R or V6S Manual

Hey all

I've been toying with getting into an F-Type - thing is I love my manual cars (never owned a Auto before).

So a few questions:

Anyone owned both an R and V6S in Manual and whats your take on them both, or individually whats the most fun to drive, and also daily? It will be my daily.
Anything to be aware of in terms of maintenance costs differences between R and S Manual?

And any issues between the two models?

Or any other info I should know if I end up going for one or the other

Don't underestimate how good the auto is - mine seems to have ESP as it behaves as if it knows when I think it should be shifting. It adapts to your driving style - pootle around and it short shifts, floor it and it'll red line before upshifting. And you can use the paddles for a sort of manual experience, and the shifter can be used in S mode to up and down shift liek a sequential box.

I've driven both and they do seem to have different personalities, the V8 definitely feels heavier than the V6, and the extra fuel may swing your choice for a daily driver, but the V8 is remarkably frugal (ish!) for such a powerful engine - I managed 34mpg on a trip from Southampton to Heathrow airport. Of course, heavy right foot does see the fuel gauge going down as fast as rev counter goes up (not entirely true)!

Best advice is to try and drive both and see which best floats your metaphorical boat. And you get to enjoy all those test drives! Good luck and happy hunting!

yeh so speed isn't too much of a concern for me at the moment- especially how UK is at mo. I barely get to stretch my M2s legs and is significantly quicker than an F-Type S.
But it's painful waiting for the Manuals to come up for sale in S form. They seem to sell really quick if the spec is something neutral.

I might look into trying both and seeing how they feel. Thanks for the info @scm / @ gasgas

I’m generally a manual lover, for my 2nd car/fun car. Having had quite a few BMWs with the ZF paddle shift as daily’s I’d found I hardly ever used the paddles. I’d stick it in sport and that felt right. But I’d miss the tactility of a manual.

But I bought an auto V6S and drive it 80% of the time on the paddles in Dynamic & Sport. It’s extremely engaging. The auto is useful in stop start traffic or when I’m just cruising too.

I can’t really explain why, but the Auto really suits the F Type and provides just as much interaction as I’d want.

Definitely worth an extended test drive in an auto to see if it clicks for you.
Just make sure you put the car in Dynamic, push the gearshift left into sport then use the paddles to select gears.

Is your M2 auto or manual?

I was always a diehard manual fan. For the F-Type the automatic just works. I love starting my day just boating around in D and once all is warmed up and a small section of spirited drive is coming up, hammering it in manual - S mode and just using the paddles. Upshifts are so nice. My major dislike is that if you cruise in 6th gear, it will take forever to go to 2nd - downshifting several gears is quite annoying for me and takes some spontaneity from the F-Types characteristics. In these situations, it feels quite lazy.

All in all, I would assume the auto gearbox will feel quite similar to your M2, if it's auto.

For me, I'm busy enough with the F-Type - with the V8 I wouldn't want a manual. I don't think it would suit the character of the car, my V8 can feel quite fat occasionally. I'm not missing too much. The V6 might be a different story. Reviews stated that the manual is not necessarily great and a must-have.

There's a Vehicle Setting that allows you to have the paddles active in both D and S, or just S.

Yes I’ve enabled that, but it reverts to Auto if you don’t use them constantly. I’m convinced Sport also speeds up the changes.

Yeah, D needs the paddles to be used constantly or it reverts. And you're probably right that S has a different shift map than D.

@centaX - so yeh my M2 is a manual (rare but nowhere near as rare as V6S Manual F-type.

And same as you, a die hard Manual car guy - never owned an auto. For me if I do go auto it absolutely has to be the V8 - I just bring myself to own an auto that would be slower than my manual M2. Always felt at higher power outputs (400bhp plus) a manual might be a bit too OTT. I've driven a few supercars with autos and really enjoyed them, but I think that comes down having heaps of power.

I just dont think I'd go with with an S auto - and want that added tactility (regardless of performance).

Just a little concerned I guess with mpg on the R - I will literally be driving it everywhere.

If you can try an S and R auto. I enjoy the S on the road more, as the shorter gears mean I use more gears and more revs, making it feel more interesting.
Although the V8 is an absolute supercar.

Tim has chucked up a stunning V6s Manual this week https://www.sportsandtouring.co.uk/details/used-car-in-andover/jaguar/f-type/3.0-v6-s-euro-6-ss-2dr/1566616/
