Lying Saleman, the sidebar....

I have the Lying Salesman post already here, but thought about the other things that were said to me when I was out and about looking and testing F-Types the other week.
Now I want to say, I am not 100% sure if these are all BS, but by godfather they sounded BS when some where quoted at the time..

1. The Gear Shift on the F-Type was modelled after the Joystick in a Eurofighter after the design crew was taken up in one for a thank you from Jaguar. (Lancasters, Tonbridge)
2. The Bonnet is the largest single piece of aluminium on any car in the world. (Lancasters, Tonbridge)
3. I would have to take out any extended warranty when I bought the car there and then, not anytime before the year runs out which is what I have been told subsequently. (Lancasters, Tonbridge)
4. 'Why don't you want to pay the difference with finance'? (Mashalls, Oxford)
5. 'Are you sure you don't want the GAP insurance'? 'This car is £37,000, do you want to lose that, as insurance companies never pay out the full amount'....(Marshalls, Oxford)
6. 'Look, don't leave this to long deciding as everyday as your car is worth less and less every week' (90% of salespersons)
7. 'We price our cars to sell, so there is absolutely no reduction on the sticker price' ( I was told the exact same BS at Audi, BMW, Lexus and Porsche)

Listen to us Jaguar before it's finally too late and you go the way of Rover, we are your customers and most of us really care, yes we all whinge and exaggerate a little, but the underlying thing is, there isn't a forum for people complaining and being ripped off for buying milk, butter or petrol etc..Still after 100 years plus of car sales, we are still experiencing this utter crap from you people.

I was originally looking for a secondhand F Type but after being unable to find what I wanted I eventually decided to buy new - with an added delay to raise funds of course. In the last 3 years I’ve spoken to several jag dealers and test driven several cars. I have had the odd “we just had someone offer £200 less than sticker price and I said no, so there’s no scope for a reduced price!” (I just walked away at that point even though we were just going to the car in question at the time).

However, those sort of comments were rare and the vast majority of jag salesman I’ve spoken to have been refreshingly honest and easy to deal with. Including “I can offer you a quote for gap insurance but you can get a better price elsewhere “. The salesman I eventually ordered the car through has been very patient to my requests for change to the spec, never pushy and given genuinely helpful advice and a great discount.

I think it is useful to highlight problems so others can avoid them but we should also be highlighting good service whenever it is given to help forum users.

I do hope that Jaguar sort out your car and you get to enjoy it as you should.

Beadles of Sidcup have been exemplary, can't fault them for what they have, and currently are, doing for me.
Maybe as I look and sound like your typical London commoner, they finks Iz Fick en it (which tbh I am) ;) :D

Re. Item 2, I understand that at the time it was the most complex single piece double pressing in the world.
Not sure if that’s why some of the bonnet to wing alignment is so poor...

Mind you a sometimes total lack of common sense and professionalism doesn’t help - when my dealer had to remove the bonnet to replace the Y coolant pipe under the supercharger they didn’t even manage to line up the washer marks when re-fitting.
Bonnet leading edge caught on passenger door every time you got in - they had to send it to a quality independent to fill / spray the damage. Thankfully the indi did a superb job on all counts and I’ve returned there to have the peppered nose cone re-sprayed too - perfect match of the special colour Lunar Grey metallic, so another win for the indies and a well deserved shout out to Premier Panels in Farnham. Check out their web site - the workshop manager gave me a tour - Tesla powered 911 anyone? - they had a car in shipped over from Dubai for some work.

Been browsing the forum as I picked up my F Type last Sunday and I got the same sales pitch lines from tonbridge as you did! They must get bored of repeating themselves

I chuckled when I saw that must be a pitch or the same salesman we spoke to!

Sort of brushed it off as a pitch to sell the car didn’t believe it as true... these guys want to create a customer story to sell the cars I guess it is what it is

Seems all pretty much standard sales patter to me.
Words to get or keep you interested. Of course they want to sell you finance, gap, extended warranty. The more options they sell the more money their earn.

If you want gap use ALA via this forum.
If you want extended warranty then you can buy at any point upto 3yrs old or any other company at any time (I'm going to use ALA).

As with every such interaction it is the person you are dealing with that makes the difference.
My buying experience was exemplary - the salesperson found “my” car, got all sorted including a mop and new tyres when above the change limit, at a really good price and matched the best trade in quote I’d got on my XE. Explained they had to go through all the insurance options, but no pressure.
She went to Lexus so I spent some time considering an LC 500 but can’t shake the convertible + exhaust sound bug.
Same with the service guy - worked really hard for me, including no cost replacement £15k engine at 72k miles.
He’s just left too - but for Mini so I won’t be going there!
About to make use of my free 96k £762 service (as compensation for the troubles I’ve had) including plugs - re-used in new engine, it’s a warranty cost thing! - then likely to go indie.

It's like life, a few bad ones ruin it for the rest.

Interesting to hear how you find ALAs warranty as I am considering this myself.
I have their GAP insurance which was very competitive and given they are sponsors on many forums I would hope their reputation is important.
.

Wonder if it is the same person at Lancaster, Tonbridge, that is saying the same things but when I purchased from them in November I couldn't fault the sales chap. He knew that I had one before (That I had purchased from them) so maybe saved me the sales 'spiel'.

Had the same experience at both Porsche and Mercedes at the weekend when looking to replace the wife's car, they simply couldn't understand that I didn't want to finance a car but wanted to buy one outright, their loss!
