Strange noise when turn from steering column

Hi guys,
for some time now I've been hearing a strange noise that seems to come from the steering column. It sounds like a "tack", dry. It happens every now and then, especially when I turn all the steering wheel all the way and then turn it back. but it does not always manifest itself.

here it is heard in the twenty-third second

here it is heard in the tenth second

Has anyone had this strange noise?

I tightened these bolts and the 4 bolts that hold the steering column to the car. the noise unfortunately persists

You tightened them? So they were loose?
What car and version to do you have?

If you go over a speed bump in straight line do you get a knocking noise from front?

Yes I tightened these screw. They weren't particularly loose but I gave them a squeeze anyway.
I don't feel anything when I go over bumps from the front.
I hear this noise when I turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and go backwards.

My car is a MY19 P300 and I have 28000km.

sure its from the front and not the diff? when i was getting the dreaded diff noise before changing the oil it was not obvious where it was cming from as it resonates through the floor …… just a thought as it sounded like it was underneath my seat to me

Second video doesn't play for me but from the first it seems that at the point of the 'click' you are not turning the wheel, just reversing. I think you can therefore eliminate the column/steering wheel surrounds area.
I would also consider to hotlurve's point on the diff as one area, then also the front suspension, bushes, track rod ends, anti roll bar, wheel nuts, tyre pressures, etc. etc. for a loose or worn bush.
Have someone outside the car try to locate it as inside it's difficult inside

One question I have is when reversing - are you going over a changing road surface or a dropped kerb, even a 10mm amount? It's quite a common fault in reverse at low speed on certain suspension set ups to make this noise and is not a fault per se, just the sport suspension set of camber up that cause it. Very common on BMW's such as the gen 1 Z4, typically at low speed right hand reverse turn.

As jeeper says, check the simple/easy things first.
I had a vibration when turning left, slightly different to you - but having spent loads of time and money on suspension, tracking etc, it turned out to be a badly moulded front tyre.
Start with wheels, tyres, then move to suspension, tracking etc. hopefully not the dreaded diff!!

I had a very similar sounding knock which ended up being lower control arm bush worn and had both replaced under extended warranty.

yes, sure because I feel a minimal vibration on the steering wheel at the same time as the noise

Possible that the cause is bushes, track rod ends, anti roll bar, wheel nuts, for a loose or worn bush. tire pressures is ok. diff i hope no…
i’ll try this week end with my friend oustide if locate noise

I tried again the car made the noise even going forward. it happened to me after I brake, I stop, then I go ahead turning hard right. I heard the noise on a flat road.

I recently changed the tyres, they are new and he did it with the previous tyres.

possible is also my case, or some way to check even by lifting the car with the crick?

I went to my trusted mechanic and we inspected the front of the car. All silent blocks are fine and there are no strange games. Turning the steering shaft by hand instead (circled in red) it seems that the noise I hear is heard very slightly. Has anyone had any similar problems? Do you know of any steering box recalls?

I haven't solved my problem yet. The dealer wants me to give him the car because he thinks it's the steering gear box. It seems very strange to me...the car has 30,000 km.
I've been on the track and made some videos where you can hear the "click" noise I hear when I turn the steering wheel. I have the problem when I turn the steering wheel about 90 degrees, both at low and high speed. When I'm stationary, if I turn the steering wheel I don't hear the noise.

although the noise seems to come from inside the car, I believe it comes from outside. Lately I've heard the noise even when hitting a bump with the steering straight.

Can anyone help me?anyone know if is there a tsb?

thanks

im not sure if i would have tracked a car with a suspected steering issue to be fair ! doesnt help i know but just an opinion

Hi, i have latest updates following some tests with my friend: I know that the noise comes from the front left part of the car and in particular from the top part.
When hear the noise, if I put it in reverse and I go a few meters back and hear the noise again, if I put it in first gear and go forward I hear the noise again and so on.
If I put my hand near the shock absorber, on the top where there is the cross symbol on the chassi, when I hear the noise I feel a vibration under my hand. believing it was a problem with the left shock absorber, I swapped the shock absorbers but the noise always comes from the left.
Before I realized that the noise was coming from the top, I thought it was to the stabilizer bar and I changed the left stabilizer bar link but no is this the problem.
If anyone can help me and knows a TSB for this defect it would be very helpful

Thanks

Seventh post in, remarks on tyre slip when traversing across camber and changing surfaces.

Is your “noise” not associated the with steering geometry?
It seems unusual that you’ve had the ‘issue’ since December 2022 without it getting worse??

No friend, is not tyre slip when traversing across camber and changing surfaces.
I don't think that “noise” is associated with steering geometry. If it were associated with the suspension geometry everyone would have it but instead it seems like only I have it.
From December 2022 to today the noise has the same intensity but is much more frequent.

I get the noise when moving at low speed, whether I'm going forward or backward. It also did the noise when I went on the track at a higher speed.

I forgot to mention that in the meantime I also changed the brake pads but nothing has changed.
Jaguar dealer couldn't tell me what the problem was and they told me that they assume I'm leaving the car with them... but I don't trust them...

I had a BMW that made ticking / cracking noises when turning, turned it out was the strut brace bolts under the bonnet being loose. Worth torquing those up to be sure.
