Oil checking

Brand new owner.
I looked to check oil today. Looked on YouTube when I couldn’t find a dipstick….

Car was on and warmed up but when I checked the on-dash menu the oil status option (along with all the others apart from tyres) in the vehicle status menu was greyed out.

Am I missing something ? Is a sensor not fitted or not working ?

Any wisdom gratefully received.

It has to be srressed that the level ground needs to be really level, any slight incline down and you could get "overfilled" if your oil is topped ritght up. And that 10 minutes takes ages to pass! :)

Why does the hood need to be open? Seems a bit of an odd requirement.

The information posted is incorrect. That is for live level for garages following a refill. (Maintenance manual).

To check, run the car as normal. Switch off
Wait 10 min and then check. And make sure it is level surface.

Probably been covered before, but happy to brief new owners.
The oil level reading immediately available on the dash is an average reading. About 100 samples are taken per kilometre and algorythms compensate for temperature etc. to give a live reading.
The reading with the hood (bonnet) open is an actual (dipstick-equivalent) reading, which of course, you need if you've done an oil change as you won't have an average reading.
Personally, I've found that the average and actual readings are always the same between services.

Thanks for replies gentlemen.

Frustratingly I’m still getting just a grey out for the oil level option and I can’t access it even following the button sequence advised 🤬

Can you check it first thing in the morning before you start the engine (ignition on without pressing the footbrake)?

Thanks scm
Yes tried that this morning and got access and a read out.
So in future I should look for the reading hot after 10 mins cool down, level ground with just ignition no, no engine start ?

That's the Jaguar recommended way, but I tend to only check mine when it's been parked for a while and I'm about to use it. IME, these engines don't consume oil so unless you have a bad one I wouldn't stress over checking levels.
