Roof drains

I've searched but can't find anything about clearing them on here. Can anyone enlighten me on how it's done. Mine seem to be draining OK but would just like to try some preventative maintenance

On mine the front drains down the windscreen into 3 pockets in the scuttle under the wipers. I cleaned the outer ones at the weekend by lifting the bonnet and removing a plastic cover on each side held in with 3 simple plastic twist locks. This gives you good access to remove dirt and debris and a small wire or screw driver can be used to clean the circle of drain holes in the scuttle.
The rear drains into the boot channel at either side under the spoiler, saving that cleaning for next weekend, got to have something to look forward too during lockdown.

Hey XZ4
Guessing by the forum name that you still live with the nightmare of the Z4 design of having the roof hydraulic pump motor built into the roof drain, with the inevitable results that you'd expect...

Simplest way to find them and do some cleaning is to pop the bonnet and boot.

Grab a 2l fizzy pop bottle and fill it with tap water.
Remove the two plastic covers just below the LH side and RH windscreen that shroud the Brake master cylinder and ECU/Cabin air filter. You may find some debris in these areas.
Gently trickle the water down the screen and see where it disappears, and see if it runs clear with no muck.

Same on the rear end. Depending on what version you have dictates where the drains are, but generally you can see the drain holes in the plastic moundings.
Again, pour some water down until it runs clear.

And whilst under the bonnet pull the cabin air filter and get rid of all the flies!
Something like a lollipop stick works well and you’d be amazed at the crud that comes out half way between filter changes.

I had an E89 so no issues like the roof drain problems on the E85.
