Newbie looking to purchase my first F-Type

Hi all,
I have decided it's time to take the plunge and treat myself to a weekend car.
I'm based in Norwich and came across this example at a local dealership:
https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202409073769968?sort=distance&advertising-location=at_cars&make=Jaguar&model=F-Type&postcode=nr78bs&fromsra

My biggest concerns are that although it's in the Group1 dealership group, it's not being advertised through their Jag dealership. This makes me think there is something wrong with it as although the current dealership would offer 6 months warranty, it wouldn't come with Jag's own used approved warranty.

I also asked for the service history and the dealership can only find 2 recorded services at 8k miles in Nov-2015 and 16k in Jan-2017. The car has only done 11k miles since then but I'm a bit weary of a car which hasn't been serviced, despite low mileage, in nearly 8 years.

From what I have read on this forum, it seems that there should be a lot of items serviced around the 9-10 year mark and I can't imagine these have been done.

Should I steer clear or am I over thinking?

Any advise would be greatly appreciated!

I would recommend you carry out a CarVertical check which will give you the VIN number as well as checks against stolen registers and checks for outstanding finance and any recorded damage. You can then check the service history that Jaguar have for the car by visiting osh.jaguar.com and putting the VIN in. If you ask the dealer they may give you the VIN anyway so you can check without paying for a CarVertical report.

Lack of Jaguar service history may be because it's been serviced at an independent who can't update the OSH, in which case there should be invoices. But if you're having doubts anyway ....

There are plenty out there, so don't expect to fall into the one with your name on it straightaway! ;)

And welcome to the forum!

As Major Tom and others here pointed out previously, I'd look for a later model, 2016 onward due to known issues affecting the early models built between 2013-2014. It's not worth the risk and if you're happy with an auto box then there's plenty to choose from at the same price range.

Personally think it is a bit late in the year to be able to enjoy a weekend convertible sports car. Would definitely go for a later model, keep researching and buy in Jan/Feb when prices usually at their lowest

Thanks all, I appreciate all the feedback and info !
The dealership have confirmed they don't have any other invoices for the car so I'm going to assume maintenance hasn't been kept on top of and I'll keep looking.

It’s quite a basic specification and the MoT history is interesting with scored/pitted discs at 23,000 miles, tyre bulges, and covering about 500 miles between each MoT

It maybe isn’t the right time of year to enjoy roof down motoring, other than those crisp autumnal mornings, but it’s a good time to buy one as values will be slightly less than at the start of a summer

Welcome to the forum 👍

As others have mentioned, fsh is a must. No justification for anything missing on that front. Plenty of pampered cars out there & easy to weed out the chaff.

Not sure you need to avoid the earlier cars, if well maintained. All years have faults. The later models with LED headlights can fault & are expensive to replace. Not the flex really needed for a weekend warrior.

Lots of very knowledgeable, long term, owners on here with access to in depth history. Post up the reg & ask for simpleR 🙏😊

Enjoy your search & subsequent ownership. Had my weekend warrior seven years. Every drive is an event met with compliments, thumbs-up, photos, questions at petrol stations, let out of junctions etc. 👍

Only thing I can add that hasn’t already been mentioned is maybe the car age is why it’s not been sold through Group 1 Jaguar, regardless if it’s been sold through a dealer you have Consumer rights act protection

Car 9432

2,431 days overdue a service.

1st owner kept it until 22nd March 2018.
2nd owner put it on plate Y11TRM and it was transferred to the selling dealer on 8th August 2024.
So a nice 2 owner car so a shame it has no service history or paperwork to support it.
