New owner from the Netherlands

I've been lurking on this forum for a while and before I start engaging in any discussions I thought it would be nice to introduce myself here.

I live in the Netherlands, work as IT consultant and I'm a bit of a car nut. As such, I'm always looking for a fun car within my budget. It started out with small, sporty Peugeot 205's and 106's followed by a classic Mini and a first gen Mazda Miata (US import).

The past 8 years I've thoroughly enjoyed a Honda S2000 (2001), which I take on roadtrips throughout Europe, especially Germany (Eiffel mountains) and Italy (Italian Alps). I've taken it to the UK on many occasions as well, to Somerset, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and other areas.

But as always, after a while I want to move on to something a bit more powerful, with a bigger engine and maybe a bit less 'hardcore', especially as the S2000 will stick around as well for at least a while. I did consider an XKR but after driving it, it was maybe a bit too much of a GT for me and the interior is a bit old-school. The Jaguar F-Type has been one of my 'dream cars' ever since it came out and I've always said that if one day the F-Types will be within my budget, I will go for it and it seems that time has come: the earlier models (2013-2015 roughly) are within reach, so it is time to dive in and learn about the car and what to look for when buying one.

I haven't decided yet on exactly which one to buy, but it will be at least a V6 S. So far I have only driven a V6 S Convertible and I liked it a lot, but I'm also looking at V8 S or R and I haven't decided on convertible or coupe either, hopefully I'll be able to do some testdrives in spring after lockdown (...). I did almost buy an Italian Racing Red V6 S Convertible a couple of months ago in Germany, but someone else beat me to it by just hours, which is a shame because it was low mileage and a great spec (carbon blade wheels, black pack, upgraded seats etc.).

That's about it. I'm not in a hurry to buy one, it may take months or maybe more than a year still (I've been looking around for 6 months already), when there are any developements, I'll update this topic.

Greetings from the Netherlands!

Update Januari 22, 2021:
Good news! I have bought a 2016 Jaguar F-Type V6 S Convertible AWD!! More updates coming soon.

It's here! See:

Welocome to the forum, and to a potential owner! Yoiu won't find many on here who will discourage you in your quest - they're great cars. :D
When I first test drove one when I was looking seriously, it was sold while I was making up my mind on whether I wanted it! I had decided it was too high mileage for me, though, so I knew the right one was still waiting for me - and I was right!

Thanks and I'm not expecting any push back on this forum on buying an F-Type

I do have specific wishes, although they are not set in stone. I'm not a big fan of white cars in general and the same goes for the F-Type. Black is not my favorite either, unless it's metallic in combination with black pack, black wheels and red calipers (and maybe red seats), that I can live with :D In the end the condition of the car is the most important aspect.

Welcome to the forum.

Having been through a similar process myself, as well as the obvious dilemmas (coupé/convertible & engine size), I'd recommend spending a bit of time familiarising yourself with the various options available, eg. cruise control, heated seats, exhaust button etc. and deciding which are essential for you. Hopefully being armed with this knowledge will help narrow down your search.

Have fun looking!

Thanks! I've already found an original brochure from 2015, which details all the options and specs which is really helpful.

It's not gonna be a daily driver (I currently drive a Jaguar XE 2.0d company car), so I'm not that picky on comfort options. It's mostly the big things like color, seats and wheels. I would like to have the configurable dynamic mode, which is an option I believe, and the active exhaust button. I only found out recently it is not standard on a V6 S, at least not on the earlier ones. Most of them do have the option specced though.

While I'm probably not typical, I don't find the active exhaust button much use - if I want it loud I use dynamic, and if I want it quiet I leave dynamic off. I don't have a need (or want!) for loud if not in dynamic, and the switch only works to close the valves in dynamic, not make things even louder. Above about 3,500 revs the valves will always be open anyway, the switch can't be used to change that. This info is for an MY18, other MYs may (and do, apparently) have different characteristics.

Welcome to the forum.

As you have an original brochure from 2015 you should be able to see that Configurable Dynamic Mode with 'Dynamic-i' display and the Switchable Active Sports Exhaust is standard on the F-Type V6S.

I have the F-Type specification and price guide (April 2015) which shows exactly this. I also have another Jaguar original document from 2013/2014 which shows that the Switchable Active Exhaust is standard on the V6S.

Good luck with your search......the right car will come along as mine did.

