Michelin Pilot 4S

Hi all
Still waiting for the car...have been reading on the forum about issues in relation to tyre choice and grip. Pirelli doesn't seem to come out well but Michelin does. Bearing in mind my car is still to be built anybody any experience of speccing/asking for a particular brand from the factory?

Even if the Michelins were an approved fitment, you cannot specify the brand of tyre to be fitted to your car at the time of manufacture. The best you can do is have a side deal with your supplying dealer, they may play ball to nail the order.

Believe me the Michelins are amazing I have them on my RWD R Sport Coupe, you would almost think it was all wheel drive, the Pirellis were a joke a blip of the throttle and the back end would flip out. They are the difference between night and day, my Pirellis were not even half worn but I am so happy that I replaced them, the driveability of the car is in a different league not to mention safety!

I went through the first two winters with the Pirellis without any issues. Now with 18,000 miles and circa 3mm left on the rear the Pirelli's need some care in lower temperatures wet or dry. I'll probably change to Michelin soon and it will be interesting to compare how they grip as they wear down.

My Pirelli rears are appalling in the merest hint of moistness on the roads.

Need to renew, would like to go with the Michelin’s but my front Pirelli’s are almost brand new so I’m loathe to chuck them away.
Also wondering if the warranty conditions are to have J rated tyres (like Porsche and the N ratings and their warranty)

Thanks for the input Myer Mick and Zyp. Order's already placed so can't really use that tack. Will ask the question of the dealership and let you know if I have any success.

I had Porsche N0 on the rears, fitted by the dealer. I thought the thing was trying to kill me at the merest hint of throttle. On a damp day I was the slowest thing on the road, particularly coming off roundabouts. In the dry, the rear would skip and hop trying to gain traction, It was a pretty awful and sometimes scarey drive.

After speaking with Pirelli Technical and Jaguar Customer Services and both saying those tyres are wrong for the F Type, the dealer swapped them for AMS marked tyres.

I keep hearing the expression "like night and day" with referrence to Michelin v Pirelli but it also applies to Pirelli P Zero N0 v AMS,

Mine were also the AMS version and they are scary in comparison to the Michelins, I would never have believed it possible to have such an improvement in grip and handling yes the difference is "night & day"!

My SVR came with Pzero, they are the newer PZ4 version on the rear which is the latest version of Pzero which is improved, however the car is still quite nervous in the wet, but with the AWD you can still make good progress.

I had a new Mustang a couple years back, the new UK S550 model with V8. Those came with Pzero all round and yes in the wet, particular when colder under 15c the Pzero was really quite unpredictable and had very poor wet weather grip. But I survived and replaced them when I had worn them out, which only took 4000 miles. I then fitted MPSS to the car and the improvement in wet conditions was night and day, they had more grip in 2-3c wet conditions compared to the Pzero when temperatures were beyond 20c.

Even in the dry MPSS was better, something else, I got 15,000 miles from the rears, lasted 3x longer and cost roughly the same.

MPSS has now being replaced by the even better PS4S, but yes in my experience, Michelin make far better tyres and based from what I found fitting MPSS or PS4s will give a night and day improvement over the Pzero, particular in wet conditions.

So are we ok to have non J rated tyres whilst under warranty

Would much prefer to try the Michelin’s, even if only the Pilot sports I had on the M3 (which were great)

I cannot see any instance where tyre fitment could affect the warranty, provided they are the correct size and speed rating XL (extra load) version.
