NEW - UK Speeding fines (24 April 2017)

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to make everyone aware, if you hadn't already heard about the new UK speeding fines that are introduced as of 24 April 17.
Speeding fines will now be stricter in England and Wales, as they have had away with the old 10% + 2 rule and now will consider speeding from +1 mph above the stated limit. Fines will now also be calculated against your weekly income, with a different % depending on the severity of the speeding charge.

Fine Band A
50% of weekly income
Range: (25 – 75% of weekly income)

Fine Band B
100% of weekly income
Range: (75 – 125% of weekly income)

Fine Band C
150% of weekly income
Range: (125 – 175% of weekly income)

Thanks Benji. Had heard about the potential for increased fines, but hadn't realised that the old 10%+2 guideline was being relaxed too.

Wonder if they'll start re-calibrating fixed speed cameras to suit...

Is this England and Wales only? You've mentioned that above but the Evo article doesn't.

Not that I'm planning to speed just because I'm in Scotland

I work up in Scotland and all my colleagues up there believe it is only England and Wales. Scotland has always been stricter with speeding in the past, whenever I hit the border I stick the cruise control on at 70. Plus got to keep a keen eye for undercovers on some of the mountain roads like Glenshee and the Lecht. Not that you would speed anyway dezzy...

So, if you are unemployed and don't have a driving license the message is 'go for it' as there is nothing they can do.

Next they will bring in parking charges based on the cost of your car.

There's never been a better reason to get a detector in my opinion. Not to be used to speed but to check the speed you are doing via gps alongside the cars speedo which is now much more important with the 10% + 2 mph removed. Just invested in an Aguri Skyway gtx 60 which provides advanced warnings plus gps speed display and sits nicely on the flat bit on top of the dash between the dials.

I'm not sure I can follow the logic of buying a speed detector as 'not to speed, but check speed'
If you weren't speeding then there's no need for a speed detector
Are you suggesting that it's only important to be aware of your speed by detecting speed cameras?

If you'd said with the increased fines and reduced tolerance levels then detecting and avoiding speed camera fines is much more important, or if the unit knew all speed limits and bleeped at anytime anywhere you exceeded them, I'd understand your point

Sorry - I should clarify that because of the increased fines and lower tolerances it is clearly more important than ever to check your speed very accurately. The unit can be set to provide an audible warning of exceeding a pre-set limit but it doesn't have a database of actual limits. It does have both radar and laser detection plus a database for known camera locations.

I use it as a double check for speed and it's helpful to know the danger spots.

That makes a lot more sense. Increased cost and lower tolerance levels makes a reasonable argument to fit a device to avoid accidentally slipping up in the zone of a camera.

One thing I miss from my BMW days, unless I just haven't found it on the F-Type is you could dial in any speed limit on screen and if you exceeded it then it would bleep at you. Easily selectable for say 70 on a motorway if you were miss Daisy or higher if you felt that some sort of threshold was acceptable. Not a speed limiter per se, just a warning device

In Nav on my car it's possible in settings to set a speed limit warning if the speed limit is exceeded by x mph. You can configure this.

I also use a speed camera/black spot detector as well

It won't be long before speeding is not possible in the UK with a new car. They have the technology already to know where you are, the speed limit for that road, and the ability to apply a limiter. it's not a big jump. Most modern cars could do this already.

Your F-Type already tracks this information - see the iPhone App. They just need the political will to enforce it. One day you will take the F-Type for Service and you will be 'updated' without your consent.

For some reason they don't have the will right now. Maybe the speeding fine money is too useful - cynical I know.

I was on a major manufacturers production line earlier in the week .. Some of their models have 70+ ecu's so no wonder they can track people ... And it's why I use my alternative transport for quick runs ...

Most of the time I the Coupe or my daily and rarely open the taps anymore, too many cameras for a start ....

Yeah, I imagine the Tornado is quicker than the F-Type anyway.... :lol:
