Is there any reason I can't just attach a standard battery charger (on AGM setting) to the Ftypes battery in situ provided I have disconnected the cars negative and positive leads from the battery ?

I know people favour trickle chargers or reconditioners....but for a one time charge top up I just can't get my head around why I can't simply use the my normal battery charger if the battery is sat in the Ftype but fully disconnected ?

Yes, if you want to charge it independently go ahead but you don’t need to disconnect, aside from ensuring not directly on negative pole?

Thanks. Sorry..what did you mean...."aside from ensuring not directrly on negative pole"

Do you mean that the battery charger should not be connected direct to the negative point on the battery ...and if so why not ?

If I DO disconnect the battery can I connect the charger direct to both poles of the battery ? (again, I can't think why not)

Cheers

In situ charging should be done by connecting the charger to an earth point, not the negative terminal to ensure the BMS is in the circuit. Connecting to the negative battery terminal bypasses the BMS so it won't be monitoring the battery state. If the battery is out of the car (don't close the boot lid!), or disconnected, then yeah, connect directly to the terminals (no earth to find!).

As SCM has fully explained, inc the most important part I forgot to mention. If you are disconnecting entirely “Don’t shut the boot/hatch😳

Thanks. Is there any benefit of charing in situ over totally disconnecting and charing old school with the charger attached to positive and negatives of the battery ?

The real benefit of in situ charging is the convenience- it's so easy to just connect the charger to the pre-fitted connector "socket" (usually a lead). Open the boot, expose the connector, plug in, close the boot, switch on the power to the charge and wait until the charger shows green! Easy!

As mentioned, use a modern battery maintainer so your electrics are protected.
