Speaker sizes…

Hi all

I know this has been done to death BUT I’m struggling to find exact speaker sizes. I have trowled through YouTube/safari/forums/socials and am aware that there is lots of talk about this but…

I cannot find the quantity’s and sizes of speakers I need to replace from my 770w meridian AND is it worth installing an aftermarket amp?

If you could kindly help, I’d be very appreciative.

Three in each door, tweeter, 100mm mid and 200mm bass, then there's a pair behind each seat, that's for the meridian, the meridian surround option adds a coaxial speaker in the centre of the dash.

Ah. So there’s an exact replicate version behind the seat? I’m surprised they’d put a tweeter there.

Is there room to increase speaker depth?

Hi D9LLT. firstly here's a summary table of the F-Type speaker sizes, engineering and JLR part numbers that I compiled as part of the upgrade I carried out on my Meridian 380W system. Basically plug and play swap out of standard paper cone speakers, to the much more responsive kevlar coned Meridian Signature series fitted to high end XJ and LR models.
F-Type speakers.jpg

As you might detect, the rear 'woofer and tweeter' are not standard sizes. In fact there is nothing else in the JLR speaker inventory that can be used to upgrade the standard set up which looks like this -->
F-Type rear speakers.jpg

The rear tweeter is too big to be a 'proper' tweeter and the rear woofer is too small to be a 'proper' woofer, so they just do their best to fill in the sound from behind the seats, but don't add much to the staging as they are usually pointing straight at a seat back some 3 inches in front! In addition, replacing the rear speakers is complicated by the fact that the rear woofer is a 'twin coil' affair and is driven by two individual inputs from the 380W amp. There are very little replacement options to replace unless you ditch the factory amp and go for a new standalone. Altough this then throws up the issue of where to pick up a clean low level input for the new amp. The rear speaker combo comes as a fully moulded integrated unit, which entails either gutting the standard speakers or building a custom cabinet.
F-Type rear speakers2.jpg

There's not much space to play with in terms of building a decent custom enclosure -->
F-Type rear speaker space.jpg

and the space that is available is shallow and irregular in shape. Some owners have succeeded, but with a lot of ply, fiberglass, time and effort.

Finally, as you have the 770W Meridian Surround, you also have a 100mm co-axial mounted in the centre vent, but this can be upgraded using a Meridian Signature speaker.

There are a couple of good threads worth looking at over on the Jaguar Forums -->

Personally, I went for the Meridian Signature plug and play upgrades for the doors (Kevlar cones, titanium tweeter) and the very rare Audison/Bold combo for the rear using second hand speaker frames. I didn't fancy the expense/effort of rewiring the car to mount aftermarket amplifier(s). No centre co-axial in my case (although the car does have a 100mm centre speaker, which is used by the Telematics system in case of accident). With a three layer sound proof application on each door the difference in sound quality after the changes was markedly improved with a much sharper and cleaner mid-range and a tight base underpining everything. For me it was the best price/performance combination, but then again I've been riding motorbikes most of my life, so my ability to appreciate high quality audio, is probably not the best :)

If you haven't already, start by sound proofing the doors properly. That in itself makes quite a difference to the sound quality you get out of the speakers.

I'm very happy with the improvement it brought with my 380W system and toyed with the idea of replacing the speakers too but wonder how much more it would actually bring considering that it isn't the quietest car cabin, especially at speed.

Since you already have the 770W speakers, replacing the speakers perhaps wouldn't add that much value.

Thanks Tom

I’ve already got all the equipment to soundproof it all.

I’ll be replacing the 770w so if you’re interested, the speakers will be for sale.

Nice! Good luck with the soundproofing.

What are you going to replace the speakers with?

Can't see it in your signature but I guess you're in the UK and not down here on the continent. Otherwise I might have been interested.

Quote "Since you already have the 770W speakers, replacing the speakers perhaps wouldn't add that much value". There is absolutely no difference between the speakers fitted to the base, Meridian (380W) and Meridian Surround (770W), only the quantity of speakers and amplifier power plus a bit of DSP on the Meridian Surround. The standard speakers all use basic paper cones (not the door tweeter) and are not really well regarded in terms of the quality of sound they produce. Although I'm no audiophile, I can definitey vouch for the 'plug and play ' Jaguar OEM 'Meridian Signature' upgrade speakers with Kevlar cones, the difference in sound quality is clearly audible, especially the base frequencies. The big bonus for me was the simplicity of the upgrade with no need to consider speaker adapter rings or wiring adapters.

Genp729, what a fantastic and informative post, thank you!

I might see if you're up for a beer sometime, I'd love to quiz you on how easy it is to get that whole rear assembly out in order to replace and sound proof the rears.

Is there any value in replacing just the centre speaker at the front with the kevlar version? I know this speaker is really easy to get to. I have the Meridian surround option.

