Roof box - any recommendations?

Hey all

I'm planning on getting an F-type coupe some point in the future.

The only thing is I'd like some additional storage options for let's say a 14 day road trip in Europe. Anyone have any pictures + recommendations?
Ps boot will be occupied by the dogs.

A camper van may be more appropriate?

What sort of dogs?

My cocker spaniel is quite happy in the footwell with my wife sat in the passenger side. But 2? Might be a squeeze.

dogs only small - they can fit in boot. so really comes down to storing luggage in roof box really, just curious to see if anyone else bought a roof job specifically for f-type.
fyi the whole point is taking the f-type on great driving roads - not looking for the suitability of the vehicle for the task at hand.

Whilst I appreciate that an F Pace is probably more suited, I say go in an F Type. You only live once. Pack light, drive the beautiful car and take pictures to enhance your memories.

You can “tour” in anything. It comes down to your willingness to compromise. I’d happily compromise on luggage for the excitement, drama and beauty of the F Type!

They have to be secured and not interfere with the driver. My dog wears a harness that is anchored to the door handle or seatbelt (if it’s just us).

Not sure this thread is really very helpful.
OP has asked for storage options and restated his request for this and not car suitability or any other advice.

That said I think options are limited as with no roof gutter the ladder/rack systems won’t fit and as it cannot have a tow bar as it was never approved then neither trailer nor bike rack luggage solutions can be considered. You might want to look at suction based roof boxes as an option or even vacuum storage bags to reduce volume of any clothing packed..

Suction cup roof bars could be a solution, worked on Shmees SF90

Leave dogs with friends? The boot in the coupe is easily big enough for 2 weeks
Good suggestion with the dogs although I can understand some don't like to do this.

I was very surprised with the spaciousness of the Coupe boot and how much I can fit into it. Certainly enough for a 14 day road trip.

The Coupe roof is not engineered to support the weight and stress of a hard roof box and its contents. There are some soft options available but they don’t look up to much to me.

The OP doesn't own an F-Type yet so needs to take everything into consideration beforehand!

Team Sky built some bespoke bike racks which mounted in place of the tailgate, and this is the only instance I can think of of someone coming up with an external storage solution for the F-Type. They almost blank out the rear window, so your dogs would be deprived of a view, if you went down that route. We have a spare tailgate in the workshop so I might have a play with it and see what ideas come to mind. You would need more powerful struts of course.

At risk of breaking the 'no other advice' rule, I wonder whether the OP has considered an F-Pace SVR? They are simply stunning, and nothing like the compromise you might be expecting. Prices are incredibly sensible too; £40K is more than enough for a really good, low-mileage example. We have a Discovery 4, and have split the boot in half using the LR dog guard kit, and then added a shelf at bottom-of-window height, meaning we effectively have a Volvo boot-sized space on one side, and 72Kg of happy dogs the other side (a Spaniel and a Labrador/Rottweiler cross). You could do something similar with the F-Pace?

My border collie fits in the boot at a squeeze and is fine for day trips in there. He'd rather be on the passenger seat though. He happily rides in the back seat, harnessed of course, of my XFS for long road trips. He had tried to get in the front of the F Type before my partner in that shot but was returned to the boot.

As per my earlier post, the F-Type Coupe roof is not engineered to support the weight and stress of a hard roof box and its contents. That is the information I've seen and I believe to be correct as JLR never intended it on this Luxury Sports Car. They didn’t provide the facility for roof bars probably because it would also spoil the car’s aesthetics (see screenshot below).

However, others have mentioned the suction method for attaching a roof box. The SeaSucker Monkey Bars roof rack system shown in the YouTube video posted earlier seemed to be successful on the Ferrari SF90? I haven't seen or heard of this being tried and tested on an F-Type Coupe so it's up to the OP to decide?

https://seasucker.eu/products/monkey-bars-2020-edition

Taken from the FAQ's section...

"We don’t recommend using our products on wrapped vehicles. Our testing shows that our vacuum cups will pull a bubble in the wrap when attached, which screws up the wrap and is not a safe attachment point for a SeaSucker. To make it work, some people have removed the wrap just where the vacuum mounts will sit on their vehicle.. However, you are absolutely able to use a SeaSucker rack on a ceramic coated car."

Furthermore, if you attach a roof box onto your car it can invalidate your insurance unless you declare it, due to it being a risk.

On a separate note and in regard to the previous post by member Willieo, I've never seen pics of a Border Collie in an F-Type before! :) He seems to have made himself very comfortable there. Hopefully he doesn't try cleaning the inside of the tailgate glass with his tongue or nose!
