Jag on the prowl

Last week I fullfilled a long-time wish of mine and finally travelled to Austria, northern Italy, Swiss and Liechtenstein. Wanted to travel to Southern Tyrol for almost 10 years - what better occasion than with a new car!

We travelled 8 days total and covered ~2800km, average fuel consumption 13 Liters / 100km :) Stops were:
Berlin - Lake Achensee - Salzburg - Cortina d'Ampezzo - Meran/Scena - Colico - Schruns - Berlin.

Planned with some great roads along the way:
Achenpass - Gerlos Alpine Road - Grossglockner High Alpine Road - Falzarego Pass, Pordoi Pass, Sella Pass, Gardena Pass - Stelvio Pass (skipped for driving the whole eastern coast of Lake Garda) - Splügen Pass.

It was the first grand tour with my F-Type. Loved it. Especially with Android Auto installed - with the original navigation system it would have been stressful. In the passes, I finally understood the need for the active exhaust - while in Berlin and surroundings it's loud all of the time, on this trip I often closed the exhaust valves to calm the car down a bit. Even then, with the inclinations, the Jag isn't a quiet car. :D

Had some great fun, still didn't touch the DSC button - the car is really playful and I enjoy the safety net of the DSC. The V8 is way too fast for most of the roads, but the sound and brutality of the engine is really rewarding. What also surprised me: The fuel consumption on the autobahn. I limited myself to ~130...150km/h for so many years, because my Volvo C30 T5s were really punishing on fuel consumption >130km/h. With the Jag I drove 180-200km/h when it was possible to do so safely, and fuel consumption on both autobahn trips was 10.5 -11.0 Liters / 100km - which is actually way lower than my average. With my C30, this would have been 13+ Liters/100km. I really like the ZF 8-Speed; while not perfect, driving 180km/h with approx. 2800rpm is awesome.

Awesome! This is what these cars were built for. I've done loads of Alpine road trips with mine over the years and it never disappoints.

Just did Austria last month too, including Grossglockner, Gerlos and some other goodies. I've covered quite a few passes and mountain roads but have to say that the Grossglocker road is among the most impressive ones. Especially if you go there at 5:30 when the road opens on an off season weekday morning and have the whole mountain for yourself for the first hour or two. :)

The F-Type is just such a treat on the Autobahn.

We went to the North Sea this weekend, ~500km from Berlin. The way back home on sunday was so relaxed - no trucks on the Autobahn, and even in the middle lane everyone was cruising at ~170kph. I was on cruise control at 200kph half of the time. That's by the way the max speed with active cruise control - my C30 T5 could do 210kph with CC enabled :P

I believe the V8 sits at around 2600rpm at this speed? After a short lift, I accelerated to ~260 briefly on a fully empty stretch, lifted, and then thought "why not". It went past 300 to ~305kph and I believe that wasn't the end of it. But as I already got my trophy picture, I called it a day and continued with 200kph. Over the last fuel stop I still averaged ~13.5 Liters at 145kph average speed. I honestly can't comprehend how this car guzzles ~14-15 liters on my normal trips while dropping to a very reasonable consumption on the Autobahn. The ZF-8HP may not be perfect, but this gearbox is just so great for long-distance cruising.

Wow, the only time I've seen my speedo that far right is when switching the ignition on!

Really hoping I'll be able to take my F-Type on track this year and stretch its legs out a bit.
