On decision making doorstep for an F Type R... 65 or 18?? with a small concern..

Evening guys,

First post alert!

I have been searching far and wide for my dream R model and have arrived at two options..

1) 65 plate - £49,000, 19,500 miles

Pros: excellent spec, carbon wheels, carbon details, free service included, 1 mile down the road from me

Cons: one service missing from 2019. Although it only did 5k total miles from 2018 service until 2020 service - I assume this is when the original owner decided to sell due to lack of use

2) 18 plate - £52,500, 17,000 miles

Pros: cheaper monthly payments due to larger balloon, newer, full service history

Cons: not as good spec, black wheels and tinted windows which some have said is a bit boy 'racer-y', 75 miles drive from me...

Any advice on the huge decision would be really appreciated!!

Thank you all in advance

I'm a bit biased but also prefer the carbon blades over black wheels and the newer car looks too murdered out to me. Wheels can be changed and tints can be removed though.

Unless there's something really important like the pano roof missing from its spec I'd probably go for the newer car. It obviously has better headlights than the older one (if that matters to you) and being a later facelifted car will have a fair few improvements here and there like the seats and infotainment. The older car will also have the old interior plastics that get sticky, so be prepared for that if you go for the older one. The newer one might also have the newer version of the cooling system Y pipe which reduces the risk of the common coolant leak issues and associated costly repairs.

Good luck!

Thank you MajorTom that is very helpful!! they both have pano roof for the record!

Do you know if the 2018 has apple car play? or just a slightly updated infotainment? I seem to remember a technician friend of mine saying the newer infotainment has some issues ?? I might have mis-remembered that...

Can't help on any of the specific questions as I don't yet own one myself but, the one with the Carbon rims looks amazing!

Both nice looking cars. The older one looks to have heated seats not sure about the other - if that’s an issue ?
I bought a car from that Rybrook dealerships, good to deal with, I also travelled quite a distance and the car was as described so not a wasted journey.
The interior looks nicer to me on the older one.
For the age difference they look very close together on price and for that reason I might be swayed to the younger aged car.
Good luck with your decision.

Id definitely be going for the newer one. As others said, just keep an eye out for other wheels. People sell them on this forum from time to time aswell as ebay etc.
The 65 plate one seems a very high price in my opinion.

Welcome W2REN.

And congratulations on joining such a good forum :D

The older car in Santorini black with carbon wheels and trim looks to be very well spec'd. including Meridian Surround, full electric heated seats and powered tailgate.
The only things I can spot missing are heated front screen and steering wheel - the blurb states heated front screen but it definitely doesn't have this, so I would also check that everything else stated is actually there.
If you're buying a daily driver then the newer model makes more sense - otherwise I would be very tempted by the classic look of the original Ian Callum design - ones spec'd like this are starting to get few and far between now - especially like this with the uprated output engine and AWD.
If you get the registration number and ask nicely then I'm sure that member simpleR will be able to provide you with very useful background information to help you make your decision.
...and let's face it - it's a nice problem to have 8-)

And any thoughts on that missing service? Does it count as missing if only 5k miles done?
Yes, counts as missing as needs an annual service. It’s not just miles covered but oils, etc. age. Of course you can argue it’s done low mileage but come trade in/sale it will be used to knock down the price.

I’d have the older car, wheel look better I have them and love the look) original lines and more classy look to it.

It depends on if it has the 10" screen without buttons on the sides - then it has apple car play, or can be updated to have it if not already done. If it has the 8" version with physical buttons JLR's carplay can't be installed. Regardless you can always retrofit a carplay solution from Unique Audio to any F-Type.

All Jaguar infotainment systems had their issues but I'd say the latest system which the newer car has works very well overall. It was really buggy when it was introduced but after numerous updates I'd say it's fine.

Other than that I agree with others that the front of the pre-facelift R looks a bit better. Just a matter of taste though.

That missing service may be an issue if you ever get any serious problems with the car and get into a discussion about goodwill support from JLR.

