. This is my third car and my other two have always been under manufacturer warranty so will be the first time I've ever lived with the risk!

I've had no catastrophic failures in the 4 Jags I've had in the past 16 years. Water pumps and XK8 coolant expansion tank were the main parts I had to replace. Oh, and fuel and tyres, of course! :)

The more I read online the more I’m leaning towards not worth the paper they’re written on

I got a quote from warranty wise - £1000!!!! - and they’ve tried to phone me 3 times and left me a voicemail today to try and get me to buy the policy. That’s put me off enough itself…

Think I’ll just find myself a nice jaguar specialist that won’t charge me main dealer prices for good servicing and hope in the remaining years of ownership nothing goes really wrong, though unfortunately I don’t think there is a specialist in Cumbria!

My independent isn't a Jag specialist but he's never come up short on anything Jag related that I've asked him. He's just very competent. :)

We’ve got an independent that’s always been spot on with my fiancé’s cars - trouble is he’s driven a Hyundai Getz, a Ford Focus and a Hyundai i20 so not really comparable to the cat!
Maybe I’ll give them a go

Not sure if the UK is the same as Australia, though our law is based on UK law. We have Australian Consumer Law which protects you against unreasonable failure of items but to the value the car is now worth. That is a car can't suddenly stop working after 3 years if that is the warranty period and so the manufacturer still needs to deal with you fairly in getting it repaired. It does mean you might need to argue with them but you are on the right side of the law in Australia. Extended warranty or independent warranty on used vehicles provides peace of mind but just been offered on a used car 3 year at over $4K by the dealer and when I have checked through insurers it is just over $2K (dealers rip you off). But even so it is a lot of money for something where I would likely at best collect on once and then it might be a few thousand. The conditions are also interesting in that unlike a standard warranty or insurance the warranty providers decision is final on any payout and they are under no obligation to payout. Rather have the argument with the manufacturer.

With semi hand built cars, there are good ones and bad ones.

Generally speaking though the F-type is bulletproof. The V8 lump has certainly been out for many, many years installed in many models, the V6 not so well proven.

Problem with 'tinternet is you really only see the negative side of things, I believe this to be a minority.
This, I believe frightens people into believing they need the assurance of having a safety net....a bit like driving with DSC mode on or off, AWD vs RWD etc.

I for one, definitely advocate against any extended warranty, having learnt that after 8 years of trouble free motoring, anything that was going to be a potential issue would have raised its ugly head by now.
Warranties, like many insurances these days, pray on the minds of peoples paranoia, worry and anxieties, I guess they have always done that historically.

At the end of the day, you pay your money, you make the choice, but hopefully this may give a different view.

TOP TIP - I you want to enjoy your motoring, don't read what's on Farcebook F-Type groups, any of them.
It's full of absolute c0ckwobles giving such misguided and incorrect advice...I'm a member of them all!

must agree with Tel, don't know how many made and on the road, would be intersting to see real figures of number V issues in say catogaries say £0- 250, £250- 1000, and over 1000, as its such a good car bet the numbers will be low
