Steering wheel change

Hi All,
Got my hands on a flat bottom steering wheel which I’d like to fit. Now for the questions;

Current wheel isn’t heated, flat bottom is - I know the heating function won’t work but will I be able to keep the flat bottoms buttons or will I need to transfer wiring loom and buttons from current wheel into flat bottom wheel?

Any how to info on removing current wheel?

I know I’d need to disconnect the battery before starting, assuming this is the one under the bonnet only? (My car has the secondary battery in the boot as well)

Any technical issues with disconnecting the battery? Will I lose anything when I connect back up?

Thanks in advance!

Morning,

I'm in the same situation as you. New wheels is heated, old isn't, but from what I understand it won't matter.

There are two PDF documents on this thread to explain how to remove the steering wheel. I've changed a few BMW\Honda steering wheels myself, but unfortunately you need a few specialist tools for the Jag and doesn't even look like you can buy them on ebay etc.

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/f-type-x152-72/help-steering-wheel-removal-196172/

Also some good guidance here which I posted on - https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/f-type-x152-72/flat-bottom-steering-wheel-226602/

Let me know how you get on pls.

Thanks, I viewed that link on my phone last night but missed the embedded PDF's

Also found this link which has some good info in it;

I've been told that if you use the heated wheels wiring loom (and your current wheel doesn't have the heated option) then the buttons don't work, so might need to transfer original wheels loom over to new wheel - only a 5 min job so not a big issue. But I am keen on trying to keep the new wheels buttons as they are in better condition than my original ones

As for airbag removal tool, it can be done with a small flat head screwdriver apparently

Can anyone confirm the battery disconnect etc?
Thanks

Oh really, I was advised it's plug and play....

There's a second tool you need.

Not looked at the battery issue yet, sorry.

Wheels are plug and play whether heated or non heated (same fitment onto column), its the wiring looms that differ - really easy to transfer your current wiring loom over, id like to hopefully keep the new buttons though with my old wiring loom

Ill look into battery disconnect more and let you know if I find anything

You have a battery under the bonnet? I thought both batteries were in the boot, main one on left hand side. There isn't room under my bonnet for a battery!

New steering wheel on, horn, paddles and cruise\limiter controls working, but audio button aren't

Any ideas? Not sure if i need to transfer my old one over, but they're an older design and worn and my cruise doesn't work on the old wheel very well, so would have mismatched buttons.

One assumes the volume buttons dont work, I know this spec of buttons are suspect on the Evoque too (seems to have a startup timing issue with temperature), it maybe because of the different spec (voice button) can you try patching in your old buttons to see if they work, is there a module or loom the buttons connect to in the wheel that you could swap? In the Evoque the problem is sometimes down to an earthing issue in the slip ring and needing a new spec of slip ring although that's usually related to the heated wheel.

If the old ones work could you dismantle enough to swap the button tops!?

Morning,

The buttons I transferred to my new wheel were from a 2018 car which was written off, so should be ok.

But yes, I'll try and connect my old buttons and see if they work after checking the connection on the new buttons. Looks like this can be done without removing the airbag.

I also used the new harness off the 2018 wheel, so may need to remove the air bag and swap over the harnesses.

Anyone know what happens if you start the car without the airbag attached until I get this working. Will the error code clear itself once connected again?

The final part I transferred was this plastic round part from the old wheel to the new wheel. Perhaps I need the new part.

Don't see how the plastic part would effect the electronics, where do the connections pass through to the wheel in rotation?, in theory if you use all the same wires and modules it should work as before. Take a detailed look at each and compare each component for differences.

No I wouldn't think so either.

I'll check the connections again tonight, hopefully just something isn't seated correctly.

Going to be time consuming if I have to disconnect\reconnect the airbag each time.

DONT start the car without airbag connected - youll get an error code & light and needs to be coded out by a dealer
The issue will be the new buttons, unfortunately you need to keep your original buttons, easy to switch over, use a plastic trim tool and pry between plastic & leather, held together with 6 rubber screws (?) that just push in and grip

Ive got 3 different steering wheels and have changed parts between all of them, paddles / carbon paddles / different button styles etc

question - how did you disconnect the airbag originally? I got half way - battery disconnect, wheel at 45 degrees, used a flat head screwdriver for the 12 oclock airbag clip but then couldnt get access to the 6 oclock clip because steering column was in the way, do you have any tips?

Thanks for that.

Have you tried the new buttons on your car and same problem? Car will be going in for a service as soon as lockdown is over, so error code isn't too much of a worry. I'll have a play anyway and decide. The cruise buttons don't work on my old steering wheel, but appear to be on the new one, so I could transfer the audio controls over from the old wheel to fix my current issue, although new buttons look and feel better.

So I put wheel at 45 degrees like you did, unclipped the airbag at one side, then rotated 180 degrees, disconnected the battery, waited 10 mins then proceeded to unclip the other side and remove the airbag.

Not tried newer buttons but that seems to be the issue on all other threads about steering wheel changes - few on the US site as well

I was always a bit nervous to start poking around with the airbag clips with battery still connected but agree you get around the wheel lock issue when disconnecting battery. I’ll give it a go tomorrow afternoon, thanks for the tip

Morning.

After lot of troubleshooting I have it working. Didn't matter which harness I used or that circular plastic piece. In the end, I swapped out the circuit board for the audio controls (old one at the top right) into the new buttons (bottom left). So now I have the nicer feeling\looking buttons but with the old circuit board inside so it's fully compatible and working. :D :D

Let me know if you get stuck today, but it's a pretty easy job really. Make sure you have a 21mm socket if removing the wheel. You can see quite a few differences in the boards...

New steering wheel really lifts the cabin.

Nicely done, boards totally different, good to see it all comes apart.

Intrigued by the brass captive nut and pillar, not present on the lower backplate.

Still non the wiser if the circuit board from the 2018 car had failed or just not compatible, I'd imagine the latter.

Yeah it's very strange. It's not present on the cruise control side on the new or old one. Doesn't connect to anything, perhaps a generic part for other models.

Sorry to bring this thread up again, but I'm really keen to swap the standard wheel on my 2019 R for a flat bottom wheel. My current wheel is heated and has the voice control button on the left hand side buttons.
There are flat bottom wheels available on ebay, but none of them seem to have the voice control button.
My question is whether its just the case that I can buy any old flat bottom heated wheel and then swap the switches over from my exisitng wheel?
