Odd bluetooth audio & app behaviour

Hi All

I am UK based, have a MY2016 F Type R Coupe AWD, which I owned since February. The bluetooth on it has been absolutely fine and working since I bought it. However recently I bought a USB cable to charge my iPhone (12 pro) on long journeys (as my phone battery is just getting terrible now). I plugged in my phone for the first time the other day whilst driving and whilst connected to Bluetooth audio, and as soon as I did, the bluetooth connection stopped and the car defaulted to radio station audio. I also had a temporary notification on my phone asking if I wanted to install the Jaguar app, which I dismissed as was in slow traffic.

Confused, I checked the "change source" menu, and bluetooth had disappeared entirely. After a minute, a new "iPod" option appeared, which I clicked on and after it considered it a bit, it then resumed my Spotify after I had to hard-close Spotify on my phone and re-open it. When I got home I decided to download the "InControl App" as thought maybe this would give me some sort of CarPlay style functionality and make it all easier. After downloading the app and successfully linking to my car - nothing is different when the car is on and my phone is connected via USB - the Bluetooth still stops (and disappears as an option on the source menu) and iPod is there. When trying to press the "InControl Apps" button in the media menu, I get a screen in the car saying "InControl Apps is not available, ensure iPhone has the InControl Apps application installed and as in an unlocked state". This is all whilst having the phone connected via USB and even the app open in the phone.

Does anyone know what to do here to make use of the Jaguar InControl app for smoother audio playing, as I presume that's what Jag intended for it and why i got that initial invitation when I first connected the cable? Why does bluetooth auto-cut when I connect the cable? Have I downloaded the wrong app? Any guidance around this topic appreciated please, I've checked the forums for similar but can't see the exact same problem.

Cheers

Those incontrol apps are dead and more or less discontinued. There used to be some spotiy app there but JLR killed it off years ago. I'm afraid you can disregard the whole incontrol apps thing and there's nothing carplay like there. In the newer first facelift MY18 infotainment there is a kind of built in spotify app in the car which lets you stream music directly to the car if you have a SIM fitted but that's a different story.

As far as I know it's normal that it switches over from bluetooth audio streaming to another kind of wired "ipod mode" streaming if you plug your phone into the car's USB port. That's just the way it works. But it did work once the phone was recognised as an ipod, right? The best thing if you want to avoid faffing about is perhaps to stream via bluetooth and charge it using a USB charger in the 12V socket which won't make the car switch from bluetooth streaming to "ipod" streaming.

Otherwise of course a good option is to just retrofit a carplay interface.

Do you have an 'MFi' (Made For iPhone) cable as not all USB->Lightning cables are the same? Some will just charge whereas others do the full handshake and data exchange. Use either a genuine Apple one or I can suggest one from Anker as they're quite robust too with their braided cloth over-sleeve

In my MY18 (standard Meridian) the Bluetooth connects immediately but using the USB port means I have to contend with the radio coming on before having to manually select the iDevice media as a source

As MajorTom says, if I was you I'd charge my phone via a USB charger in the 12v socket not the car's USB port. This will avoid the issue.

Thanks all - I’ll try the 12v charger option just for general charging and keep it on Bluetooth for Spotify. The usb cable was a 3rd party one from Amazon so not sure if it’s “MFI” or not.

Appreciate everyone’s help :)
