Recharging a flat battery using the Ctek mxs 5.0

I have a MY20 convertible and my electrical distribution looks different to all the others I’ve seen. The bus bar most people are connecting to on the distribution box for most is on the floor of the boot Mine might be on the back wall of the boot with another electrical distribution box in front of it which I cannot move far enough forward because of cable lengths. I’ve attached 3 pictures with a yellow arrow pointing to the front of the car, can anyone confirm that I am trying to get to the right distribution box before I remove everything? Thanks.

I think the box I need is behind the distribution box with several yellow connectors at the bottom in the pics. Any idea how to get it out of the way safely?

Looking at the bottom photo you supplied, if the power distribution block is where you think it is (behind the box with several yellow connectors), there's only a few screws holding that on so can't you just remove them to get behind it?

Alternatively, the large plastic moulding above it (with the luminous green emergency boot release handle embedded in it) is quite easy to remove....I've taken mine off a couple of times. Once partially removed you may be able to look down at where you think the block is?

Thanks, when I undid the bolts holding the frame with the front elec box on it didn’t have enough clearance to pull forward. I tried several different attempts but without success.

I have now buried my head in it and taken the front elec box off the support frame first and then taken the frame off which then came out thankfully. Then it was easy to get the distribution box which is indeed behind it but with far fewer connections than other photos I have seen. Easy to bolt the cable to the bus bar and the return to the chassis when I got in. Needed long sockets though, 8, 10 and 13mm. Ctek connector sits just beneath the battery access panel so hidden when not in use and a couple of seconds to get out. Happy with the result at last.

Glad you've got it sorted!

I also keep the CTEK plug-in connector (Comfort Indicator) just beneath the battery access panel........out of sight and easy to get at!

Happy to help if I can, if you message me with any specific questions I’ll do my best! If you have a secure tracker subscription don’t forget to put the car in maintenance mode first, before you disconnect the battery!

If you look at the photos I posted earlier in this thread this will help. Remove the boot liner and looking inside the boot to the left of centre on the back wall (nearest you) you will see an electronic box.

ECM in front of busbar.JPG

Take of the 3 screws holding this box on and lay it on the boot floor, you don't need to disconnect any of the connections.
ECM unbolted.JPG

You will now see the mounting frame for the electronic box, take off the nuts holding it in place and it can be removed, although a little fiddly as it only seems to come out one way.

Behind that mounting frame is the busbar, behind a clip on plastic cover. Take the cover off and you'll see the busbar with several empty holes. The positive cable for your charger can be bolted to any of the spare holes with a small nut, bolt and washer, I used a small nylock nut so it won't vibrate loose. Between the busbar and the car battery you will see a large earth lead bolted to the rear wall, I used that for the return. I then put the cteq connector just below the battery access cover so you can't normally see it, but when you need it it is just a case of lifting the small battery access cover and connecting up, also meant I didn't have to drill any holes or damage the car in any way, all removable.

Edit, don’t forget to disconnect the battery whilst doing this and it’s a good idea to put an inline fuse on the positive side, close to the busbar, the one I used was small enough to be tucked inside the busbar cover. You will need to reset the windows after reconnecting the battery at the end.

thanks..im gonna try this this weekend ....did you just attach ground to the ground to the ground in the last picture?

Yes, the eyelet on the cable wasn’t big enough though so I cut it off and crimped on a larger one. Good luck, it’s not difficult but a little fiddly.

THANKS...

im new to the jaguar life :)

what do you mean reset the windows?

Just look in the iguide, it tells you how to do it. Every time you disconnect the battery the one touch windows won’t work properly until they are reset, it’s something like all the way up then all the way down then press and hold down 5 times but check the guide. Easy to do. You might find some other settings are lost but for me that was all that needed doing.

The battery on my MY16 Coupe is completely flat and I have to open the driver’s door using the emergency key. This means I can open the bonnet and get to the charging points but cannot open the boot to get at the battery.
Does anyone know if it is possible (or advisable) to recharge a flat battery from the charging points using a Ctek mxs 5.0. The Ctek manual shows the charger being connected directly to the battery.
My thinking is it would be better to recharge the battery properly rather than try and jump start the car and then leave it running or go for a long drive ( not recommended at the moment).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Regards

I had a similar experience a few months ago, mainly due to lack of use during the winter and pandemic restrictions.

After purchasing some HD jump leads and a CTEK MX5 conditioner, I started the car using the recommended jump start connection points under the bonnet and then connected the CTEK using the recommended connection points in the boot and left it charging/conditioning

After a few days I had a fully charged battery and have had no probs since.

sorry to bother...I'm not seeing the ground...can u show me in a pic exactly where it is...?

thanks

I didn’t take any pictures of it when I did mine but any ground will work. There are several studs attached to the body of the car and they should all work, if you have a multimeter you can check with that.

On the main screen touch the gears on the bottom r/h corner of the first screen, that’ll bring up another screen with System at the top, touch that and it’ll go onto another screen with time and date, touch that and it’ll allow you to change either the time or the date.

Hope that helps.
