Speeding through the Village - Not me

We have had a leaflet though the door (and speed stickers for the bin) about a village meeting to 'reduce speeding' and the best ways to do this. It's very nice to have this type of consideration rather than me waking up to a speed camera on the lawn. I can't say we have a problem with speed, yes there is the occasional person with a slightly heavy foot, but no-one has been injured or even bumped - I'm not saying we need to wait until then though.

We have one side of the village with a 40 mph signage and the other with a 30 mph. I like to keep my fellow villagers happy and put the car into cruise control through the village to ensure I don't upset anyone. I even pull over and switch off the engine to let horses go by.

However, this lead me onto thinking about the best method of slowing people down which does not involve putting the Police on every corner.

What works for you ?

Lots of signage, including warning signs that say children crossing as it makes people think about the impact of speeding. The digital signs that flash up your speed. Not the happy/sad face ones. They're a waste of time. The ones that show your speed are much better as everyone can see your speed.

Then chicanes that force one direction of traffic to give way to the other. Much better than speed bumps in my opinion.

Thanks Dezzy.

With so much farm machinery being moved around, the chicanes may not be right for this area, but I agree with the approach and the flash up speed signs are very good. The council can't be that bothered as some of the speed signs are covered over by hedgerow.

I did hear one person start taking about stopping 'rat runs', but that causes more traffic on other roads that are already under pressure and to be honest, the traffic in the village is light outside of school hours. One man's rat run is another man's way to work.

It's a difficult one, we get people doing 40-45 mph on the B roads when the limit is 60. They get to a village and continue doing the same speed. It's about education really.
Steve.

I agree with you Steve, its about education. Everyone thinks that people who speed through villagers are maniacs yet put those same people in someone else's village and they will likely speed the same.

The government are on a great program to catch people who speed at 35mph+ in a bid to re-educate. The new laws and better tech are bringing the limits down to nearer 33mph before a prosecution is raised.

The F-Type has a brilliant bit of tech called Automatic Speed Limiters which stops the growler from over-achieving, it would be great to have these fitted in all cars as standard.

In terms of what works, I quite like the happy sad face, especially when the kids are with me. It gives me something to aim for.

Should I copy and paste this in the other thread that is currently running "Radar/Speed Camera detectors...any good?" ;)
