New Owner P380 - Exhaust Noise 2019, Ceramic Coat + Performance

Hey everyone,

I’ve been a long time lover of the F Type and I’m finally in the position to be buying a 2019 P380 in Ultra Blue. To say I’m stoked would be an understatement - the last 2 nights I’ve been lay awake until 1am, far too excited to sleep! 😂

I wanted to first share my excitement with someone who can relate to it and secondly ask a handful of questions which hopefully may be helpful to others looking to purchase too :

1. This is a 19 plate but has the old style sat nav. Should I expect the same exhaust noise as the Clarkson video or will the exhaust now be quieter with newer regulations etc.?

2. A specific one which you may not be able to answer - I’m coming from an M140i. I’m expecting very similar straight line performance but for it to handle significantly better (and obviously look and sound better). Thoughts?

3. I’m considering getting it detailed and ceramic coated. I’ll be honest - I’ll likely never clean my car myself. Is a ceramic coat a good move and if so, is the local Tesco hand wash acceptable or will it need special treatment afterwards? (They’ve washed my current car for the past 2-3 years and have always done a cracking job)

4. I’ve not seen the car yet - it’s done very low mileage and is Jaguar approved. Is there any specific I should be checking with the car before I sign on the dotted line

Thanks so much everyone. It’s nice to go from a long time lurker to a poster

Matt

p.s. Should be picking the car up Saturday

Hi and welcome Matt.

Point 1 and 4 - "a 19 plate but old sat Nav" what do you mean by this? You mean the 8" inch screen with buttons on the sides? Jaguar specifications work by Model year or MY which run in advance. What plate the car is on is irrelevant when looking at spec.
IE a brand new F-Type now would be on a 20 plate but be a MY21 model. If you PM me the reg I can send you the spec.

Point 2 - Have you not had a test drive?
I wouldn't put the F-Type in the throw it around B roads category and the M140i is a quick car with 340bhp and has more torque? And weighs less?
Performance wise I would guess that they would be similar but with different characteristics.

Having looked into, I think the car you are looking has the reg ending MPZ.

This is car 55732. It was made Q4 2017 and is a MY18 spec car hence it has the Pro with buttons Sat Nav as opposed to the later MY19 buttonless sat nav.
PDI on 2nd Feb 2018 by Guy Salmon, Kent.

It wasn't then registered with a plate until 30th March 2019 so may of been a showroom car or customer order that wasn't fulfilled and left in stock. That is why it is an older model but on a later reg plate.

Nice car, im sure you'll love it!

In my opinion the P380 wouldnt keep up with an M140i on twisty roads - as SimpleR said, its lighter, more torque and more agile. Straight line performance would be similar, I think an M140i would be slightly in front if from a stand still, rolling not much in it. If the BM is your performance benchmark, I'd definitely recommend having a test drive first

I would recommend ceramic coating, but dont be fooled - this doesnt make the car 'scratch resistant' as many companies claim, in reality it makes the car 'shiny' and much easier to clean. It will help protect against light swirl marks but wont stop heavy marks or marks altogether. They do require a level of care/maintenance and going to tesco car wash would not be recommended. *normally* any local hand car wash will first off spray your car with some sort of truck wash / quite harsh chemicals to soften dirt and make it easy for them to clean - this would strip your car of the ceramic coating pretty quickly and it normally a killer for nice alloy wheels as well (corrosion around centre caps is a common sign)

Point 2
As owner of a V6S and with a friend with an M140i I can assure you that on Lake district mountain roads and straights you will not leave the M40i behind. All at legal speeds of course and you would need a racetrack to truly benchmark. The M40i is built as a halo hot performance car and as such the BMW is far better car if that's what you want to achieve.
The F Type is a totally different car so if you have not had a decent test drive then you should do so or you will be disappointed
Personally I would never swap to those class of cars, even when I was a Z4 owner and knew they could outperform the Zed with relative ease, because looks, sound and experience is in a different league

Another thing to consider is how long you want to spend in the car. The F-Type is such a nice place to be you just don't have the incentive to get to your destination quickly. ;)

There are cheaper cars that are a bit better handling and faster (depending on model). However, the looks, sound and personality of these cars is always a big attraction, even in recent car reviews.

The big difference is that, people with absolutely no interest or knowledge of cars, will come over just to tell you how beautiful it is. Nothing else does this for the same money. The downside is it doesn't blend in when parked and is also a bit wide and low for multi storeys.

Look for panel gaps/alignment. Particularly the bottom edge of the doors to the sills. Sometimes the doors stick out a bit, which requires the sill to be unbolted and realigned in a body shop, which dealers try to ignore to save pennies.

Hi Matt,
I have both a 380 V6s and a 2016 BMW M135i post LCI as a daily driver.

The BMW is the quicker of the two cars no doubt on most roads, if sheer speed and handling is your goal. But in reality how often or can you drive any car with over 300 BHP to their maximum on our roads.
As Mick eluded to they are very different characters with very different public perceptions. But I would recommend you drive an F Type before laying down your hard earned cash.

Welcome - a great choice of car and colour - although I may be slightly biased!

Check underneath for cross bar corrosion, mine was brand new and already corroded due to being parked outside with Jaguar prior to delivery.

Mine is a MY20 and is much quieter than the MY18 I test drove, I would very much like to somehow make mine sound like the one I tested!

The ‘older’ Satnav also has some advantages as with roof down in sunshine I can’t see the 10” screen at all, but not much of a loss, you don’t buy a Jag for the infotainment system.

I would definitely recommend test driving before buying any car, especially one as expensive as this. I love it not for its performance but for how I feel when driving it and the reactions of others to it as has been mentioned. Had people coming over to look at it when filling up and even school kids shouting out “Nice Jag!” As I drove past - not something I ever got in any other car I’ve owned.

I would definitely agree with the level of interest when driving and the comments made in carparks etc

I believe if you go with ceramic coating you get a choice of normal shiny film or think they call it stealth which gives the car a matte look. I have seen both and the plain is very shiny and showroom style and the matte looks broody!!!

As mentioned already think it mainly for minor chips and abrasions, bird droppings etc and protects the paint underneath

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for the replies, I really appreciate it. Thanks for looking into the spec and specific car Simpler, that’s very useful and makes sense. Could I be so cheeky to ask if you’d be able to access a full spec sheet? I’d be very keen to see that if it’s easy for you?

In regards to the M140i comments - it sure is a quick car. To clarify - performance is probably 4th on the list after looks, sound and the feeling I’ll get from ‘achieving’ owning the car I’ve dreamt of for several years. I don’t care if the M140i pips the F Type performance wise, if it’s a step down in performance then that’s all good - it’s nice to know what to expect so thanks.

If the car was made Q4 2017 I presume this won’t have a PPF filter and so should still be the louder? Unless a software update has put an end to that. I appreciate that’s a difficult question to answer.

Really appreciate the answers to the above, it’s nice to hear from some owners!

Cheers,

Matt

Mine's only a few months older than yours and is still as loud as ever. It's had one software update that made it a tiny bit quieter on startup (so my neighbour says!) and lost the ability to remember the dynamic setting for up to six hours - it now resets to off on every start, not much of a hardship. Mine is due to visit the dealer for some warranty work next Wednesday so I'm waiting to see what they "fix" in addition to what it's going in for.

As far as I am aware, MY18 cars did not have a PPF. There was an update to MY18 cars so that they "forget" dynamic mode after an ignition cycle.

Can’t find the reply button in the private messages (on my mobile) but Thankyou so much for that - I really appreciate you taking the time to do that.

SCM that’s great to hear, hopefully mine will be then
