SIM and Connectivity

A wet and windy Sunday is perfect for one thing and one thing only - faffing about doing those small jobs you've been putting off.

One of these, is investigating the SIM card in my 'new to me' MY2019 F-Type

When I got it, there was a SIM card in there but it didn't appear to connect anymore. Certainly I've never had any connectivity out of it.

So, I know there are a few threads on here already but having read through I can't quite find the answer I'm looking for. Which is to the question - what does the SIM card actually get me if it's providing the expected connectivity?

For example, would it allow for wireless Android Auto or will I still be needing my cable for that?

Before I go off and get a new SIM, I'm just trying to work out if it's worth it!

Putting in a SIM gives you connectivity for the MMI online services (weather, news, parking, fuel prices, live flight times, online traffic, WiFi hotspot, etc)

I use Smarty which is good value; the smallest data (2GB per month) is more than adequate and you can easily do an add-on if you need more data for WiFi hotspot usage.

Still need to plug your phone in with a wired connection for Apple CarPlay / Android Auto

You could get a wireless CarPlay dongle if you particularly want wireless connectivity for that.

Just another thought for you on this, when I set up all of my connectivity when my F-Type was new to me a year ago, one previous owner, I had to do a ‘hard reset’ of the MMI and the connectivity system before it all worked correctly including the inControl app, etc. You may also need to resubscribe to the “remote” and “secure tracker” options if those have expired. It is also worth looking through the connectivity settings to make sure that you have all of the functionality turned on. I can’t remember now exactly how to do the ‘hard reset’ of the system, but Jag Customer Support walked me through it over the phone (it was something like pressing and holding the 🔧 button in the overhead console for 10 seconds, or something like that) - I found Jag Customer Support really helpful to get everything working correctly.

Yeah, the left button in the overhead console - when you press and hold it starts flashing. You have to continue to hold until it flashes more slowly, then you're done - takes about 15 seconds. The right button gets you the emergency services, so leave well alone!

Thought it was that, but couldn’t remember for certain and didn’t want to say the wrong thing. Thanks for clarifying for our fellow new F-Type enthusiast SCM. 👍🏻

Rather than buying a monthly plan I have found it cheaper just to buy a one off pay as you go sim - think I paid about £30 for 2 years 24GB from Three mobile. Though I guess it depends on how much data you use, I still have lots of data left and the 2 years is nearly up so will have to look again, but the car is not my daily driver so if it is maybe a plan is better.

I got one of these.

Well worth putting the SIM from a phone in first and checking it does everything you want first.
