Rear brace removal - supporting vehicle

Hi anyone,

I will be removing the rear braces from my 2017MY V6s Coupe for shot blasting and rust proofing with POR-15 etc in the coming weeks.
In terms of lifting and supporting the vehicle for this, a full blown drive on ramp would be best…but I have no access to one.

Obviously I cannot place axle stands under the cross brace as that would hinder its removal somewhat !
Is there anywhere else I can support the rear on axle stands OR just lift onto ramps and support by the wheels…perhaps with a scaffold plank under the ramp to give a bit more clearance.

One other question as I have not crawled under the car too much yet to look……the workshop manual states that the subframe bolts are placed finger tight first THEN offer up the cross brace…..this would mean that the brace MUST fit over those two subframe bolt heads……OR are the two subframe bolts fitted through the cross brace first then tightened to the relevant Nm…..this being the case it contradicts the work shop manual?

Oh the joy of my Land Rover Series 3 that I can just crawl under with no lifting!

Thanks all for any response

If you look on the underside of the sills (front and rear ends) you’ll see an arrow shape which indicates the jacking points.

I’ve also attached some TOPIx information which may help with your enquiry.....

Did you do this ? Had mine on the ramps today to check the exhaust valves - shocked by the state of the cross braces , cars 2015 and done 24k but looks awful.
Question is ( no laughing) I’m assuming I can remove whilst on ramps - don’t need to take the weight with a jack ?
Also, slight misting of oil around diff which was settling on top of cross brace.
Bit annoyed as it was in Jag 2 weeks ago for MOT and health check - no mention of this.

Hi Philb280..

Apologies as not been very busy so not replied to you…..answer is no I have not done yet….probably doing end of January….

Thanks

On the subject of rear cross braces……I do have another question if anyone has any thoughts?

We have moved into a new build earlier this year with a single garage and driveway between two houses (I had a huge double garage at last house so that would have been ideal)….
Anyway…..as I have to lift car to remove rear cross brace….ie the big one…..I got to thinking that if I am doing this in either a single garage (3x6m) or on the single driveway…..DO I HAVE CLEARANCE TO REMOVE THE CROSS BRACE ONCE DROPPED FROM CAR?

Ideally, if I still had my previous double garage, the main brace would simply slide out from the side of car between front/rear wheels….but I clearly do not have space to do that….as I have my own house and my neighbours on either side of driveway

So will the cross brace slide out the rear of car (with a bit of jiggery-pokery!) Given my limited space…

Alternatively……I have some 6mm steel plate. If I cut some say 5”x 4” square and place that between Jack and the jacking point where the cross brace would have bolted…that steel effectively becomes a steel support to Jack the car……
Then I can slide the cross brace out backwards under the rear wheels?

Thoughts ?

I do not want to remove the rear brace if I then cannot get the blooming thing out from under the car!!!

Thanks all….

After you’ve removed the exhaust etc and dropped the large K-Brace, you’ll be able to slide it out towards the rear of the car, under the wheels.

Here's some relevant info.....have a read through a few pages starting here https://www.ftypeforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?p=40366#p40366

Hi RPSN,

Thank you for this. It was probably a silly question to ask, but I’d look even sillier if I removed the brace then couldn’t get it out from under the car!
I’m doing this work around end January or early Feb as had car since Mid November but we are away in January for first short road trip to Brecons in Wales…..it would be really annoying if the shot blasters did not get the braces back for me to POR-15 etc in time for this short trip

Thanks for your reply…much appreciated
