Range/Land Rover Thefts

I see in the news that Land and Range Rover thefts in London and Manchester have reached epic levels with 90 cars being stolen every day! And insurance companies refusing cover.
Can our ftypes be stolen just as easily?
If I disable keyless entry does this help?
Ghost 11 engine immobiliser, which takes 3 hours to be fitted and I think costs £500? ~ is this the best answer?
 
I might be wrong but I would be surprised if they don't use the same easy to defeat systems as the rest of the JLR group.

Never say never... but I'd like to think you are fairllllyyyy safe down where you are.
The thing is, these guys are all about the easy jobs. If you make it juuuust difficult enough they usually won't bother, so most of the time a decent faraday box and good locks on your front door is enough. They come up to the car/house, try scanning a signal, and when they don't get one they'll just move on to the next.
 
I have no reason to believe the Jaguars are not just as vulnerable as the RR side, using the same software, modules and key fobs, however they are nothing like as popular to steal. Limited market overseas of parts or whole vehicles when compared to the RR's.
JLR is currently taking 2 types of RR including the Velar back to dealerships to beef up the security. Can't remember the exact model years but something like 2018 to 2021. I've had one based in London upgraded FOC.

Yes, switching off comfort access disables the scanning thefts, but not OBD port access. Faraday pouch is good, but won't help you at a service station when they scan your key as you walk off, unless of course you carry the pouch all the time too.
Ghost 2 though is without doubt the best solution. In essence the only way the car moves is on a trailer. Doesn't matter if they get the keys as it's going nowhere. For a £30k to £100k car the £600 is a small investment. I'm a strong supporter and have had several fitted.
 
Just watched a video on FaceTube and he contacted AutoWatch for some figures. Around 100,000 Ghost immobilisers have been fitted and they offer a refund if the car is stolen, and they’ve refunded 14 people

A well balanced and researched little video. Certainly justifies my trust in the Ghost 2 product.
The only point I'd push back on slightly is I don't think the value drop is purely because of the level of thefts. It'll compound it, but threads on here talk about values of other cars inc. F Types dropping significantly.

Yes, as a first line of defence yes. I specced our R not to have it.

Visual and physical deterrents are a nightmare for a T-Leaf. Crook-lock on the steering wheel, driveway post and/or lockable OBD port, all adds time and puts one off because of the hassle.
If you can't get into the OBD it's pretty much game over.

Better still, remove the OBD port and tap into Pins [hidden] and [hidden] fit a switch that is hidden.
The latter could be done in about an hour and cost around a fiver.

Ghosts may be the fad now, but be sure countermeasures will be (and most probably are) available and developed the more Ghost units are installed - T-Leafs are one step ahead, they have to be.

I cant help thinking that the increase of thefts is not just due to the desirability of the mark, of course adding the vulnerability of the existing security systems.
I could imagine that the lack of available parts may also be a factor.
Moving 90+ sizable vehicles a day through various ports even in containers, i would hope would flag something somewhere.
But chopping them up for used parts may also be a option.

Personally glad i do not have keyless, and yes i use a faraday pouch when travelling...
 
I remember speaking to someone very senior at NFUM who said the risk they put on a Range Rover per vehicle is 30k as they will be stolen it’s not if but when the car will be stolen. That’s lead to increased insurance costs for Landrover and a drive for them to sort the security out.

Surely if you don't have keyless entry, a Faraday pouch isn't necessary?

The key still transmits to be able to unlock and start the car.
 
Has anyone had there F-type security updated? Today I had my 2019 F-Pace updated (Jaguar sent me a letter saying a free update was due) but nothing for the F-type (yet)
 
I've updated mine months ago.

Had my 2019 F-Pace updated a couple of weeks ago. Dealership confirmed to me there was no recall applicable to my F-type but then again it doesn't have keyless entry.
