Must do’s for new owner

New member
Our new baby arrived last night and is securely parked under the security camera. Sadly no garage available so an external cover is on order and due in next couple of days.

What would be your top tips I should be doing to keep her in tip top condition? Which petrol/additives/paint protection/under seal/steering lock? Anything really that you would do straight away.

Hi and welcome to the forum the first thing I would do is get a ghost immobiliser fitted and a good steering wheel lock for security with it not being in a garage then a good coating of wax to keep it nice and shiny plus some photos cheers Tony
 
Mostly just drive, smile and enjoy it!

Keep an eye on the underbody steel braces as they can and do corrode. I use Dynax UB to spray on them but other underbody treatments are available! Some owners take them off and get them properly treated/painted.

Beautiful.

For me, visible steering lock and Faraday pouches for the keys (if you have keyless entry) . Other than that, just enjoy!
 
Think carefully about the cover.
If it’s for regular or daily on and off then you will likely cause damage to the paint pulling it on and off dirty paint.
For longer period then it’s a good idea
 
Agree with c10jeeper, only use cover when parking up for a few weeks. Keep clean and protected and it will be fine.

One small tip is to keep the door/window rubbers lubricated. You can purchase small tin of clear silicone grease, off eBay, for a couple of quid. Run a thin smear along the door/window rubbers a couple of times a year. This will ensure the doors & windows close smoothly when opening/closing.

Only use Shell V-Power in mine. Supposedly has extra additives that help. Not sure on the technicalities but no harm using the best.

I don’t use pressure a washer. Hose pipe is perfectly sufficient. Be aware of excessive water getting in bonnet vents. Water can sit around spark plug & injector seatings causing issues at replacement time.

Think about renewing diff oil at some point. There have been issues & having clean diff oil can prevent problems later on.

My car was kept outside for 18 months with only sunny weekend use. Used a bespoke tailored outdoor cover over the grey OEM soft one for protection in between outings. Very secure, dry & warm.

What I've done so far is based on advice on here, 100% Diff oil change. Cheap to do and by now yours will be sludge like!
Gget the underneath checked over whilst they do the oil and see what state the braces are in. Get them protected if they are in good nick.
Then just use it!

So drive it, wash it, exercise your smile muscles and build in an extra 15 minutes for EVERY journey to talk to admirers (of the car not necessarily the driver!!) when you park it.

Also not a fan of covering dirty or wet cars.

As for diff oil, as yours is a 340 it's not really that necessary. The 380 has a LSD which is a lot more prone to suffering from dirty oil.

Interesting. What is the issue with the diff oil? Does it just deteriorate faster than JLR recommend it needs changing? I've bought a 2016 base F Type that hasn't had it's diff oil changed (from my quick skim over service history). Would it be something to change ASAP or is it fine for the next MOT/service. The car sounds fine and there's no unusual noises or feeling from the car.

You don’t mention your mileage, which is more important for the diff oil change, but being a 340 it won’t suffer the deterioration seen by those in the above link, so you’ll be fine to leave it until your next service.
 
For ease of mind invest in a Ghost 2 immobiliser- having just replaced my stolen F Type I have had this done and a visible Disklok on the steering wheel. Very impressed with how quickly and discreet the fitting was and the fact there is no subscription and you take it to your next car also appeals.

Plus, if you have the car stolen with the Ghost 2 fitted, they'll refund the cost of the immobiliser :D

Wow 😂 when I bought my steering wheel lock it said if the car is stolen with it properly fitted I would get $2000 - happy days - how do I prove it was properly fitted? And what good is $2000 to me when I have just lost a $100k+ car.