Hi, I'm currently tentatively looking for a similar car, the 18 plate car at Rybrooks is on my list of possibilities as I think its the cheapest car available at the moment with the updated media centre - my only issue is that I fancied a change of colour as my current car is black. Obviously depends on how long you are thinking of keeping the car but something else to bear in mind is that car tax on the older car will be £630 a year compared to £165 for a post March 17 car (after 5 years old), but if you were to keep a car for 5 years that's a saving of over £2000 on tax on the newer car!

Rybrook dropped the price of the car by £500 last week, prices generally seem to be falling as of 6 cars on my Autotrader saved list 4 have dropped in price in the last week - but I think its mainly due to previously overinflated prices.

My current favourite is a grey\silver car OE19 EXC which I viewed in Sheffield (if anybody has any info on the car let me know thanks).

Car 64337
Was previously listed on GumTree as an XKR.... not quite!
Registered 26th March 2019
Odd for a Paragon Fleet Solutions Car to have its first service 6 months late and due 3rd service in October.

Passed MOT in March 2022 but been untaxed since 4th Feb 2022 with log book last updated 31st Jan 2022.
Had a battery test on 9th Feb and again 5th March at Jaguar Dealer so presume it was flat from being unused and remains unsold?
No PNC stolen record
There has only been 1 check on the vehicle for previous damage, history etc so would recommend a full independent check.

Thanks guys for your help on this - I am due to pick up the 65 plate older model tomorrow!
I couldn’t find insurance for the 18 for any less than £1800 a year (I am 27 which does not help) - so that’s the £500+ in tax recovered as the insurance on the older model is £1000 or less pa

I decided the carbon pack and the older, more classic aesthetics were what I was looking for. I didn’t like the wheels on the newer model and would’ve had to change them.

Dare I ask @SimpleR for the background now!!

Plate on the 65 is AJ65KTF

Thanks for all the advice everyone and do I become a stamped member here once I’ve collected the car ??!! Lol!

First of the 4x4 models...shame should have held out for a 15 plate and got a RWD ;-)

You made the right choice for looks and wheels. From experience of currently having two cars one with Blades and one with those daft Faux split rimmed bolted alloys; the Blades hide the brake dust well and are easy to clean. The gloss black types scratch just by looking at them!

There's several membership tiers. I think you're close to Bronze!

Learner Tier - Photos of your dinner/detailing products
Bronze Tier - Photos of your car
Silver Tier - Taken part in your own car on a track day
Gold Tier- Tuned, pulleys, exhaust, Youtube doing donuts!

Congratulations W2ren - Enjoy (and apologies for hijacking your post a bit)

SimpleR - thanks for the info, interesting!
The bodywork was in very good condition would doubt it has had any accident damage, couldn't even find any stone chips except for a couple very minor under the front grille just above the splitter. Dealer been chasing me today and Im possibly still interested but think we are a bit too far apart on price to make a deal so will keep looking

oops just realised I made a silly mistake sorry simpleR - reg should be OX19EXC (strange OE19XEC was also an F-Type)

I've looked that one up before 2 years ago. All ok.
Car 22979 and if I recall correctly was the showroom car at Peterborough for 15 months as it was PDI in Feb 2015 before being sold in Oct 2016 with 13 miles on the clock. I think there was a picture online with it outside the dealership. It was missing some service paperwork online but believed it to have been done because it jumps from 36 to 72 month service and it's done not many miles in-between.

If concerned get it booked in for a full fluid change (transfer, rear diff, etc) but hopefully there will be some paperwork with it. Pics pls when you get it.
Enjoy

No problem.
That one is car 65957.
Again Paragon, PDI in June 2019 but not delivered until 10th July 2019. Returned after 1yr and sold onto Jaguar dealer in Wakefield. Serviced at independent in July 2021 and due 3rd service now but has passed an MOT.

All seems ok other than it needs a service. No idea what colour it is though. It is listed on Jaguar system as "CAVIAR".

Thanks again, its a sort of light grey\silver colour. Those black wheels again but I quite like the contrast against the silver, though I can understand how easily marked - but relatively easy to repair I would think.

Thank you guys and thanks simpleR for the peace of mind! I know it is missing the 2019 service but it did only do 5k miles and it has been serviced just 409 miles ago.
Romans in St Albans have promised me a free next service so I shall take it in possibly in 4-6 months depending on mileage !!

Won’t be able to sleep tonight in prep for collection tomorrow!!