Cheers

@Jimmyrn85, if you're ever travelling along the M4 past Junc 15/16 let me know, as I never say no to the offer of a beer :) You can work on the rear speakers without removing the seats, although only if you are 5'6" like me. Rear bulkhead panels/speaker covers are a bit fiddly, but you can get them out without having to remove the parcel shelf. I fully photographed the full upgrade, but lappy they were stored on died and I've yet to recover the data. In order of bang for buck/effort, I would suggest tackling audio upgrade path as follows:

1. 3 layer soundproof on doors. Outer door skin, rear of inner door panel, rear of door card. I used DoDo mat, but of course there are many others to choose from.
2. Upgrade to Kevlar Meridian Signature speakers for the 100mm mid and 200mm woofer in door. Tweeter only if you are keen on sharp vocals or the classics. Having carried out 1+ 2, move the staging forward to reduce the input from the stock rear speakers, as they will distract from the tighter audio being delivered from the doors. I'm not familiar with the DSP settings of the 'Meridian Surround' 770W system, but if you generally listen to your music in 'surround' mode rather than Dolby Stereo, I'd say go ahead and fit the Kevlar upgrade centre speaker. On it's own, it's not going to make that much of a difference as it's only a 100mm mid with co-axial tweeter.

The Meridian Signature speakers come up on Ebay every now and then, although the 200mm woofers not so often. Alternatively the Kevlar upgrade speakers can be purchased new for reasonable price from the likes of Britcar.

3. If you want to have better quality input from the rears, you can keep the standard amp and go for the Audison and Bold combination using second hand speaker frames (or gut your own frames if you decide there's no going back). You'll have to do some soldering to match up the twin coil input for the Bold to the Jaguar connections and use some adapter rings to fit the new speakers into the frames, but apart from that it's plug and play as the speaker resistances will match what the Jaguar amplifier is expecting at the end of the wire. I could only source the Bold from Germany as it's not available for sale in UK.

Next level up from 1 - 3 would be full audio overhaul. Signal processor to capture OEM head unit output, new amplifier(s), speakers, custom cabinet, boot mounted sub, basically whatever your budget will stretch to. For me 1 - 3 produced a definite improvement, certainly on par with the Harmon Kardon in my Beemer and was an enjoyable exercise that I could undertake without needing much in the way of car audio knowledge. The F-Type is never going to be the best environment for listening to music, but for a reasonable sum and a little effort, it can certainly be improved.

Thanks mate, I definitely will.

Searching on Britcar for C2D24861 picks up the door bass speaker - Is this actually an upgrade? Doesn't look like kevlar looks pretty bad?

@Jimmyrn85 - now that normal service has been resumed on the Forum, I can reassure you that despite appearances, C2D24861 is indeed the correct upgrade for the original paper coned 200mm door bass speakers. You are going from this --> 18139907.jpeg
to this --> 234867197.jpg
If you have any difficulties sourcing a pair of door bass speakers, try searching Ebay for 'XJ Sub Parcel Shelf' AW93-04692-BC, which houses two C2D24861, it looks like -->

XJ Sub parcel shelf.jpg

If you have any difficulties sourcing a pair of 100mm door mids, try searching Ebay for AW93-18808-BC (C2D2076). These are the yellow Kevlar coned Bowers & Wilkins equivalent of the black Kevlar coned Meridian Signature. They are exactly the same speakers (made by Panasonic for JLR) apart from cone colour.

To further aid you in carrying out the upgrade, original door speaker upgrade YouTube video by F-Type forum member --> www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZecRBquBTtw&t=2s

and more recent video documenting the same upgrade, although note the individual has incorrectly fitted the co-axial centre speaker (AW93-18808-EC) as replacement for the door mids, which should be a single 100mm (C2D24862 or C2D2076). --> www.youtube.com/watch?v=wnucx6vXNW8

Good luck!

I may be late to the party, but I went down a similar route.

Sound proofed the hell out of everything and fitted the following:
Tweeter: CPLA-18808-HA
Mid: AW93-18808-BC
Woofer: Audison AP8 (with adapter)

The mids can also be found under their Panasonic reference number: EAS10PM654A.

The photos (if they load) show the window slider covered - this was for the photo as I went a little OTT on the deadening material application & thought why not.

I'm toying with the idea I can model and 3D print something for the rear speakers...

How does that AP8 behave, rattle the hell out of the doors? Get enough power from the standard amp? Where did you get adapter from?

It behaves incredibly well, doesn't rattle the doors and gets sufficient power from the standard amp to enable me to hear the music loudly with the roof down driving the beast. No issues from me!

The adapter can be purchased from CEN Automotive in Nottingham and they ship. Calling CEN (01159 240666) will be quicker than trying to find the adapter on their website!

Genp729, THANK YOU for providing the useful table

D9LLT - please let me know if you have the new old speakers available - I'd be happy to negotiate!

Cheers