Hi Sander,

Welcome to the forum. I am also a Dutch F-Type driver. My son (then 18) and I did a trip from Salzburg to Irun in may/june 2019, trying to go through as many mountain passes as possible. Just that year many were closed, the first time in 140 yrs since the Swiss are keeping track of the opening of their roads.

I tried to keep up the thread but we had very bad internet so I took some time to catch up :
https://www.ftypeforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=24&t=3525

These are two topspeed tests on the Autobahn. We wanted to do a third this year, but my son was to bizzy :
https://www.ftypeforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=4293&p=41706#p41706

There is an active group of NL / BE / LU drivers which organise tours normally every spring and autumn, none this year at all.
I organised the last one : https://www.ftypeforums.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=3647

I started out looking at an XK V8 from 2006. But I didn't fit since I am 2m tall and 105Kg. The chair of that car probably suffered
all its life under a simular driver as there was so much free play in the adjustment of the seat, it almost got sea sick in curves...
And there were electronical issues as well, so my wife told me to get a new one. But the V6 / V8 were then already too expensive
for my budget. So I bought a P300, partly with a loan at 2%.

I tried the V6 as a cabrio. I really do like the sound, but the choice between a new P300 or a used V6 was easily made.
The V8 I could use for a day from my dealer. Very impressive but too big a risk to loose my license ; in a whisk you
are driving 180+ and you hardly notice it. Great if I was living in Germany, but not here !

Also quite some owners who were angry about the downgrading of the model by introducing the 4 cylinder and were really
degrading about the engine changed their minds disgruntedly after driving a P300 on curvy roads. The nose is 65-80Kg lighter,
and that is a huge difference on the agility of the car.

If you want I can pm you my phone number so we can discuss things easier if you want.

I also wrote a review in autoweek : https://www.autoweek.nl/reviews/artikel/jaguar-f-type-coupe-20-i4-300pk-2018/

But I stopped adding on to it. That website has some idiots as moderators who remove posts without checking the previous posts.
So I removed reviews of my F-Pace (sold), Discovery 3 (over 10 years ongoing) and my Discovery 5 that I just started, in protest.
I was about to remove the F-Type review last, when I noticed they got the message and unblocked me.

There is a pirvate seller now offering a V6 cabrio, dead cheap since several months. You might be able to get it for 33k I guess .
Its imported before, build 2014 and registered here in 2018, but its white . You said you don't like that :

If you buy one from a foreign dealer with the "approved" label, that is valid in the Netherlands too !

But the German cars can not have the tracking activated in the Netherlands I have been told by a dealer.

But there are aftermarket tracking systems available too.

PS. Please add your general location. Like " Zeeland" , so we all have a clue.

Thanks, useful information! I'll read through your Autoweek review. I like that blue color!

I have nothing against the P300, it's just that I already have a roadster with a great 4-cylinder engine (the Honda S2000) which is much lighter than any F-Type anyway. I want something with a bigger engine this time, call it an automotive bucketlist thing :)

Nice to see there's a Benelux group, once I have mine I might just join in, doing roadtrips is my favorite activity with my cars.

The white F-Type looks like a good deal, but indeed, I am not looking for a white one, thanks for pointing it out though.

Hi Sander,

Looks like you are near Corné, he lives in Breda ! I understand you completely. I had a Discovery 3 for ten years as a family car.
Sold it last december due to 'soot-tax' , roadtax went up to € 3500 pa. Sold it to another D3-lover in Luxembourg, he pays € 250 pa.

So I thought I could scale down a bit and bought an F-Pace 25t R-Sport. But I missed the space and traded it in on a 2018 Discovery 5 SD4.

So yes, I can understand if you want something, you only want that. Nothing to do with reason.

It could be a cheap option to wrap the white car in any color you want.. .. metallic poison green. .. 8-)

As I didn't like the plastic airplane cockpit, so I changed some to 'wood-alike'... :mrgreen

That looks quite nice! Although I don't mind the default look myself (maybe I'm not a typical Jaguar driver in that sense ;) ).

Wrapping is an option, but I do prefer the car in the right color straight away, so it's more of a last resort for me if I really can't find the car in the right color. And I'm not at that point yet.

Thanks ! The wood is a "thing" for the older generations I think.

Er, not for everyone in the older generation! But maybe I'm not a typical Jaguar driver, either. ;)

+1 for that.......give me the carbon fibre or aluminium centre console finishers any day! ;)

Let's not turn this into a "What is a typical Jaguar driver" discussion

Thankfully everyone is different, else everyone would be driving the exact same spec car which would be really boring...
