sudden major coolant loss???

Got the F Type out to clean and dry it ready for hibernation, had a run after the wash to dry brakes etc, got back and opened bonnet, doors and boot dry off the shuts, thought i could smell coolant ? Look at road and its a wash with it!!!
Engine was running, look underneath and its running off undertray front nearside, low coolant display in dash , so quickly put it in garage (by now its dark)
Got torch and look down LH side of engine, undertray has it pooled on nearside???? Cant see where its coming from??
Help, anyone had similar or can suggest what's likely to fail suddenly, hose? water pump, radiator?
Curiously i've noticed a whiff of coolant for a while previously but kept eye on the level in expansion and its stayed the same virtually? Seems like whatever it was has given up, hopefully a hose would be nice (so long as it isn't under supercharger)

Look forward to your replies.
(had to happen now instead of light nights, I hate cars!!!)

Could be the plastic pipes - lots of reports on the US forum about these becoming brittle with heat and leaking. The bad news is that they're a PITA to get at - I thiink it involves removing the supercharger. The good news is that the parts have been redesigned so shouldn't give problems in the future.

If it is your issue, some related part numbers are (no idea how many are relevant):

Connector tube AJ811997
Outlet pipe AJ813865
Outlet pipe o-ring (2) AJ811350
Engine coolant pipe AJ813917
Radiator coolant hose T2R7744
Engine coolant pipe C2Z28258
Heater outlet pipe, crossover pipe AJ814007
Thermostat kit C2Z19929
Expansion tank overflow tube ("radiator header tank bleed hose") T2R5910

Yep, “Y” pipe under supercharger - crap design, but new ones supposedly improved. Had that, and also a water pump replaced under warranty at different times. When “Y” pipe went I thought it was smoke at first 😳

When the expansion tank broke on my XK8 people thought I had a steam engine under the bonnet as I drove it to the garage for a fix!

Thanks for replies,
I'm hoping it's not the *Y* piece under the charger, there was no steam or anything
(bear in mind it was hot engine at normal temp on gauge)
i didn't notice till saw flow of coolant across the tarmac so I'm leaning towards something low down near bottom of radiator,
I'll have another look in daylight today and report later.
cheers

If the fans weren’t throwing coolant around under the bonnet it sounds more hopeful - fingers crossed for you and let us know how you get on.

Had another look ,but alas cant see anything without removing undertray and shroud around radiator, sometimes you wish the bonnet didn't open forward!
Decided to leave it for another day as it started to rain hard again!!
As Lunar has said there doesn't seem to be any over the engine only in/on the undertray so hopefully its low down.

Put the car onto ramps today and removed undertrays to expose bottom of the radiator and hoses, there's plenty of coolant around that area !
(surprising how many leaves and crap there was as well)
But unfortunately nothing obvious that was split or ruptured ,without refilling with water its impossible to diagnose I feel, so for the moment the car is hibernating under its cover as it is till warmer weather returns.
I can then refill with just water without fear of freezing to locate leak!
Ctek on and SORN'd from end of month.

Hi,

I'm reviving your topic which is of interest to me.

Did you manage to determine the cause of the engine coolant leak and fix it? I'm assuming it wasn't the 'Y' pipe etc?

I had the same on my 64 plate v6, six months ago , it was under super charger , had all the pipes renewed and there was an upgrade n the supercharger bearings have it done while supercharger off.it was about £1500 with parts.

From what I can see so far my sudden coolant leak appears to be coming from one or two hoses at the front left (nearside) of the engine below the left air intake tube then running down and off the engine undertray which is similar to the OP. I’d be interested to hear how he resolved the issue on his car?

On the next dry and convenient day I'll be removing the air intake tube to get a better look below it....

Can I ask where you got the work done?
My car is a 2013 and I'm thinking of getting this done as the consenses seems to be it's more a matter of when than if the Y pipe will fail.
I also have that knock when you turn the engine off so pretty sure the coupler in the supercharger snout? needs replaced.

Worth having a read through this first...

Thanks, that does indeed sound like mine, and my VIN is in the range mentioned.

In that case (and if you’ve read through the link I provided earlier) you shouldn’t have any concerns.

Turned out that my sudden coolant leak was this...
