So I guess we are all quite conscientious about having regular JLR spec. engine oil changes on these cars.

I'm also intending to have the transmission oil and filter changed shortly as the JLR service schedule recommendation of 10 years / 160k miles in no way stacks up with the 8 years / 60k miles that ZF themselves recommend for this 8HP70 box.

Likewise I recently changed the diff oil for similar reasons - well worth the cost of a litre of oil and the satisfaction of doing it.

The supercharger oil is not mentioned at any service interval - and yet judging from YouTube videos showing the old oil it no doubt gets quite a hard life. So what are people's thoughts on this - has anyone actually done it?

It's a bit of a pig to get to the plug and a thin tube needed to poke under the scrolls to suck it all out, so I'm leaning towards the £150 that a good independent specialist charges - and at that price it seems a bit of a no-brainer to get it done for peace of mind.

A bit of info. below and please don't just post more links, I'm looking for anyone's experience on the topic of supercharger oil generally - although ideally with an F-Type.

I think it’s wise to follow the ZF oil service schedule recommendation for the ZF 8HP70 (8 speed automatic transmission).

Also, as stated on this forum many times, it’s worth renewing the Limited Slip Differential (LSD) oil more frequently than Jaguar specifies (64,000 miles/48 months). This is because the oil can become contaminated and loses its lubrication properties which in turn can ruin the LSD. I’ve already had this done when the pinion seal was renewed on my car last year but going forward I’ll be renewing the LSD oil every 20,000 miles or 48 months (whichever comes first). As I’m only doing approx 4,000 miles a year it’s not any different to the Jaguar schedule as I’ll be renewing the LSD oil at 48 months anyway but if I was doing much higher mileages I'd be changing the oil sooner.

I haven’t yet renewed the Supercharger oil (which isn’t mentioned in the Jaguar service schedules) as my car has just turned 5 years old and it has done 38,000 miles, but after doing some research on the subject I will be having it renewed by my local independent garage approx every 50,000 miles.

Here's the info.....

The Supercharger (SC) is a sealed system with its own special oil. According to the JLR Workshop Manual and the AJ133 Technical Training doc the oil is "for life" and never needs changing. But JLR's meaning of "for life" seems to be far less than stated around 100,000 miles or 10 years whichever comes first.

Maybe one or two very early F-Types with high miles on them could benefit from a SC oil change but that's about it.

and......

Apparently the Supercharger (SC) has to come off to drain and refill the SC oil which involves a lot of work, but it has been done without lifting the SC. This guy explains how he did it (he has an XKR with the same AJ133SC engine as the F-Type R) but it's not a job for the unskilled person. When he did the job on his 8 year old car with 54k on clock, he noted that "Horrible smelly" gunk came out. He recommends that the Supercharger oil should be renewed at approx every 50,000 miles.

Now that he’s done the job he said he is way more prepared to do it again (if need be) as he has new long reach slim tools which make the job much easier.

Yes, I’d seen those videos and no, the supercharger does not need to come off if you put a little effort in, but thanks anyway.

Yep, as you can see from my post, the guy did the job without the need for the Supercharger to come off.

I’m not sure which videos you’re referring to as there’s none on the links I provided?......Although there’s plenty of good photos :D

Going back to the ‘ZF 8HP70’ 8 speed automatic transmission fluid, something very important to bear in mind when changing the fluid is the fluid temperature. ZF Germany have said this about it.......”Please be careful, because you need any kind of tester to read out the temperature while you change the oil. If the temperature is not correct, you could damage your transmission!”

Here’s more info from ZF on the subject.......

Filling ZF transmission oil:

Be very careful when filling oil. Over- or underfilling or using oil at the wrong temperature can damage the transmission.

Open the automatic transmission's filler plug and top up the specified ZF-LifeguardFluid until it runs out of the filler hole. Do not use any supplementary additives or cleaning agents as they would alter the transmission oil's chemical composition.

Running the engine:

Let the engine run at idling speed and then select positions R and D one after the other. Afterwards, shift gears according to the table below, depending on the transmission variant (A, B or C).

Transmission variant ‘A’ / Gears to be selected 1st to 3rd / Hold gear for 3 sec.

Transmission variant ‘B’ / Gears to be selected 1st to 4th / Hold gear for 10 sec.

Transmission variant ‘C’ / Gears to be selected ‘all’ / Hold gear for 10 sec. / Additional operations: Keep the engine speed at 2,000 rpm for 30 seconds to fill the torque converter with oil.

Checking the oil temperature:

Now check the oil temperature. It must be between 30°C and 35°C max. (6HP) or 40°C max. (8HP). Allow the engine to warm up or cool down to regulate the oil temperature.

Checking the fill level:

Once the oil temperature is between 30°C and 35°C (6HP) or 40°C (8HP), check the fill level. If no oil is running out of the filler hole, the quantity of oil is too small. If this is the case, top up with the specified ZF-LifeguardFluid until it runs out of the hole.

Let the engine run until the transmission temperature is at 40°C and only a few drops spill out of the filler hole. Now close the filler plug and tighten it to the specified tightening torque.
 
Yep, the temperature check was all covered in my initial link above.

Back on OP subject please - anyone with some actual blower oil change experience - Jaguar or otherwise?

Your original post included information on the differential oil. Also on the auto transmission oil which you said are intending to have changed shortly, hence the reason I included the relevant info.

Still can’t see the videos you refer to on the links I provided on the OP's subject of 'Supercharger Oil Change'? :lol:

The original post was about the supercharger oil and whilst your info is appreciated about various other oil changes, let's try and keep this one on topic.

The OP’s original post was about the Supercharger oil and also contained information on the differential and auto transmission oil which is why I included it in my reply along with the Supercharger oil info.

This used to be such a considerate site and a daily joy to check in on - really enjoyed the helpful and supportive attitude and ability to have the odd jest with people, all in good spirit, in the 5.5 years I've been on this and the sister XE forum.

I'd appreciate it being locked now, If I may request, as it's unfortunately going nowhere useful.
