NOCO Boost GB20/GB40 Portable Jump Starter pack

I’ve been considering buying a NOCO portable lithium-ion battery jump starter pack (starter and protective case) for some time. What put me off is that going back a while ago the positive connection popped off my car’s battery after I’d gone out for a drive and parked the car up. At the time I had nothing with me to get the boot open so a friend brought along a fully charged Ring Lithium portable jump starter (can’t remember which model it was). I tried this on the connection points under the bonnet and it was no good no matter what. Luckily he also brought jump leads and after a bit of fiddling with the connectors all was ok and I was able to open the boot to reconnect the battery positive lead.

Does anyone have the NOCO GB20 or GB40? If so have you used it to jump start your car from the connection points under the bonnet and would you recommend it? Also, does it come with it's own charger lead?

I have the 3 litre V6S so the NOCO GB20 appears to be more than adequate as it’s suitable for engines up to 4 litres. These are the Halfords links I've seen....

NOCO Boost GB20 500A Jump Starter & Protective Case Bundle. Suitable for petrol engines up to 4 litres (not suitable for diesel engines). Priced at £110.

NOCO Boost GB40 1000A Jump Starter & Protective Case Bundle. Suitable for petrol engines up to 6 litres, and diesel engines up to 3 litres. Priced at £130.

I'd be interested to know if they've improved. I bought a GB150 which is the biggest one. It died just after the warranty period and the battery was no longer chargeable making it useless. They apparently don't like being cold, or stored fully charged, or stored slightly discharged and the list goes on and on 🤦

Thanks for the info.

Typical that it died just after the 1 year manufacturer warranty period! How long ago did you buy it?

So far they don't sound any good unless as you say they've improved?

I’ve got a couple of the NOCO products; the maintainer and the boost pack thingee, and haven’t had any trouble with them. The only issue when jump starting is finding a decent ground/negative connection on the vehicle concerned as the engine lifting eyes have oxidised, or the chassis ground point is inaccessible

It’s incredibly rare for a battery terminal connector to come off its post, so that would tell me it wasn’t seated and/or torqued correctly when doing the bolt up at installation. Or you’ve been driving across the Sahara in a DB9…

Do they include the NOCO GB20 or GB40 and how long have you had them?

Yes, it’s the first time that the battery positive connection has come off any of my cars on its own. It was definitely seated and tightened correctly as I’d done a battery reset a few months earlier. I now check it periodically to ensure all is ok. For the sake of 5 mins I’d recommend others to check their battery terminal connections are secure to prevent the issue I had.

Lol, haven’t driven across the Sahara yet!

I’ve had the GB40 since December 2021 and keep it on my van, and it’s proved to be very useful

That’s good to know. I take it that your van is out in all kinds of weather? Reason I ask is because what paddy1000111 said earlier about the NOCO.....“They apparently don't like being cold, or stored fully charged, or stored slightly discharged and the list goes on and on.”

In the links I provided it says.....“When charged, the battery in the jump starter will deplete at approximately 1% to 2% per month. We recommend re-charging once per year if not used.”

How often have you had to charge your GB40?

+1 for NICO GB40, brought one 4 weeks ago, when the dealer fitted starline battery died after 1vyear even after being on ctek trickle charger all the time GB40 was. £80 from Halfords, provides enought juice to turn over my 5.0 litre, takes around 3 hours to fully charge

The positive/negstive connectors can jump off it the battery posts if they are not fully seated. The battery posts are tapered, i noted that when i changed the battery recently, that the clamp will not fully grip the post unless it pushed fully down before tighting

Yes, the van is out in all weathers and the GB40 is stored in my emergency kit (extra-heavy duty jump leads, warm jacket, chocolate fondue set) under the passenger seat. I charge it after every use so that it’s always ready to go and give it a precautionary charge every few months although I can’t say exactly how many times I’ve charged it but it must be in the low 20’s

Also have a GB40 ( since Sept 21) it’s kept fully charged in my car, bagged along with assorted emergency kit. Test it twice a year, never yet more than 20 minutes back to fully charged. Used it on two occasions and no issues.

Thanks guys. Does it come with its own USB charger lead?

Yes, see both below.

Cheers.

The NOCO GB40 (1000A) seems to be quite popular so far. However, as the GB20 (500A) is suitable for petrol engines up to 4 litres I was thinking this should be sufficient for my 3 litre V6S?

There again, after reading the following review, the GB40 appears to be the better option of the two and the price difference is only around £20 more.....

“The battery is the expendable part in Nocos design (and in fact in any lithium jump starter). By using the device you will sacrifice the battery sooner or later. They are designed like that. The only way around this is to oversize the jump starter, i.e. go for the bigger ones to use them on the engines recommended for the smaller ones. Used on the same engine the GB150 will last much longer than the GB40.”

It was a fair while ago now. I want to say 2019 maybe. They have come out with newer models since. I think mine suffered from lack of use more than anything else. I don't think the battery liked being in the car during cold and hot spells

Cheers.

The NOCO GB series seem to be ok but apparently some of the newer GBX series are having issues with ‘not taking a charge’ as explained in this video.....

My battery failures would show as it get stuck charging on 3/4 and no matter if I used the usb or the 12v adapter I couldn't get it to go any higher than 3/4. After leaving for a few days it would slowly run down. Apart from the battery issues I really liked the unit. If they made one with a replaceable battery cartridge I would 100% buy another. Sadly once the battery has failed they can't help and at £350 a unit I wasn't going to go again. I'll just keep the money for 10 years of home start breakdown cover 😂

Just buy the GB40 as you won't need anything else; it kicks out enough amps, is robust, and works. Or you could wait until one of the well-known German discounters have a booster pack on offer...?

At £350 I don’t blame you there!.....‘Once bitten, twice shy’ as they say.

Yes, the NOCO GB40 is my preferred choice. If I buy one I’ll be placing it in the passenger footwell, especially after the battery positive lead deciding to pop off on its own! When I’m not using the car I’ll keep it at home as that may prolong its lifespan (not outside in cold weather etc).
